Return of Raglan Airfield

Righting a wrong in our history was the theme behind a Waikato District Council decision regarding the Raglan Airfield land this week.

Councillors unanimously agreed to approve staff’s engagement with the Office for Crown Relations (Te Arawhiti) and other agencies to facilitate the return of the Raglan Airfield land to its rightful owners. Read more here.

No new bottle stores. Do you agree?

We are proposing no new standalone bottle stores in Tuakau, Te Kauwhata, Huntly, Ngāruawāhia, Raglan and other areas in the district, in the draft Local Alcohol Policy.

A variety of other changes are also proposed.

Do you agree with this? Have your say by 11 September. Read more.

Helping those in need

It’s always nice to be able to help our furry friends. We had some dog food left over from a recent event which had been donated by our awesome sponsor Hill’s Pet Nutrition… So we decided to give it to those in need.

Thanks for helping to distribute some of the food and these great photos Huntly West Community Hub.

Pōkeno Park Pup-date

Join the Waikato Pound Pups/Waikato District Council Animal Control team at the Avon Road dog park in Pōkeno for a fun filled day with your 4-legged best friend.

The event is open to friendly dogs of all shapes and sizes. There will be stalls with dog treats and doggy accessories, and our Animal Control team will be there to answer any dog questions you have. They will also be bringing some of the dogs we currently have up for adoption.

Come along from 10am-1pm, Saturday 27th August 2022 and check it out here!

World Rally Championships

Councillors have officially paved the way for the World Rally Championships New Zealand leg to be held in our district.

They voted (12-1) to approve the closure of roads in the Raglan and Te Akau areas to allow the event to take place on 29 September.

Do you pickup after your dog?

Did you know there are more than 15,000 dogs in the Waikato district? That’s a lot of daily walks – and a lot of poop!

So we can all enjoy our streets and parks without stepping in doggy doo, please remember your poop bags, keep an eye on your pooch and scoop the poop!

Elbow Boat Ramp

Our thanks goes out to Ngati Te Ata Kaumātua and whānau who hosted our staff, councillors, contractors and community members for the official opening of the new Elbow Boat Ramp – Te Tauranga o Te Horeta last Friday morning.

The project, led by Project Manager Trevor Ranga, required extensive engagement with hapu and the local community.

The result of months of hard work is an all-tide boat ramp ready for everyone to use.

Port Waikato and Gordonton Blueprints

You spoke, we listened!

Port Waikato, you identified that a public realm upgrade at the wharf was a top priority, as well as addressing the lack of gathering space.

Gordonton, you want the markets reestablished as well as parking infrastructure and safety protocols to be implemented.

For more about both blueprints and all priorities for both communities read here.

What can we improve?

We need your voice to inform our district play, active recreation, and sport plan. ‘Play’ includes unstructured activities that are spontaneous, fun, accessible, social and can occur anywhere; ‘Active recreation’ is generally a non-competitive activity that you take part in for the purpose of wellbeing and enjoyment.
