Director's Update

By Class of 1965 Professor in Leadership Christian Leuprecht

As we embark on the summer, some items and events of note to share with the IIGR community.

The IIGR and its Director were recently successful co-Applicants on two multimillion dollar SSHRC Partnership Grants: on Human-Centric Cybersecurity (HC2) and on 21st Century Borders.  Queen’s University and the School of Policy Studies are actively supporting both partnerships, which will make an important contribution to the IIGR’s research programs over the coming years: For each partnership, the IIGR and its Director are leading the governance.  IIGR fellow Holly-Ann Garnett is leading the democratic resilience track of HC2 and was also recently successful at obtaining a SSHRC Partnership Development to support the Electoral Integrity Project that she now directs, and which will also reinforce research and capacity at the IIGR.  You will hear more about both as the projects roll out over the coming months.  Together with IIGR fellow’s Nadia Verrelli’s grant from Québec’s Secrétariat des Affaires Intergouvernementales canadiennes and my recent Targeted Engagement Grant from the Department of National Defence on COVID-19 and Domestic Military Operations, at a time when the federation once again finds itself under considerable stress, the IIGR continues to make important strides in reaffirming its position as Canada’s pre-eminent university-based institute for innovative research on intergovernmental affairs.

On 31 May I was invited to present expert witness testimony before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National security during hearings pertaining to Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremism. The video of my presentation can be found through this link.

You may also be interested in recent OpEds I authored in the Globe and Mail, making the case for a Canadian foreign intelligence collection agency; and in the Hill-Times, explaining how to structure effective accountability for professional misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence.

In addition, earlier expert witness testimony of mine is referenced in two reports by House of Commons standing committees that were released in recent days.
