Spring Has Sprung!

As you have guessed, everyone is very busy already. The Spring Equinox has passed and the days have been warm and dry for the most part. March was the second driest month in 54 years.

We hope this issue will help you think about some things to do in the coming months before Summer Solstice in June.

Spring Reminders

Here are a few tips to help maximize your forage production:

  • Remember the 3" Golden Rule! If your animals have grazed the pasture down to about 3 inches, rotate them to the next field. The bottom 3" of the plant is the “energy bank”, which grass needs to recover from grazing.
  • Mow! After you move your livestock to the next pasture, mow the current field to prevent weeds from taking over. (Prevent weeds from flowering).
  • Harrowing Pasture in EnumclawThink about harrowing/dragging pastures after mowing. This will distribute the nutrients in manure equally through your fields.

Don’t have a way to rotate your animals? Consider cross-fencing. Installing interior fencing (permanent or temporary) to segment a pasture is the key to developing a rotational grazing system.

Landowner Incentive Program Updates

KCD’s Landowner Incentive Program (LIP) can help assist with the cost of installing cross-fencing in pastures.

Cross fencing is now part of a suite of best management practices in KCD’s new Pasture Health Management Cost Share Program. Contact KCD’s Farm Services team to learn more. The reimbursement rate has recently been updated to 50% of $6.00 a foot. This will not be applied retroactively to open or closed fencing contracts.

Contact your KCD Farm Services Resource Planner if you are interested in this program and would like to learn more.

KCD recently partnered with Pierce Conservation District to broadcast and record a Cover Crop Round Table and a Grazing Workshop.
