Action Alert:
Tell NID to Stop Spending on Centennial

Two weeks ago, NID chose to not purchase a property in the inundation zone of the proposed Centennial Dam project. SYRCL applauds NID for "tabling" the issue, it was a positive step forward for our community in transparency and fiscal responsibility.

Now, NID is revisiting this property purchase again and adding a "future lakefront" residential property to the list at this week's Board meeting in closed session. This means NID is proposing to spend over half a million dollars on Centennial properties, despite consistent requests to temporarily cease spending while focusing on the update to the Raw Water Master Plan (RWMP or Plan for Water).

These property purchases are being considered at the same time as the comment and public review period for a dramatic water rates hike.

Additionally, the warrants from January revealed that NID had spent another $24,000 on the Draft Environmental Impact Report for Centennial. When asked about the expense by Board Directors at the February 12th Board meeting, NID staff did not know what specific task the $24,000 was spent on

Unfortunately, all these actions continue to reinforce concerns about fiscal responsibility, transparency and accountability to the water customers in our community.

Once again, we ask NID to stop spending on Centennial, especially in light of the proposed water rates increase and the important Plan for Water process. We want to trust the outcomes of the Plan for Water process but are concerned that NID continues to spend on the fiscally irresponsible and environmentally destructive Centennial project simultaneously.

Join us tomorrow morning to tell NID to stop spending on Centennial and put our community first.
