Digging Wells

Whatever method, spiritual practice or path you choose, stick with it. Don’t be constantly changing. It’s like digging a well. If you keep moving from one site to another, trying out this and that, you will never reach your goal.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti

Living a Healthy Life
By Sri Swami Satchidananda

Once, I was driving from one town to another in the region of Shillong, which is in the northeastern part of India. At that time, Shillong had recently won its independence. The politicians told the people that everyone was now free. Some of the country people felt that they were free to do anything they wanted. As I was driving, I saw a few people sitting right in the middle of the road, playing cards and I stopped the car and walked over to them. I asked, “What are you doing in the middle of the road?” MORE

In the early 1990s, in an effort to meet anyone who wished to practice exactly where they are, Swami Satchidananda brought together two of his monastic students to serve those who could not access the traditional Integral Yoga class. Swami Suddhananda (a Yoga teacher with Cerebral Palsy) and Swami Sarvaananda, PhD (an educator and former sports coach) were tasked with developing “Gentle Integral Yoga Hatha” in service of this goal. Swami Satchidananda went over every asana...  MORE

In this video, Dr. M. Mala Cunningham shares some powerful ways in which Yoga and meditation can be understood through the lens of neuroscience. She provides clarity and insight in navigating the yogic path through understanding psychology, mindfulness, meditation, and neuroscience. Dr. Cunningham is a leading expert in the field of Yoga therapy and a distinguished member of the faculty for the Integral Yoga Therapy Certification program.

Yoga understands the brilliant function of pain. One difference between Yoga and Western medicine is the perspective on pain and suffering. In the hospital, pain is the adversary, and the treatments are there to “kill” it. They often prescribe “pain killers” especially when they don’t know what else to do. In the classical Yoga model of illness, pain is there to help us. Swami Satchidananda often said, “Physical pain is a messenger. It is not there to kill you and you don’t have to kill the pain..."  MORE

It was my second Yom Kippur as a newly ordained rabbi, and I had the honor of delivering the sermon—on forgiveness—to thousands of congregants. Yom Kippur is the most solemn holy day in the Jewish calendar. Each word of my sermon had been carefully crafted; each text meticulously explained. I spoke about my personal struggles with repairing relationships within my own family. The energy in the room was palpable. I felt satisfied with my content and delivery, and I was fairly sure that the sermon would be reviewed positively at the plethora of post-fast gatherings... MORE

Moving Toward Expansion, Integration and Freedom
By Durga Leela, BA, C-IAYT, AYT, eRYT500, CAS/PKS

Much has changed in the United States—and the world—since Integral Yoga started to put together its Yoga Therapy certification program. Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville (Integral Yoga’s headquarters) is located close to Charlottesville, Virginia, where in 2018, “Unite the Right” happened (now referred to chillingly as “8/11”) and was a horrifying display of how unresolved many of America’s race problems truly are. This was only to be the beginning of a series of tragedies... MORE

Too much time in front of the news can leave us in a state of despair of the disrepair of our current world. We need to know that are solutions and ways that we can participate in creating solutions. Learn more about regenerative agriculture and how this approach to cultivating our relationship with planet Earth can be healing for us individually and collectively.

The Integral Yoga Virtual Studio (IYVS) features a calendar of the vast line-up of classes, programs and trainings hosted by Integral Yoga centers. Yogaville Online is hosting "Realizing Your Inner Strength: Fall Silent Retreat" Oct 8–11.
SPECIAL EVENT! Oct. 2–4: Virtual Coast-to-Coast Global Celebration: 50 Years of Integral Yoga on 13th Street New York and in San Francisco! Each center will host individual programs as well as joint programs.

The James River meanders quietly past Yogaville, seemingly untroubled by the world. I took it as a sign that this is a good time to remember that our human essence, given a chance to reveal itself, is peace and joy, love and light. All the practices of Yoga—the meditation, Integral Yoga Hatha, vegetarian diet, openhearted service to others, and the conscious practice of kindness—help to bring forth the exquisite beauty that lives inside each of us. The True Self, connected in harmony with the entire universe. (Text/photo: Jeff Ananda Kamen)
