March 2021

One year ago today, the World Health Organization characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic. It has been a year of tragic losses, unbearable hardships and systemic inequities laid bare. These harsh realities have been mixed with accelerating innovation, technology and unprecedented partnerships to advance global health equity. Although we grieve, the silver linings give us slivers of hope. Our connections drive us forward.

Friends of the Global Fight Applauds Passage of COVID-19 Supplemental Bill; $3.5B for Global Fund

Congress has passed the American Rescue Plan Act, which includes $3.5 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and $250 million for PEPFAR as part of a broader $10 billion international response to the disease. “The vote is an enormous step forward in saving lives, controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and advancing global health equity,” said Chris Collins, president and CEO of Friends of the Global FightRead more.

Loyce Pace Named Director of Global Affairs at US Department of Health and Human Services

A week after announcing her departure from the Global Health Council, Loyce Pace was sworn in as director of global affairs at the US Department of Health and Human Services. In keeping with her commitment to equity, she promised to "always remember those not at the table or in the room. Being the first woman and person of color in this role, I know there are many more whose voices and experiences matter." Learn more.

Pfizer Vaccine Delivered by Zipline Drone in Ghana

The initial shipment of vaccines from COVAX arrived in Ghana the first week in March. The 4,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine were then promptly dispatched by drone across the Ashanti Region, in the south of the country. Zipline has outfitted the drones to maintain the cold temperatures required by the vaccines. In all, the drones made 36 separate trips on the first day. Zipline is delivering the vaccines in partnership with the Ghanaian government and UPS. According to Gavi, 2.5 million doses of the vaccine will be delivered by drone in Ghana. Read more.

PHI Efforts Allow Thousands of California Farmworkers to Receive the Coronavirus Vaccine

A recent New York Times article highlighted efforts in California to prioritize the coronavirus vaccine for the state's essential farmworkers. PHI's Together Toward Health provided valuable resources and staffing for the vaccination drive, which is being run by eight local community-based organizations in Coachella Valley. The vaccination clinics are held directly in the farmworker communities, easing access. Read the article here.

COVID Offers Opportunity to Rethink Inequitable Roles in Global Health Partnerships

"When we see that the value of this work is not charity but a mutual benefit, we can begin to inch closer to an equal exchange,” writes Michele Barry, director of the Center for Innovation in Global Health at Stanford. Barry invites global health leaders to "reflect and reexamine" their relationships with their global colleagues and take the time to learn the hard-won lessons of their partners around the world. Read more.

Devex's Prescription for Progress Features Alliance Member Experts

Alliance member experts from UC Davis One Health InstituteUCSF, Pfizer, FacebookGlobal Health Council, Global Fund for Women and Vir Biotechnology were featured in a series of virtual conversations at Devex's annual Prescription for Progress event on February 25. The speakers discussed how technology, innovation and partnership can move the needle in global health. Learn more and watch.

Maternity Matters: Leveraging Digital Solutions

Merck for Mothers and the Alliance also partnered with Devex on "Maternity Matters: Leveraging digital solutions at scale to deliver quality maternal health care within UHC.” Speakers included Merck for Mothers’ Mary-Ann Etiebet, WHO’s Bernardo Mariano Junior, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Nosa Orobaton, Accenture’s Natasha Sunderji, and PharmAccess Foundation’s Njide Ndili. "As we converge on this 'new normal' and use more digital tools for everything from mobile payments to food delivery, we need to make sure health is included in the conversation," said Etiebet. Jaime Sepulveda, MD, Executive Director of the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences moderated a discussion with Brie Williams, Professor of Medicine at UCSF, Director, AMEND, Co-director, The ARCH (Aging Research in Criminal Justice Health) Network, and Stefano Bertozzi, MD, PhD, Professor of Health Policy Management, UC Berkeley School of Public Health, Dean Emeritus, UC Berkeley School of Public Health, Interim Director of the UC systemwide programs with Mexico and Co-director, Berkeley Public Health China Program. Watch here.

Using Technology to Advance Global Health Initiatives

Alliance members Neha Agarwal (PATH), Hema Budaraju (Google) and Tim Peck (IDEO.org) were among the featured panelists in a discussion titled “Advancing Global Health Initiatives with Technology” that was part of “Finding Breath,” a UC Berkeley Haas Healthcare Association conference at the end of February. Ben Plumley, the host of A Shot in the Arm podcast, moderated the discussion, which explored how the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated technology design and adaptation, how to bring those solutions to scale equitably and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Learn more and watch.

March 16 | The Value of Human-Centered Design in Global Health: Case Studies in Reproductive Health

Join Bay Area Global Health Alliance members JSI and IDEO.org as they explore how human-centered design (HCD) shifts norms, crafts effective and desirable solutions and pushes the edges of what’s possible in adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH). Using case studies, they will examine their work at the intersection of HCD and AYSRH, how they have worked together with the HCD Exchange and how they continue to evolve their work given new constraints.
