The Real Independence

The real independence comes when you are free from your attachments. That freedom is the aim of spiritual life. Possessions are okay, as long as you possess them and you don’t allow them to possess you. Only then can we really celebrate our true independence. Become the master of your own mind. That is the real freedom, the real victory.  Swami Satchidananda

Miracles Can Happen
By Sri Swami Satchidananda

Sometimes miracles happen through someone, even without their knowledge. There have been many who, like Jesus, performed miracles.  And they didn’t claim that they were doing everything, but that it was the God’s will. That shows that there was no ego involved. Miracles should happen that way. There are all sorts of miracles. You might be completely confused, stressed out, or unhappy and then you start doing some Yoga practices. Within a few months, you become a wonderful seeker...  MORE

One of the primary challenges of the spiritual path is sustaining the intention to awaken, even as we encounter considerable obstacles. Compelled by suffering and/or inspired by saintly beings, we may commit ourselves to experiencing the profound peace we understand to be our true nature. We may take up specific practices to free ourselves from the cultural conditioning that filters our perception, limits our vision, and imprisons us in the illusion of separation.  MORE

In this video, host Kim Weeks and Swami Asokananda (president and spiritual director of the New York Integral Yoga Institute) explore the origins, evolution, and modern-day story of Integral Yoga. In the 1980s, when the gay community in New York City was under siege, suffering and dying from a vicious plague yet to be named HIV, Prema Pleva was an inspiring force for Integral Yoga in New York as she welcomed and served those suffering most. In 1985, established what was most likely the first Yoga class for people with HIV and AIDS and taught this class for 30 years before retiring (Prema is now 91). Prema has been an activist in this field as well as a beloved teacher at the NYIYI...  MORE

Sara Novak's article on Discover magazine's website was clearly written pre-pandemic. It turns out she (a writer for Discover, Discovery Health, Popular Science, among others) was writing about a visit to Satchidananda Ashram, what drew her there, and about the field of neurotheology, which strives to understand what goes on in the brains of people undergoing spiritual experiences. What Sara probably didn't know was that Discover magazine was one of Swami Satchidananda's favorite magazines!

Miles Eberle (son of the Yogaville and Integral Yoga Magazine webmaster, Sam, and wife Lilavati) was captured on his daily rounds in Yogaville, where he was born and lived until a few years ago, when he and his family moved to Colorado to be with the rest of the extended Eberle family. Sam narrates this short video, in his typically entertaining style. A lovely tour of Yogaville that includes Mandala Cafe, the Vidyalayam (school) playground, Kailash, and a view of the LOTUS.

The Bhagavad Gita, the great Indian scripture, states Tyagat Shantir Anantaram, which Sri Swami Satchidananda translated as: “The dedicated always enjoy Supreme Peace. Therefore, live only to serve.” Dedication is a practice that, when observed, can bring about a profound transformation in one’s life. From July 17 – 18, Swami Gurucharanananda (Mataji) leads an exploration of the 3 D’s—discipline, devotion, dedication—in relation to the teacher or Guru. More info here.
