CHUMASH

Parshas Emor - Sheini with Rashi

Today, Hashem tells Moshe more mitzvos that are just for Kohanim:

Any kohen who has a mum is not allowed to act as a kohen and bring korbanos in the Beis Hamikdash. What is a mum? Someone who has something wrong with his body, like someone who can’t see or can’t walk.

If he gets better from his problem, he can work in the Beis Hamikdash again.

This means that when Moshiach comes, ALL of the kohanim will be able to work in the Beis Hamikdash, because Hashem will give EVERYONE a Refuah Sheleima!

There are certain parts of korbanos that only a Kohen is allowed to eat. These pieces of korbanos can even be eaten from a kohen who has a mum.

If a kohen is tomei, he needs to be very careful not to touch any korbanos until he becomes tahor again.

What if a kohen has people working for him? Can they eat from the kohen’s food? No, they can’t. Only a kohen, a Kohen’s children, and a slave that he buys, are allowed to eat from these korbanos.

If a kohen has a daughter, and she marries someone who isn’t a kohen, she can’t eat from the holy food. (If she isn’t married anymore, and comes back to live with her parents, she can eat it again.)

What happens if someone eats from the holy food by mistake? He needs to pay back the kohen, plus a chomesh (1/5) extra.

TEHILLIM

44 - 48

In today’s Tehillim, there is a very special posuk: “Kol Kvuda Bas Melech Penima” — “The kavod of a princess is inside.” This means that a woman, because of tznius, shows her kavod inside her house, not outside in front of everyone.

(Hashem set up the world in a way that usually the man goes out into the world and gets parnasa, and the woman is the Akeres Habayis — making the home a place where Hashem can feel comfortable.)

But in the Navi, it says that when Moshiach comes, the women will be outside too, and even showing their kavod outside!

Since now we are so close to Moshiach, we need to start acting in a way of Geulah. So today, women and girls need to go outside too, go to Cheder, and do mivtzoyim. But since Moshiach didn’t come yet and we still have a Yetzer Hara, we have to be EXTRA careful to make sure that it is done with proper tznius!

TANYA

Likutei Amarim Perek Mem-Vov

We are learning now how a Yid can come to love Hashem by thinking about the love that Hashem has for us! Hashem took us out of Mitzrayim, and brought us close to Him by giving us the Torah and the mitzvos.

Before we do a mitzvah, we say a bracha, “Asher Kidishanu Bemitzvosav.” This bracha means that Hashem makes us kadosh, holy, through His mitzvos. What is kedusha?

Kedusha means holiness, but also means “separate.” Even though Hashem creates the world all the time and His chayus fills the world, there is a special chayus of Hashem which is separate from the world. When we do a mitzvah, we become connected to this special chayus of Hashem!

This helps us understand the halacha that when a Yid is bringing his Bikurim to Yerushalayim, other people who see him need to stand up for him! Why? Because when a Yid is doing a mitzvah, he is close to this special kedusha of Hashem. We stand up to show kavod for that!

Even though a person might not be aidel enough to feel it, it still is there.

When we think about how Hashem makes us so close to Him when we do a mitzvah, we will love Hashem and want to do His mitzvos!

HAYOM YOM

Ches Iyar

Today is twenty-three days of the Omer!

When one person sends another person to do something for him, that’s called sending a shliach. When the shliach does what he is supposed to do, it’s like he is a part of the person who sent him! That’s why a malach is sometimes called with Hashem’s name, because the malach is doing what Hashem sent it to do!

Every chossid is a shliach of the Rebbe, with a job to do what the Rebbe wants. He has a koach of the Rebbe inside of him, to do his job the right way. But that koach is hiding! If the chossid works hard to do what the Rebbe wants him to do, then he can feel that koach in EVERYTHING he does!

That’s why we can point to a chossid and say — “Es geit a chossid, est a chossid, shloft a chossid” — “Look! There’s a chossid walking, a chossid eating, a chossid sleeping!” Even though he is doing the same things everybody does, because the koach of the Rebbe is shining in him, you can tell he’s a chossid in everything he does!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #330 - Mitzvas Lo Saasei #318, #319, Asei #210, #211

Today’s mitzvos are all about Kibbud Av Va’em. They are:

1) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #318) We are not ever allowed to curse our parents.

The details of this mitzvah are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

2) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #319) We are not allowed to hit our parents.

The details of this mitzvah are explained in the end of Mesechta Sanhedrin.

There is no specific posuk that teaches us these two mitzvos, but since the Torah tells us a specific punishment for these things, we know it must be a separate mitzvah.

3) (Mitzvas Asei #210) We need to do Kibbud Av Va’em, to treat our parents with honor. We bring them food, make sure they have clothes, and help them with what they need.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Yisro: כַּבֵּד אֶת אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ

The details are explained in many places in Gemara, especially Mesechta Kiddushin.

4) (Mitzvas Asei #211) We need to have yirah for our parents like we would have for a king — that we should be afraid to do something against them. For example, we don’t sit in their place, and we don’t argue with what they say. (We don’t have to BE afraid of them, but we have to treat them the way we would treat someone we are afraid of.)

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: אִישׁ אִמּוֹ וְאָבִיו תִּירָאוּ

The details are explained in Mesechta Kiddushin.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Mamrim

Perek Daled: The Rambam tells us more about the Zakein Mamrei, a Talmid Chochom who argues with the Beis Din. He is not punished for just anything that he disagrees about, only about a serious aveira or something that could lead to a serious aveira.

Perek Hey: Now we start to learn about the two Mitzvas Lo Saasei about Kibud Av Va’eim. We learn about not cursing and not hurting our parents. One halacha that we learn is that if the son is a doctor, and the father needs something done that will make him bleed, the son should try to find a different doctor to do it, and if there is no one else, he should ask permission first.

In Perek Vov we learn about the halachos of Kibud Av Va’em. One of the things that we learn is that we always have to listen to our mothers and fathers — but not if they tell us to do an aveira Chas Veshalom!

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Shaar Avos HaTumos - Perek Chof

We learned that the halachos about a sofek in Tumah are different depending on whether it was in a Reshus Hayochid or a Reshus Horabim.

Today we learn when a place is called a Reshus Hayochid or a Reshus Horabim. It’s usually the same as the rules we learned in Hilchos Shabbos, but there are some differences! For example, even if a place is inside or surrounded by walls, if it is open for anyone to come in, it might be counted as a Reshus Horabim.

INYANA D'YOMA

Sefiras Haomer

During Sefiras Haomer, we say a special Tefillah after counting the Omer. We ask Hashem to help us fix up one of our middos and to bring much bracha to the world.

In many maamarim in Chassidus, we learn about what makes a midah into a good midah: A good midah comes from Bittul — doing something that Hashem wants us to do, the way the Torah teaches. A “bad midah” comes from Yeshus — doing things only to make ourselves happy, without thinking about what Hashem wants.

We get used to acting in certain ways, and that makes those middos very strong.

During Sefiras Haomer, we try to think about each of our Middos: Are we using these middos for the Ratzon of Hashem, or just to get the things we want? For example, a person might say please and thank you because this is a mentchliche way for a Yid to act and it makes a Kiddush Hashem, or he might do it because he wants people to give him presents!

This week we are working on the midah of Netzach, which is doing what Hashem wants even when we’re not feeling in the mood.

TEFILLAH

Bechol

The words of the posuk Bechol tell us that we should imagine that we were taken out of Golus at the time of Yetziyas Mitzrayim.

This posuk is especially important for us nowadays!

At the end of the Golus, things can feel scary and sad. We don’t always understand what is happening.

We might worry, how can Moshiach fix all of this? We might be nervous, what will Geulah even be like? We might wish we knew, when will Moshiach ever come?

When we say the posuk Bechol Dor Vador, we see that we have nothing to worry about!

Bechol Dor Vador — In every generation

Chayav Adam Liros Es Atzmo — We need to imagine ourselves

K’ilu Hu Yatza Mimitzrayim — As if we went out of Mitzrayim!

Hashem came down to the Yidden in Mitzrayim, made them not slaves anymore, and got them ready to leave the Golus. When we think about that, we will know that Hashem will also do that again!

Hashem will take away the problems of Golus, and help us be ready for Moshiach to come! What Hashem will do for us will be even GREATER than Yetziyas Mitzrayim, taking us out of Golus and bringing us to the complete and final Geulah!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Exceptions to Muktza

Muktza means something that is not meant to be used on Shabbos.

We wouldn’t want to use something smelly and yucky on Shabbos, so smelly and yucky things are muktza. They are called Muktza Machmas Mius.

But since having those kinds of things around can bother us on Shabbos, the Chachomim made “Heter Graf Shel Re’i,” that we can move something yucky on Shabbos if it’s around where people are, so it won’t bother them.

For example, if you have a smelly garbage can, or find a dirty diaper or a dead bug on Shabbos, you can take them out, even in the regular way.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

The Truth of Torah

The Navi Yeshaya told his generation many nevuos about Moshiach! When Moshiach comes, the goyim will see that the truth is in Torah. In fact, the goyim will want to come learn the ways of Hashem! They will tell the Yidden:

בֵּית יַעֲקֹב לְכוּ וְנֵלְכָה בְּאוֹר ה׳

Beis Yaakov — Yidden, the family of Yaakov

Lechu Venelcha — Come, let us go

Be’or Hashem — In the light of Hashem!

Let us follow the path of Hashem’s Torah!

Someone wrote a letter to the Rebbe in which he asked questions about the contradictions between science and Torah. The Rebbe answered that he is always surprised that people who learned some science assume that it is the absolute truth, and that the Torah can therefore not be true. In fact, the OPPOSITE is true! The Torah is the absolute truth! The “proofs” from science are just theories and keep changing, but we have REAL proof for the Torah.

So why don’t people do Torah and mitzvos now? Now the goyim laugh at us keeping Torah and mitzvos, and we don’t see the reward right away. That makes it easier for the Yetzer Hara to get us to do the wrong thing. But when Moshiach comes, everybody will see the truth of Torah, and there will be no Yetzer Hara to push us away from doing what Hashem wants us to!
