CHUMASH

Parshas Pinchas - Shvi'i with Rashi

In today’s Chumash, Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu to remind the Yidden about the korbanos of Sukkos and Shemini Atzeres.

SUKKOS: There are many korbanos on Sukkos! We bring 2 rams, 13 lambs, and a goat every day, but a different number of bulls. (Can you figure out the pattern?)

Day #1: Bring 13 bulls, 2 rams, and 13 lambs, AND a goat for a Chatas
Day #2: Bring 12 bulls, 2 rams, and 13 lambs AND a goat for a Chatas
Day #3: Bring 11 bulls, 2 rams, and 13 lambs AND a goat for a Chatas
Day #4: Bring 10 bulls, 2 rams, and 13 lambs AND a goat for a Chatas
Day #5: Bring 9 bulls, 2 rams, and 13 lambs AND a goat for a Chatas
Day #6: Bring 8 bulls, 2 rams, and 13 lambs AND a goat for a Chatas
Day #7: Bring 7 bulls, 2 rams, and 13 lambs AND a goat for a Chatas

SHMINI ATZERES: (like the Korbanos of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur) 1 bull, 1 ram, and 7 lambs AND a goat for a Chatas.

Each animal brought for a Korban Olah also needs a Mincha with fine flour (soles) and oil, and a Nesech (wine).

For each lamb (Keves) : 1/10 eifah of flour mixed with 1/4 hin of oil, and 1/4 hin of wine
For each ram (Ayil): 2/10 eifah of flour mixed with 1/3 hin of oil, and 1/3 hin of wine
For each bull (Par): 3/10 eifah of flour mixed with 1/2 hin of oil, and 1/2 hin of wine

Rashi explains that the numbers of Korbanos we bring on Sukkos remind us of different things in our history!

Moshe reminded the Yidden about all of these Korbanos, just like Hashem told him to.

TEHILLIM

113 - 118

The kapitelach in today’s Tehillim are the ones used in Hallel! We also have the Rebbe and Rebbetzin’s kapitelach!

One of the pesukim is “Rom Al Kol Goyim Hashem,” which means that “Hashem is higher than the nations.”

Chassidus explains that the posuk also tells us what the Goyim say: They think that Hashem is high, but that Hashem is too great to deal with the world after creating it. They think Hashem leaves it to the forces of nature to make the world keep running.

Of course, Yidden know that Hashem didn’t just create the world, but Hashem creates the world every second and takes care of every single little thing with Hashgacha Protis.

TANYA

Igeres Hateshuvah Perek Vov

We said that when a Yid does an aveira chas veshalom, he can get Tumah Chayus. Today we will see that not only CAN he get that kind of chayus, but he gets A LOT!

Why?

When a Yid does an aveira, the Hey of Hashem’s name gets separated from the other letters, like we learned before.

Where does it go to? To the koach of tumah!

Who made it go there? The person who did the aveira, chas veshalom. The koach of tumah is VERY happy to get the chayus — so happy, that it gives a lot of chayus to the person who did the aveira! Of course this is not good chayus, but it does make it possible to live a tumah life for a long time.

(Since he is alive, he has more chances to do teshuvah, and Hashem certainly helps every Yid to do teshuvah!)

When a Yid does Teshuvah, then the Hey comes out of its Golus in the tumah, and goes back to being part of Hashem’s name!

Now we understand what Teshuvah is all about: It’s bringing the Hey out of the koach of Tumah, where a Yid puts it when he does an aveira. His Teshuvah brings the Hey back to where it should be! Now, instead of the person getting his chayus from tumah, he is again able to receive his chayus from kedusha.

There is a level of chossid called a Pnimi. Here the Rebbe shares a quote from the Tzemach Tzedek about how a Pnimi acts:

A Pnimi doesn’t ask for brachos to make his avodah easier. He doesn’t want any shortcuts! He is ready to do Avodah, and is ready that it should be hard!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #66 - Mitzvas Asei #153, #59

Today in Sefer Hamitzvos, we learn the same mitzvah (Mitzvas Asei #153) for the last time: How the Beis Din needs to make a calendar and calculate the months and the years. This is the mitzvah of Kiddush Hachodesh.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Bo: הַחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה לָכֶם רֹאשׁ חֳדָשִׁים

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Alef, Mesechta Rosh Hashana and Brachos.

Today we also learn a new mitzvah, (Mitzvas Asei #59) to blow trumpets at certain times. We blow them when we bring the special korbanos of Yom Tov, a happy time. We also blow them in a sad time — when we are davening to Hashem because hard things are happening. They can remind us that it’s from Hashem, and we have to do teshuvah.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Behaalosecha: וּבְיוֹם שִׂמְחַתְכֶם וּבְמוֹעֲדֵיכֶם וּבְרָאשֵׁי חָדְשֵׁיכֶם וּתְקַעְתֶּם בַּחֲצֹצְרֹת

RAMBAM

Hilchos Kiddush HaChodesh - Taaniyos

In today’s Rambam, we are finishing the halachos of Kiddush Hachodesh! In perek Yud-Ches and Yud-Tes, we learn more about how the Beis Din knows if the witnesses are telling the truth that they saw the moon. They make calculations to figure out if it is possible to see the moon on a certain night.

But just because there IS a new moon doesn’t mean that anyone can see it! Sometimes the moon is very low in the sky and someone needs to be on top of a mountain to see it, or it might be hidden behind clouds.

The Rambam explains what the Beis Din does if nobody sees the moon for many months — they can’t just make every month be 30 days long, because that will mess up the calendar! The Beis Din follows a pattern, like we do nowadays: one long month, and then one short month. That way, even if there are no witnesses, the Yidden will all be keeping a proper calendar.

One of the questions the Beis Din asks people is, “Which way was the moon pointing when you saw it?” The Rambam explains how the Beis Din knows if their answer makes sense: It depends on where the sun is! The part that we can see of the moon is because the sun is shining on it and making it lit up. (You can try this yourself using a ball and a flashlight in a dark room!)

The sun’s “path” (orbit) around the earth and the moon’s orbit aren’t like two circles on a flat piece of paper. They are both tilted in different directions, so sometimes the sun is a little bit higher or lower in the sky than the moon is. Since it is shining down at the moon, or up at the moon, it makes the moon look like it’s pointing in a different direction! (You can try this with your flashlight too!)

The Rambam tells us how to calculate this ourselves, so we can know which way the moon should be pointing on Rosh Chodesh.

We also learn the first perek of a new set of halachos about fasts that the Chachomim make for the whole town. If something scary happens, we need to daven to Hashem of course, and also fast to ask for Hashem to help us. The Rambam talks about WHO needs to fast, and WHEN we’re not supposed to make this kind of fast.

The Rambam says that if a person says that something just happened by chance, it is cruel! Hashem wants us to do teshuvah, and by saying that it was just by nature, it will stop us from doing teshuvah properly, and we won’t be able to get all of Hashem’s special brachos.

Hilchos Geneivah - Perek Vov

We aren’t allowed to buy something that probably was stolen. For example, we aren’t allowed to buy something from a person who tells us to hide it, or from a person who usually doesn’t have that kind of thing, unless we are SURE it belongs to them!

Doing Yourself a Favor

During the Three Weeks, we add in learning Torah (especially halacha) and in tzedakah and Gemilus Chassadim, to speed up the Geulah. We see this in the posuk “Tzion Bemishpat Tipadeh Veshaveha BeTzedaka” — that Yerushalayim will be redeemed through learning Torah (mishpat) and giving tzedakah! To do these right, we need to also work on our Tefillah, where we make our connection to Hashem stronger, which helps us to learn Torah and give tzedakah properly.

Here is a story about how we should think about giving tzedakah and helping others:

One time the Rebbe Rashab told his son, the Frierdiker Rebbe, to travel to a place and help a certain businessman there.

When the Frierdiker Rebbe came back, he told his father what had happened. “I did everything you told me to do. I did the favor for the businessman in the best possible way.”

The Rebbe Rashab answered, “You are making a mistake. You did the favor to yourself, not to that person! For that person, Hashem did him a favor, by sending a shliach to help him. But what you did helped yourself much more.

“Like the Medrash says, ‘Yoser MiMah SheBaal HaBayis Oseh Im Ha’Oni, Ha’Oni Oseh Im Baal HaBayis.’ ‘More than the rich person does for the poor person (by giving him tzedakah), the poor person is doing for the rich person (by giving him the chance to do a mitzvah)’.”

TEFILLAH

Elokai Neshama

Elokai, Neshama Shenasata Bi Tehorah Hi... “Hashem, the neshama that You put into me is pure!”

The Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya that this paragraph in Birchos Hashachar, which we say before the beginning of davening, helps us start our day with a feeling of Mesiras Nefesh.

In Elokai Neshama, we speak about how Hashem took our pure and holy neshama, and gave it to us to use for as long as we are alive. In this paragraph, it seems like Hashem and our neshama are the only things that exist.

Really, that is the truth! Our body and the world around us are just tools for the neshama to do Hashem’s shlichus.

When we start our day with understanding this, we’ll be ready to act this way too. If there is nothing except for our neshama and Hashem, we will not get worried by things that try to stop us. We will be ready to do whatever it takes to do what Hashem wants from us, starting with the Mesiras Nefesh of davening — giving over our Neshama to Hashem by davening without letting anything distract us.

Nowadays, we are all tomei. We can’t do anything about most of this tumah, because we don’t have the ashes of the Parah Adumah! But when Moshiach comes, Hashem will make us all tahor!
