You are the Universe

What you see in the macrocosm you see in the microcosm; you are a universe by yourself. Not only you, but each and every one of your cells is a universe. How many solar systems do you have in you? How many atoms? Countless. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.”  Swami Satchidananda

The Monkey Mind
By Sri Swami Satchidananda

Some of the great Yoga Masters have compared the mind to a drunken monkey that has been bitten by a scorpion! You have such a mind, but when you allow the mind to do whatever it wants, you don’t really notice how mischievous it is. It is only when you try to keep it in one place, that you realize how restless it is. For example, you might have a small dog at home. Normally, you don’t restrain the dog and it just freely roams around the house. One day you might be expecting a friend to come visit...  MORE

September 8th marks the 133rd Birth Anniversary of H. H. Sri Swami Sivananda, the Guru of Sri Swami Satchidananda. This short documentary captures some of Swami Sivanandaji's key teachings and it also features rare vintage video. Join Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville for an online program in honor of this anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 pm ET and the Integral Yoga of New York program at 5:30 pm ET.

Sri Swami Sivananda said that our suffering brings out the essence in us, just as an herb releases its fragrance when crushed. Diamonds are formed through intense pressure.... The entire human race is suffering today and heroes are being born. Who will we be on “the day after” this pandemic? Can we allow ourselves to be refined and strengthened? Is there a little bit of heroism in us? What will it take for us to “step up” and practice Yoga in a way that will meet the demands of the day?  MORE

Meditation: Getting Unstuck
An Interview with Sharon Salzberg

One of Buddhism’s most respected teachers in the West shares her initial experiences with lovingkindness meditation and the value of beginner’s mind.
IYM: One of your main teachers was Sayadaw U Pandita?
Sharon Salzberg: I first met Sayadaw U Pandita when he came to our center in Barre, Massachusetts to teach a three-month retreat. We met with him six days a week to describe our practice.... His teaching style was such that he’d say the same thing again and again until something shifted in you.  MORE

Now, for the first time he reflects upon both the defining moments of his lifetime as a naturalist and the devastating changes he has seen. The film was produced by the World Wildlife Fund and is a first-hand account of humanity’s impact on nature and a message of hope for future generations. It releases on September 28th in cinemas and later this year on Netflix. Enjoy the trailer!

New Book: Spiritual Practice for Crazy Times
An Interview with Phil Goldberg

IYM: How can we stay spiritually sane in the midst of madness?
Phil Goldberg: Anxiety, fear, and other toxic emotions have been ramped up, and that makes taking refuge with spiritual practices that much more vital. The consistent use of effective methods such as deep meditation, mindfulness, prayer, Yoga, etc., doesn’t only offer temporary relief. Some of the peace and mental clarity sticks to us when we return to face the world.  MORE

Jayan, our kind and calm chief of security, has emerged from the mandatory two weeks of quarantine following his return from Detroit for the memorial service for his older brother, taken by COVID-19. He expressed his deep compassion for our beloved country: “So much pain and suffering.” And off then off he went, making the rounds of our 700 acres here in the forest of central Virginia. Jayan has a secret superpower. He’s been at this Yoga life for quite a while now and wherever he goes he creates a palpable sense of peace. (Report and photo by Jeff Ananda Kamen.)
