Complete Your Continuing-Ed Hours for NCLBGC, AIA and Others With Our Three-Class Virtual Series This Week and Next

Our nonprofit has curated a virtual workshop series to fulfill all six elective hours required by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, as well as being eligible for credit through the American Institute of Architects.

With discounts for members and free equitable access tickets available to individuals who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or a person of color), the three workshops will be offered this week and next prior to the Nov. 30 deadline for general contractors to complete their continuing education. These classes may also meet continuing-education criteria for architects and other trade organizations.

  • 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12: Building Net-Zero Homes with Amy Musser & Matthew Vande of Vandemusser Design (Approved for elective hours via NCLBGC and approval pending for AIA HSW credit)
  • 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17: Edible and Native Plants of WNC with Laura Ruby of YummyYards (Approved for elective hours via NCLBGC and eligible for Learning Units through AIA)
  • 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Nov. 19: Marketing Green Homes with Mary Love of Love the Green Real Estate Consulting
(Approved for elective hours via NCLBGC and eligible for Learning Units through AIA)
For GCs who still need to complete the two-hour mandatory course, we are referring individuals to the NC Builder Institute affiliated with the North Carolina Home Builders Association, which is providing the mandatory class as a standalone virtual offering over numerous dates the coming weeks.

For GCs who prefer to complete classes in person and all in one day, we are referring to our partners at the Asheville Home Builders Association, which is offering three upcoming sessions of eight-hour days.

We hope you'll choose to fulfill your elective credits through Green Built Alliance. Please let us know what class topics you're interested in us offering in the future, and feel free to reach out if you need support on other continuing-education requirements.

Support Our Nonprofit This Holiday and Remember Us in Year-End Giving

With the end of 2020 less than two months away, many people have turned their minds toward ways to give back this holiday season and places to contribute their year-end charitable giving.

We invite those interested in supporting us to donate via Mountain Xpress' annual Give!Local year-end fundraising drive. We receive 100 percent of all donations made to us through that campaign, and offer incentives to donors.

Green Built Alliance Statement on Proposed Code Changes

At Green Built Alliance, we have seen how energy efficiency saves money, creates jobs, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Based on our years of experience in this field, we recently reached out to the NC Building Code Council to express our concerns about the proposed changes to the NC State Building Code: Residential Energy Efficiency.

As we understand it, a current proposal for changes would circumvent the ERI (HERS) section's envelope backstop and all of the mandatory minimum energy efficiency requirements. Additionally, there is no framing for the ERI calculation (approved software, definitions, and documentation, for example). Further, no cost analysis of the impact to residents of these homes was done, though required by policy and statute.

These are significant changes to the code that will have determinant impacts to economy and environment.

The energy code should be getting stronger not weaker. Also, incentives like Duke's New Residential construction program help builders cover costs of energy efficiency and pass along long-term savings to occupants.

Our nonprofit has encouraged the NC Building Code Council to reject the short-sighted proposal and strengthen state energy-efficiency standards.
