Community Resilience Against the Health Effects of Climate Change
As California experienced a record-breaking heat wave, Americares and the Alliance hosted a virtual conversation on September 8 to explore the impact of climate change on the health of communities. Representatives from Stanford University, Public Health Institute, UCSF, and Google participated in the discussion, which explored salient health concerns about our changing environment, particularly with respect to wildfires and air pollution. "We know that people who are vulnerable before a disaster are even more vulnerable during and after a disaster," said Kristin Stevens, Americares director of Climate and Disaster Resilience, who also commented that climate change is a continuing disaster. The panelists discussed their work to build resilience, support preparedness/disaster management efforts, and address the health inequities resulting from climate change. Learn more here.

UC Davis Solving "Wicked Problems"
UC Davis Grand Challenges recently announced the launch of several key focus areas, including Emerging Health Threats, the Climate Crisis, and Sustainable Food Systems. Grand Challenges, a campuswide effort to address some of the most daunting issues facing our planet, is being led by the university's Vice Provost of Grand Challenges, founder of the One Health Institute, and Bay Area Global Health Alliance board member Jonna Mazet. "People are both causing and becoming the victims of wicked problems," said Mazet. "Unfortunately, the impacts are not equally distributed, and we must recognize and address how inequitable and extreme these impacts already are on underrepresented and marginalized communities." The aim is to harness innovation in these areas and advance solutions to these complex problems through transdisciplinary research and collaboration. In April, Grand Challenges hosted the Pandemic Preparedness Roadmap Workshop, co-sponsored by the Alliance, and the university has secured the first $1 million for the Institute for Pandemic Intelligence. Additional focus areas are under consideration and development, and nominations are welcome. Visit the Grand Challenges website for more information.

Google Health Equity Summit: Building Trust
The Alliance joined other Google partners and community leaders on September 12 for a summit on building trust to scale impact in our health equity ecosystem. "We are dedicated to making access to care easier for everyone, especially for people who need it the most," said Hema Budaraju, senior director, Google Search, and Alliance board member. During the summit, she shared updates that Google has made to help people more easily navigate Medicare- and Medicaid-related information. Dr. Ivor Horn, director of Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health for Google, announced two additional equity initiatives, THE-IQ and a data analysis partnership with Fitbit, offering researchers more insights into health inequities. Many summit stakeholders emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary, cross-sector partnerships to tackle systemic health inequities. Click here to learn more about these opportunities. Monkeypox Outbreak: Members Respond
Santa Clara County Health Officer and Public Health Director Sara Cody and experts from Alliance member organizations UCSF, Stanford University, PRC, San Francisco Community Health Center, PHI, and Chevron shared vital learnings and challenges on the global monkeypox outbreak at an August 25 webinar co-hosted by the Alliance and UCSF’s Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS). An exhausted health workforce, fighting stigma and misinformation, inequities in testing and care, and inadequate public health funding were some of the key challenges the speakers, from across sectors, brought to the discussion. On the solutions side, several agreed that strong partnerships – at the community level and with the private sector – were critical, especially in building trust. Innovation in surveillance and treatment was also essential in addressing the crisis. Read more insights and watch the webinar here. Learn more about how our members are responding here.
