Fulfill Your Continuing-Education Requirements with Our Virtual Fall Workshop Series Next Month

Our nonprofit has curated a virtual workshop series to fulfill all six elective hours required by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors.

With discounts for members, the workshops will be held in mid-November prior to the Nov. 30 deadline for general contractors to complete their continuing education. These classes may also meet continuing-education criteria for some other trade organizations.

We will be offering the two-hour mandatory course required for GCs in future years, but this year we are referring people to Environmental Solutions Group, which offers the mandatory class as a standalone virtual offering on Mondays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 9. If you cannot make those dates, reply to this email and we're happy to refer you to another provider offering the mandatory course virtually over several dates in the next month or so prior to the Nov. 30 deadline.

We hope you'll choose to fulfill your elective credits through Green Built Alliance. Please let us know what class topics you're interested in us offering in the future, and feel free to reach out if you need support on other continuing-education requirements.

Free Bonus Class In December: Energy Efficiency for Everyone

Following our continuing-education series in November, we will also be offering a free virtual class in December geared toward anyone interested in learning about improving the energy efficiency of your home to increase comfort, save money and reduce environmental impacts.

We will discuss things you can do yourself to save energy, how to obtain rebates and incentives that can help you cover the costs, and how to hire local professionals to support you on bigger jobs. The workshop includes an introduction to solar energy and how to pay for it.

Led by Green Built Alliance Executive Director Sam Ruark-Eastes, this workshop is geared toward existing homes with a goal of making energy efficiency accessible for everyone, including those on a limited budget.

The event is free and open to the public. Please reserve a complimentary ticket via Eventbrite to save your space.

Green Built Alliance Statement on Proposed Code Changes

At Green Built Alliance, we have seen how energy efficiency saves money, creates jobs, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Based on our years of experience in this field, we recently reached out to the NC Building Code Council to express our concerns about the proposed changes to the NC State Building Code: Residential Energy Efficiency.

As we understand it, a current proposal for changes would circumvent the ERI (HERS) section's envelope backstop and all of the mandatory minimum energy efficiency requirements. Additionally, there is no framing for the ERI calculation (approved software, definitions, and documentation, for example). Further, no cost analysis of the impact to residents of these homes was done, though required by policy and statute.

These are significant changes to the code that will have determinant impacts to economy and environment.

The energy code should be getting stronger not weaker. Also, incentives like Duke's New Residential construction program help builders cover costs of energy efficiency and pass along long-term savings to occupants.

Our nonprofit has encouraged the NC Building Code Council to reject the short-sighted proposal and strengthen state energy-efficiency standards.
