In Alaska, more than 40 percent of all students who are classified as English learners (EL) are Alaska Native. However, there are critical gaps in understanding how EL policies function for these students. A new study by REL Northwest provides information that Alaska and other states can use to ensure education policy, funding, and service provision support Indigenous EL students. Many districts want to help schools implement equity-centered social and emotional learning (SEL), but few resources exist to support these efforts. At the request of Washington state leaders, REL Northwest developed and delivered a series of trainings to address this need. On our blog, we highlight key takeaways from the trainings that district leaders can use to successfully implement high-quality SEL across their schools. Read the post.
Data from 2012/13 to 2020/21 show that teacher turnover in Alaska has remained steady but high, while principal turnover in the state decreased this academic year. Additionally, rural schools continue to be hardest hit by turnover. Our updated infographic, a follow-up to our 2019 report, suggests new strategies for improving recruitment and retention in Alaska, taking into account the state’s unique challenges. A stakeholder recently asked, "What does the research say about full-day versus half-day school-based preschool programs?" Our Ask A REL librarian searched the literature on this topic and compiled a list of recent, publicly available references and resources. REL Northwest’s goal is to deepen collaboration and evidence use among educators and policymakers on important educational issues identified by stakeholders across the Northwest region. Together, we are putting research into action.
