Happy New Year everyone!

Michael always tells me not to mix messages here, but I can never focus on just one thing I want to share with you. So thank you for scrolling down to see all sections of this newsletter.

First, a quick reminder: The Baroque Big Band "makeup" concert for our north-of-Boston audience is in less than two weeks: Sunday, Jan 30, at 4 pm, in South Church, Andover, 41 Central Street. As you may remember, we had to cancel the Andover performance because one of our players woke up that day with COVID. We may all feel we're in a disorienting holiday time warp, but it's a rare and happy opportunity to bring this program back. It's such beautiful music that we are thrilled to have a chance to play it for a live audience again.

If you had a ticket to the Dec 5 concert, you can use it on Jan 30 - no need to order or print a new ticket. You can also buy a new one using the link below. And thanks for remembering our COVID rules (listed down below).

VALENTINE CONCERT:

NO ORDINARY WOMEN
And now on to our Valentine Concert, our annual tribute to Love, featuring three centuries of beguiling works by extraordinary women composers.

Saturday, February 12, 4:00 pm  West Parish Church, Andover

Sunday, February 13, 5:30 pm St Paul’s Church, Brookline

In this program, three new dynamic artists will be making their Mistral debuts: cellist Christine Lamprea, soprano Simone Paulwell, and BSO horn player Rachel Childers. Mistral favorites - violinist Sarita Kwok, violist Stephanie Fong, and pianist Sophie Scolnik-Brower - and I will complete the all-women roster!

Simone Paulwell, soprano - Rachel Childers, horn - Sophie Scolnik-Brower. piano - Stephanie Fong, viola - Julie Scolnik, flute -Julianne Lee, violin - Sarita Kwok, violin - Christine Lamprea, cello

The music vaults across centuries and styles: a violin fantasy by African American composer Florence Price; two gorgeous trios by French composers Louise Farrenc and Melanie Bonis; a tour-de-force string quartet by famed German composer Fanny Mendelssohn; a feisty song cycle by American composer Gwyneth Walker based on poetry by the Black poet Lucille Clifton; and finally, a haunting mixed-ensemble work called "Island Nocturnes," by the living composer Elizabeth Brown, whose music has been called “luminous, dreamlike, and hallucinatory.”

  • Florence B. Price: Fantasy for violin & piano
  • Louise Farrenc: Trio for flute, cello, piano
  • Fanny Mendelssohn:  String Quartet in Eb major
  • Gwyneth Walker: No Ordinary Woman (poetry by Lucille Clifton)
  • Mel Bonis:  Excerpt from Scènes de la forêt Op. 123
  • Elizabeth Brown: Island Nocturnes for mixed ensemble

Finally, a million thanks to those of you who already read my memoir. Besides the thrill of seeing this book in print after 40 years of trying to tell this story, the most gratifying part of this odyssey has been hearing readers tell me that they couldn't put it down, and that it moved them and brought back stories of their own. All info, including interviews, trailer, reviews, and links, can be found on my author site. There will be copies for sale at our concerts, which of course I'd be thrilled to sign afterwards.  Thank you!  Julie
