Faculty Present Research in Ireland

Waters College of Health Professions faculty Janet Buelow, Ph.D. and Paula Tillman, DNP, RN presented research in January at the second annual European Conference of Health Education and Research Conference in Dublin, Ireland.
Buelow and Tillman presented a regional case study on interprofessional education titled “Empower Savannah-Serving the Poor within an Interprofessional Health Professions Course.” The research was co-authored by Georgia Southern professors McKinley Thomas, Ed.D., and Helen Taggart, Ph.D.
The presentation focused on data the faculty collected from 80 students who participated in the Operation Empower Health - Greater Savannah event held on the Armstrong Campus in May 2018. During the event, troops from every branch of the military provided medical, dental, vision and veterinary services, totaling more than $4.5 million, for more than 9,000 people and 3,000 animals at no cost. Faculty collected both qualitative and quantitative data on a student’s attitude toward poverty.
The European Conference of Health Education and Research Conference promotes interdisciplinary cooperation and critical understanding of the latest research in the field of health workforce education, training and development. To present at the conference, faculty had to submit their research topics and be selected.

Alumna Named American Association of
Nurse Practitioners State Award for Excellence
School of Nursing alumna Zakiyyah Weatherspoon ('05, ‘11), has been named the recipient of the 2019 American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Georgia State Award for Excellence. The award is given annually by AANP to recognize outstanding achievements by nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner advocates in each state. Weatherspoon is being recognized for her community service involvement in her local community.
In addition to receiving both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Georgia Southern University, Weatherspoon, a native from Valdosta, Georgia, is also pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a psychiatric mental health cognate from Georgia Southern.
Weatherspoon will be recognized during the AANP National Conference in June which will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event is by invitation only and attendees will include award winners, the state representative, regional directors and the board of directors of AANP. |
Bringman Selected as Chancellor's Learning Scholar
 Rehabilitation Sciences Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor David Bringman, PT, DPT, was one of three faculty selected from Georgia Southern University to participate in the inaugural cohort of the Chancellor’s Learning Scholars program initiated by the University System of Georgia (USG).
As a Chancellor’s Learning Scholar (CLS), Bringman will lead a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) this spring where ideas regarding teaching and learning will be shared. The two-year program aims to provide additional faculty development opportunities across the state.
In addition to participating in the program, Bringman will receive a USG Certificate of Teaching Excellence and other recognition. To be considered for the program, faculty had to submit an application of interest and demonstrate an expertise and passion for working with colleagues to enrich courses and deepen student learning. |
RN to BSN Program Ranked One of
the Most Affordable Programs
Georgia Southern University’s School of Nursing RN to BSN program was recently named one of the most affordable programs for 2019 by GreatValueColleges.net. The University’s RN to BSN program was ranked 27th out of 50 for Most Affordable Online RN to BSN Programs.
“We are pleased to be recognized by Great Value Colleges as one of the Top 50 Most Affordable Online RN to BSN Programs for 2019,” stated Sheri Carey, DNP, APRN, PCNS-BS, assistant professor and RN to BSN program director. “This recognition attests to the affordability and outstanding reputation of our program and ongoing faculty excellence.”
Great Value Colleges recognized Georgia Southern’s RN to BSN program as having an unerring commitment to providing non-traditional students a high-quality education at an affordable price. “We strive to give students all the tools they need to achieve their full potential and meet future academic and career goals.”
Data collected from College Navigator regarding tuition, as well as information obtained from the program’s website, was used. Though the methodology used to determine a program’s ranking primarily focused on tuition, items such as program flexibility, customization within the degree program and unique offerings were also examined.
The School of Nursing is housed in the Waters College of Health Professions and is fully accredited by the Georgia Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Join us for "Help, I'm a Caregiver!" with Dr. TimMarie Williams for the continuing 2018-2019 Robert I. Strozier Faculty Lecture Series.
This talk explores the psychological ramifications of care giving and offers some practical solutions for caregivers to reduce the strain. Faculty, staff, students and community members are welcome.
