Food Insecurity and Child Wasting

Amid a looming threat of famine in certain regions, the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health recently spoke with two faculty members for their insights into food insecurity. David Lobell is a leading expert on agriculture, food security, and how food access is impacted by climate change. Eran Bendavid explores how changing environments (natural, social, or political) impact and shape population health in poorer parts of the world. Read their interviews here and here.

The myriad factors the Stanford researchers address in their interviews are creating a perfect storm and increasing food insecurity worldwide. In children in the hardest-hit regions, extreme food insecurity manifests tragically in wasting. Last month, at UNGA 77, USAID administrator Samantha Power announced that donors committed an additional $280 million to fight child wasting. Earlier, in July, Power announced that USAID and global philanthropies, including the Eleanor Crook Foundation, joined other public and private agencies with a $250 million commitment. A total of $530 million will be given to UNICEF to help combat child wasting. Mary Pittman, chair of the Bay Area Global Alliance board and president and CEO of the Public Health Institute, called for redoubling our efforts to address global malnutrition and spoke to nutrition's role in health equity at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Rome. Her message was continued by Rissa Sorgho of PHI’s Rise Up at the World Health Summit. Read more about PHI's nutrition and food security initiatives here.

Increasing Access to Diagnostics in LMICs

Roughly 47 percent of the world's population has little to no access to diagnostics. As part of their efforts to bridge the diagnostics gap, PATH and Accenture ADP created an interactive dashboard that examines the market failures, region by region, in the complicated diagnostics ecosystem. The report issues a concrete step-by-step call to action from diagnostics stakeholders—from funders to academia, global agencies, and the public and private sectors— to provide access to quality diagnostics in LMICs. Zenysis' support, along with support from other private sector partners, will help the Global Fund increase the impact of its investment in health programs addressing AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria around the world. Google Search's Commitment to Public Health and Sustainability

At the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health in late September, Google reinforced its commitment to health by announcing the launch of new search features to help Americans access public food benefits and healthcare services. "I was honored to participate in this conference and am proud of Google Search's commitments to this mighty cause," said Hema Budaraju, Alliance board co-vice chair and Google's senior director of Product, Health & Search Social Impact. Google is also taking concrete steps to make sustainability information more accessible, empowering people to make informed decisions. Learn more about these developments here, herehere, and here.

Despair and Hope—The Global Mental Health Crisis

At YTH Live Global, an annual event hosted by ETR, the Alliance organized a panel discussion exploring the challenges and opportunities of addressing the global youth mental health crisis. Experts from GoogleHopelab, and UCSF discussed fostering community on tech platforms and collaborating to create effective digital interventions for youth mental health. "If we can use technology as a way to disseminate interventions [for kids and teens], that could really improve the access problem," said Renee Schneider, lead, Mental and Behavioral Health Center of Excellence at Google.
