Bay Area Academics Offer National Pandemic Thought Leadership

Researchers and clinicians at the Bay Area's top universities have taken on a critical role as influencers and thought leaders over the past two years. In a San Francisco Chronicle article to mark the start of the new year, UCSF's Bob Wachter, George Rutherford, Monica Gandhi, and Jeanne Noble along with Jonathan Swartzberg from UC Berkeley all predicted relatively rosy forecasts for 2022, even as the newest wave of COVID-19 infections were threatening the capacity of our local hospitals. Stanford's Robert Siegel, by contrast, offered a more cautious tone, expressing concern about the likelihood that new variants will trigger another devastating wave. Beyond the Bay Area, national and international press seek out and welcome the expert advice and opinions of our member universities. Here's a sampling from the past month.

New Frontiers in Treating COVID-19

As Omicron relentlessly reaches all corners of the globe, Bay Area Global Health Alliance members continue to be at the forefront of innovating treatments that can lessen its deadly toll. Vir Biotechnology's monoclonal antibody Sotrovimab (developed in conjunction with GlaxoSmithKline) has been recommended by the World Health Organization for use with patients who have non-severe illness. Sotrovimab has been shown to be the only monoclonal antibody that works effectively against the Omicron variant. Pfizer's antiviral pill, Paxlovid, given in the first few days of an infection, was recently granted an EUA by the FDA, joining Merck's molnupiravir. Human-Centered Design in Global Health

Bay Area Global Health Alliance members Equalize Health, IDEO.org, JSI, PATH, and Population Services International contributed to Global Health: Science & Practice's special issue on Design for Health: Human-Centered Design Looks to the Future. It covers the integration of HCD into global health programming, measurements, and how design can help support interdisciplinary solutions. Read the articles here.

How to Scale Digital Health Solutions

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated innovations in digital health, like Viamo's mobile telephone technology, which are helping bring healthcare to even the hardest-to-reach people around the globe. Viamo's platform allows for easy and effective communication through Interactive Voice Response (IVR), SMS, web app, Facebook messenger, etc. It is accessible to those with low literacy skills and basic phones. Learn more about how Viamo and others are scaling their innovations in this Devex article.
