At the end of last week’s parsha, we learned about the presents that the Nesiim gave for the Chanukas Hamizbeiach. But one shevet did not bring a present — Shevet Levi. Aharon felt bad about this, but Hashem told him that he would do something greater — he would light the Menorah! That’s why we learn about how the Menorah is lit now: Hashem tells Moshe to tell Aharon how to light the Menorah. When Aharon sets up the wicks in the Menorah, he should make sure that the wicks face the middle branch of the Menorah. Also, when he lights the wicks, he should make sure that the flame catches onto the wick until it is burning on its own. Even though Aharon was so overjoyed to be able to do this mitzvah, he still made sure to do it exactly the way he was told. In order to show how special it was for Aharon to light the menorah, the Torah tells us again how special the menorah was. It was made out of one piece of gold, and made in a way of a neis! This shows us that what Aharon did to prepare the Menorah was greater than what the Nesiim did to prepare the Mizbeiach! Now we learn how the Leviim started working in the Mishkan: Hashem told Moshe to make the Leviim tahor, by sprinkling them with water from the Parah Adumah, in case any of the Leviim had Tumas Meis. They also had to cut off all their hair like a Metzora (a person with tzoraas), and put their clothes in the Mikvah. Why did they have to have their hair cut off like a Metzora? Rashi explains that this was because the Leviim were going to do the Avodah in the Mishkan instead of the Bechorim, the firstborns, who served Avodah Zarah with the Eigel Hazahav. An offering to Avodah Zara and a Metzora are both also called “Meis.” The Leviim had to cut off their hair to take away the tumah of Avodah Zara (Meis), the way a Metzora has to cut off his hair to take away his tumah of tzoraas (Meis). The Leviim should also bring a Korban Olah similar to the korban which a group of people who do Avodah Zarah have to bring, and a Korban Chatas. All of the Leviim should stand in front of the Mishkan, and the Yidden should watch them bringing their korbanos. Aharon lifted up the Leviim and waved them like the korban of a Metzora is waved, and the Yidden did semicha (leaning on them, like we lean on a korban) on the Leviim, since the Avodah of the Leviim is a korban which is a kapara for the Yidden. When the Leviim bring these Korbanos, they will become special for Hashem, ready to work in the Mishkan. |

In one of today’s kapitelach (Ayin-Alef) there are four niggunim! It was the Rebbe’s 70th birthday kapitel and chassidim were so happy that they made many niggunim! One of them is on the words “Kemofes Hayisi LoRabim, VeAta Machsi Oz.” Dovid Hamelech says, “I was an example to many people, and You give me strength!” When a Yid acts in a way that will be a Dugma Chaya for other people, Hashem gives him special hatzlacha in everything he does! |

The Alter Rebbe is starting to explain to us that even though all of the Gashmius things in the world are botul to the chayus of Hashem, we can’t see it! Hashem hides so much that even though Hashem is RIGHT HERE we still aren’t able to see Hashem’s chayus. Hashem has two special names: 1) Yud-Kay-Vov-Kay Yud-Kay-Vov-Kay has the same letters as Havayah, which means “to make things be.” Hashem is called by this name when He makes everything in the world, “Yeish MeAyin.” And like we said before, Hashem is doing this all the time! Nowadays Hashem is hiding, using the name Elokim. When Moshiach comes, there won’t be any more hiding, and we’ll be able to SEE how Hashem is making everything in the world become alive with the name Yud-Kay-Vov-Kay! |

The Tzemach Tzedek would make many niggunim! He used to sing while he would learn Torah, and sometimes would stop learning or writing to sing a niggun. The Rebbe Maharash said that the Tzemach Tzedek’s niggunim were connected to what he was learning — he could tell what the Tzemach Tzedek was learning by what niggun he sang. |

In Sefer Hamitzvos, we learn the same mitzvah again, since we’re busy learning SO MANY halachos about it in Rambam! The mitzvah is Mitzvas Asei #5, that we serve Hashem by davening to Him. We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֵת ה׳ אֱלֹקֵיכֶם |

Perek Yud-Alef: In this perek, we learn about a shul! In a place where there are 10 Yidden, we need to make sure there is a shul. A shul has to be treated with kavod, and we have to keep it clean — sweeping and mopping the floors! Perek Yud-Beis: Now we learn halachos about Kriyas HaTorah! Moshe Rabbeinu taught us to lein from the Torah on Mondays, Thursdays, and Shabbos, so that there are never 3 days in a row without hearing the holy words of the Torah. Perek Yud-Gimmel: In this perek, the Rambam teaches us the halachos about leining the parshios each week, so we finish the whole Torah every year. Did you know that some people had a minhag to read shorter parts of the Torah, and only finish it every three years? The Rambam writes that finishing the Chumash in three years isn’t the minhag haposhut. Based on this Rambam, the Rebbe taught two ways to learn the daily Shiur of Rambam: To finish it in one year, or to finish it in three years. The Rebbe said that just like we finish Torah Shebichsav (the Chumash) in one year, the minhag haposhut should be also to finish Torah Shebaal Peh (the halachos of Rambam) in one year. |

In this perek we learn that a clay keili is only tomei if it is a Klei Kibul — it has a place to hold things inside. |

Today is the first day after the Yemei Tashlumin to bring Korbanos for Shavuos. That means that the whole Yom Tov of Shavuos is over. The Rebbe explains to us that there is something very special about this day! Why? A Yid has an achrayus to always add more in kedusha — Maalin Bakodesh! How can we add MORE in kedusha when we just finished such a special Yom Tov? The answer is that the main point of Torah is to USE it to live the way Hashem wants. We learn a lot of Torah, and we learn from it how we should act. The lesson of the day after Shavuos is to take all of the Torah we learned and got, and make it part of how we live! The chayus of Shavuos and the days afterwards made us want to make hachlatos in learning and teaching Torah. Now is our chance to start keeping these hachlatos, even on a regular weekday! That is true Maalin Bakodesh, and that’s what’s special about Yud-Gimmel Sivan! |

We are reviewing the Yud-Beis Pesukim, in the order of where they come from. We started with the first two pesukim of Torah Shebichsav, the pesukim of Torah Tziva and Shema. The Chachomim say that these pesukim should be the first thing we teach a child, as soon as they learn to talk! In our time, the Rebbe strengthened this hora’ah of the Chachomim, by putting them first into the Yud-Beis Pesukim that every child should know. A few weeks after teaching the first six pesukim of the Yud-Beis Pesukim, the Rebbe taught us more! The Rebbe started by adding two more pesukim from Torah Shebichsav, the pesukim of Bereishis and Veshinantam. Today we will review the posuk of Bereishis, and see how the first posuk the Rebbe taught this time is a continuation of the very first posuk the Rebbe taught before! Bereishis Bara Elokim — “In the beginning, Hashem created the Heavens and the earth.” This is the very first thing that the Torah tells us! We shouldn’t be afraid if it looks like the world doesn’t seem like such a holy place. We should remember that Hashem created this world! Hashem gave us the Torah, which lets us change this world into a beautiful holy world, the way it is supposed to be. Once we know what it says in the posuk Torah Tziva, that the Torah is a precious treasure that each Yid has, we get to start USING our treasure, by learning as much as we can! We start from the very first posuk of the entire Torah, Bereishis! There, we also see another special thing about our precious Torah: That the Torah helps us fix the world into the way Hashem wants it to be! |

The best way to daven Shemoneh Esrei is to say the words quietly, but in a way that you can hear it by yourself. Still, if someone said the words of Shemoneh Esrei so quietly that only his lips were moving, and he couldn’t hear the words, he is still yotzei. But if someone just THOUGHT the words without saying them at all, it is not counted as davening. In Tanya, the Alter Rebbe explains why saying words is so important: The reason the neshama came into the world was not to make itself holy, but to make the body and the world holy, by using them for kedusha. Thinking does use the body, but not in a way that we can see. To do most mitzvos, we are supposed to actually say words or do things, which use Gashmius in a way that can easily be seen. That’s why even with the mitzvah of davening, where the main thing is kavana, it is very important to actually SAY the words using at least our lips. This way the neshama is able to use the guf for kedusha, which is the reason it came down into a guf. See the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman Kuf-Alef and Tanya Perek Lamed-Ches |

We just learned at the end of last week’s parsha (Parshas Naso) that the Leviim carried the kelim of the Mishkan in the Midbar. The Navi Yeshaya says that when Moshiach comes, they will have Techiyas Hameisim, and will need to make themselves tahor to do their avodah! This is what will be said to the Leviim at that time: סוּרוּ סוּרוּ צְאוּ מִשָּׁם טָמֵא אַל תִּגָּעוּ צְאוּ מִתּוֹכָהּ הִבָּרוּ נֹשְׂאֵי כְּלֵי ה׳ Suru Suru — Turn away, turn away! Tze’u Misham — As you go away from there, Tamei Al Tiga’u — Don’t touch anything tamei. Tze’u Mitocha — When you go out of the Golus, Hibaru Nosei Klei Hashem — Make yourself tahor, Kohanim and Leviim who carried Hashem’s keilim in the Midbar! The Kohanim and Leviim will have to become tahor, because they will need to do the Avodah in the Beis Hamikdash Hashlishi! See Yeshaya perek Nun-Beis posuk Yud-Alef and Pirush Rashi |
