Why Are We Here?

We are in the world to grow mentally, to gain more experience, to realize the truth.    Swami Satchidananda

Do Not Depend on Anything
By Sri Swami Satchidananda

Happiness is not something that can come from the outside. One of the things we seem to depend upon for our happiness is physical beauty. We don’t want to accept the fact that we will get old and our bodies will change. When we see others getting old we may think to ourselves, Oh, that’s natural. But me? No, I am different from others. Once a great king by the name of Dharmaputra was asked a question: “What is the most surprising or astonishing thing in this world?  MORE

Sam Harris is a bestselling author, neuroscientist and host of the "Waking Up" app and podcast. In this talk, he demonstrates—with scientific rigor and humor—that free will is an inherently flawed and incoherent concept, even in subjective terms. If he is right, this talk might radically change the way you view yourself as a human being—unless you are well-versed in karma theory!

You know that time in your life when you find the one you want to spend the rest of your days with…your soulmate? And you start to lose sight of things you once cared about. When I fell in love with Seth I lost sight of some of my favorite hobbies: fitness, dancing and weight lifting. We were so enamored with each other and spent all our time together kissing, watching movies and playing video games. The pounds began to pack on and as I fell in love with this man, I quickly fell out of love with myself.  MORE

In the early 1970s, Seigler Hot Springs, California was the site of our first Ashram. It was called Yogaville West and it was inhabited by a motley group who became the first residents. Some folks had certain specific skill sets like carpentry or welding, but had emotional issues that were incomprehensible. I came to realize that our Guru, Swami Satchidananda, would often look forward to pair people up on projects who totally did not get along. He would call it, “Rubbing and scrubbing.”  MORE

Dave Brubeck's most famous song is "Take Five." In this video, it is re-imagined with an arrangement by musicians from Sachal Studios in Lahore, Pakistan. The result is a beautiful East-West fusion experience! Brubeck explained that the song is called "Take Five" because it was written in an unusual 5/4 meter. It was one of the first Jazz songs with a time signature other than the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. He appreciated that this version as a huge compliment.

This task force took shape in July of 2020. It's made up of a group of Integral Yogis from the New York and San Francisco Integral Yoga Institutes, as well as Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville. This group meets twice a month to uncover and address any expressions of policies that might support racism and inequities toward our sangha, staff, teachers and students. It has begun a systematic exploration of white privilege which can undermine equitable support in organizations.  MORE
