Increase in neglected dogs

We're sad to report that we've been seeing an increasing number of skinny and neglected dogs in our district. We've recently had 13 dogs arrive in our care with a body score of 1/5 - this is lowest before death.

If you see anything that you are concerned about please report this to us or SPCA Waikato/Coromandel. You can do this anonymously. If you are struggling we can help! Give us a call on 0800 492 452 to discuss what assistance we can offer.

Congratulations to our team at Woodlands

We are so proud of the Woodlands Estate team who took home the Outstanding Wedding Ceremony Venue title at the Wedding industry awards.

The Woodlands Homestead and events are managed by the Woodlands Trust, and the gardens are managed by our Gardeners. Check out their website here!

Railway staion update

We have completed a variety of works at Raahui Pookeka | Huntly Railway Station over the past two years including improving the tracks, building a new rail platform and building a park and ride facility.

We are also working on the relocation of the historic Huntly Station building back to its original site and aim to have this done by October this year. Read more.

Our staff contribute to Nelson flooding response

Three of four Waikato District Council staff deployed to the Nelson-Tasman area last week for the National Emergency Management Agency’s response to the flooding crisis were put into management positions

Anisha McPhee, Niall McGrath and Jason Win led their teams from an Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) that contained around 100 Civil Defence personnel, split over two 12-hour shifts per day.

The four returned from their week-long stint on the weekend – worn out, but feeling privileged to work alongside other Civil Defence staff, and proud of their contribution to helping the people of the weather-battered region.

Advice from a waterfall: Make a splash! 3km walk/ride from Punt Hill through a QEll protected Native bush to Vivian falls in Onewhero.

Check our website for more walks and trails in our district.

4WD drivers cause havoc

Four-wheel drive enthusiasts are being urged to stop driving on the shores of Lake Whangape as they are contributing to the poor water quality of the second largest lake in the lower Waikato River basin.

There have been recent issues with vehicles damaging fences at Shuggs Landing, a public access point for the lake, which is between Rangiriri and Glen Murray.

Off-roaders have also been driving along the beach and damaging the foreshore at the far end of the beach. Read more.

Pōkeno Pup-date

Thank you to everyone who came along to our first Pup-date at Pōkeno Park on the weekend.

Over 100 four-legged friends and their owners came along to check out the awesome stalls with dog treats and doggy accessories plus meet our Animal Control team with the Waikato Pound Pups adoption dogs.

New loos for Tamahere

We’re ready to roll with some new loos for Tamahere!

Construction is planned for later this year, so you won’t need to hold on much longer.

The new toilets will replace the portable ones in Tamahere Park, and will include both a standard and an accessible toilet. Read more.

200 more trees planted

Our Community Connections team braved the West Coast weather last Friday to finish off planting in the Okete Reserve near Raglan.

The team planted 200 native plants supplied by Forest Flora.

This programme has been taking place over several years, turning grazing land into coastal forest will help create greater native biodiversity and improving the habitat for wildlife!

Please place item in bagging area

A new self-checkout service is available at our libraries, allowing quick and easy access to checkout and return library books and other items.

Smart library technology allows a grab-n-go approach, meaning you can check in and check out automatically when borrowing and returning items from your local library – no need for individual barcode scanning and checking out with library staff! Read more.

Hidden gem has finished construction

The Cliff Street Walkway in Whāingaroa/Raglan has recently had its steps rebuilt thanks to the hard mahi by our partners at Citycare Property.

Running along the water’s edge at the base of the bank on Cliff Street . You can access the walkway via the Cliff Street Jetty at the end of Bow Street or from the steps leading down from Cliff Street. The boardwalk is only about 140m but with a stunning view of the harbour.
