Leadership Opportunities
AMWA-PATH welcomes LIFT Facilitators Dr. Juhi Jain and Dr. Ash Lanehurst to the team. Dr. Jain is a Pediatric Hem-Onc Fellow at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, with an extensive background in human trafficking education and advocacy. Dr. Lanehurst is an Assistant Professor and Licensed Psychologist at the Baylor College of Medicine, with extensive experience caring for and counseling patients that have been trafficked.

The AMWA-PATH Public Relations team is in need of additional support as they manage the group's social media accounts. Additionally, the Education committee needs support as they begin to revise the LIFT curriculum; this project will extend throughout the summer with an expected completion of mid to late fall. Please contact Rachel Geiser at racheligeiser@gmail.com if you are interested in either of these opportunities.

Education Events
The New Jersey LIFT Training on March 6th was a success, with 8 community partners and over 120 attendees. Thanks to the AMWA team at Rutgers Medical School and Olivia Dahl for their hard work in making this event a success!

AMWA-PATH has two virtual LIFT trainings scheduled for the upcoming months, in Dothan, AL and Las Vegas, NV. The Alabama training will take place on April 26th at 5p CT and will be led by Dr. Juhi Jain and Dr. Mollie Gordon; registration is available here. The Las Vegas training has been rescheduled after an unfortunate cancellation in May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This event will take place on Tuesday, May 11 at 5p PST and will be facilitated by Dr. Aarti Vala and Dr. Trudy Reese; registration is available here

Student Committee Updates

The Research Committee is currently led by Emily Anderson and Sneha Aidasani. Right now they're researching human trafficking knowledge among physicians. Fill out this survey to participate. We will be welcoming new student leaders, Minka and Julia, who will take over for Emily and Sneha when they graduate from medical school this summer.

The Fundraising Committee is currently working on creating a raffle in order to support the work that AMWA-PATH does. Items available to purchase for the raffle will include a Medelita scrub set, a FIGS gift card, apple earbuds, and more! Tickets will be available in May through the AMWA store. If you would like to partner with this event, please contact ah13d@med.fsu.edu. You can also purchase an AMWA PATH shirt or donate online.

AMWA Membership

AMWA-PATH is an initiative of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA), and encourages it's members to support our initiative by becoming a member of AMWA! There are countless opportunities for leadership and involvement in initiatives on gender equity, women's health, and public health issues like the opioid epidemic and gun violence.  Students and residents are able to join for a one-time fee that lasts the entirety of medical school or residency, and is accompanied by valuable member discounts for board prep, scrubs and white coats, legal triage, and merchants that more than pay for your membership. Use the special discount code PATH to get 15% off first-time membership here.

COVID-19 and Trafficking

Not only has trafficking itself increased dramatically during the pandemic (un.org), but the likelihood of human trafficking victim-survivors contracting COVID-19 may be considered significantly higher as well. Due to victim-survivors coming into contact with high volumes of people, risk of contracting COVID-19 is increased. This same population may have limited access to necessary healthcare fore COVID-19 treatment. As vaccines become more widely available to the general public, we hope to see a decrease in COVID-19 rates among this population.

Student Spotlight

Rachel Geiser is currently president of the AMWA-PATH student interest group. She graduated from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a B.A. in Political Science in May 2019, and she plans to return to school this fall to get her M.S. in the Science of Healthcare Delivery. Her ultimate goal is to be a healthcare provider and continue working with PATH to help further their mission of widespread human trafficking recognition in healthcare. On the weekends, you can find her hiking, biking, rock climbing, camping, or playing board and card games.
