Preparing for Meditation

Preparing the body for meditation is important because you are trying to keep the mind steady and one-pointed. To do this you begin by making the body steady. This is possible only if you make a firm decision. If the decision is very strong, the body will obey you without complaining.    Swami Satchidananda

Recognize the God in You
By Sri Swami Satchidananda

What we call “God,” is the Cosmic Consciousness. It is our natural state of peace and joy. That Cosmic Consciousness is infinite. It has no limitation, it never changes, it is omnipresent and eternal. That’s what is meant by immortal. It is in you, as the real you. So in simple words, God is the peace within you and the reason you are asked not to disturb your mind. What is it that disturbs your peace? It is anything to which you are attached—anything and everything, including name and fame.  MORE

Sri Shankaracharya was the 8th century Indian philosopher/theologian who consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta. He also organized the Daśanāmi Saṃpradāya (the order of Swamis) of which the Integral Yoga lineage is a part. Swami Sarvapriyananda (spiritual director of the Vedanta Society of New York), presents the history and Vedantic philosophy of the non-dual nature of being. While Samkhya is at the heart of Yoga philosophy, Swami Satchidananda taught the Yoga practices as a pathway to non-dual or unity consciousness.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is understood that our lungs are a delicate entry point connecting us to the outside world. One of its functions is dispersing and spreading defensive or protective (wei) qi. This subcategory of qi lies just under our skin and protects us from climatic conditions. A lung that is not working at its full capacity, will have a weak protective wei qi and a person will be more vulnerable to catching colds and flus and have more allergic reactions.  MORE

I think it is time for us to rethink our relationship with what we are taught on the spiritual path. It’s time to reinvent the spiritual ideal. Let’s start by putting this into context. Many modern-day spiritual practitioners are following traditions that were made for a place and time that looked quite different...  MORE

In this podcast, Rev. Jaganath Carrera and Avi Gordon discuss the importance of wonder and attention, the nature of the mind and the power of acceptance. Rev. During this conversation he notes, "As a human being I only find meaning in my life when I realize I’m attached to the whole; that I’m a part of the whole."

The Guardian newspaper recently reported that Jeremy Gray, a state lawmaker in Alabama (and Yoga practitioner), is facing backlash for a bill he plans to present. The ban, believed to be the only statewide prohibition of its sort, is proving to be tougher to scrub from the statute books than might be expected. The main hurdle to reform lies with conservative Christian groups who argue that just the mere act of allowing Yoga in the classroom will expose kids to the risk of converting to Hinduism!  MORE
