2021 RECAP AND CLOSING
Hello all, I thought I’d take the occasion of this last newsletter of the year to thank you all for your attention and interest in the Network and its continued achievement through some odd times. To recap some highlights, in 2021 we: held our Emerging Issues in Science and Society event online; maintained a great schedule of seminars; supported an in-person AusSTS graduate workshop; awarded another round of grants to a superb group of projects; and profiled some of the great interdisciplinary work we support. There have been some changes in personnel, including the departure of Dr Thao Phan (Program Coordinator), who has moved on to a great postdoc opportunity, and Giles Campbell-Wright (Media and Communications Officer), who has moved onto another opportunity with a tech start-up. Carina Truyts has joined us as the new Program Coordinator and, in 2022, we will also be joined by Tyler King as another Program Coordinator.

But for now, I hope you all have a good end to your year and I look forward to all the Network has planned in 2022!

Cheers,
Tim

The expression “Africa Rising” refers to an emerging middle class, or the harbinger of a new era for the continent – a claim that is debated. On the one hand, development economists measure the magnitude of the middle class while anthropologists and sociologists critique their economism. This debate is locked in opposition: quantitative versus qualitative. What’s missing is an account of motivations behind the Africa Rising claim itself. Who needs a definition of the middle class? The answer lies in the work of international consultancies, such as McKinsey & Company. In predicting and promoting the Africa Rising Narrative, consultancy firms have directed attention to the potential role of the private sector for public financing. “The middle class” is an actionable category of finance for the development of capital markets on the continent.

Dr Monique Mann is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Deakin University, and an expert in surveillance. Her 2020 Incubator project tackles just this issue. Dr Mann lectures in surveillance in Deakin Criminology (in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs), and her research focuses on surveillance and social justice. In this blogpost we learn about the confluence of factors that gave rise to the interdisciplinary project that Dr Mann is leading, the pros and cons of researching a ‘live’ problem, and the import of a genuinely interdisciplinary approach.

This post is the final instalment in the 2021 'Interdisciplinary Experiences' series
