April 2021 Constituent Update

News & Noteworthy Events in Knox County / Commission
This constituent update contains information on the work of Knox County Commission, news about recent experiences, community information and upcoming events. This newsletter is issued at the beginning of each month and generally covers activities of the previous month.

April was a big litter clean-up month. I was proud to participate in trash pickup days in Hardin Valley and Powell. I'm always amazed how much garbage is thrown on the side of the road. ;-( However, Knox County glad to have great community groups that regularly come together and remove massive loads of refuse. If you want to organize a community clean-up or report a dump site, check out this Knox County resource.
A big thanks to the Old City Association for inviting me to speak to their passionate membership group. This re-emerging section of our downtown core is coming to life in new and exciting ways. Learn more about the Old City at this site.
I love supporting our local Scouts, and this month I had the privilege of helping Freddie Blanchard from BSA Troop 42 (Oak Ridge) achieve his Arrow of Light and celebrated the Cub Scout of the Year accomplishment by Oliver DeAlejandro from BSA Troop 757 (Webb). I also enjoyed attending the Distinguished Citizen Award ceremony honoring one of Knox County's business leaders, Air Force Veteran and Lifetime Scout Wes Stowers (Stowers CAT). Congratulations!
After years of development and planning, we officially cut the ribbon on the new Midway Business Park in far East Knox County. This new 345-acre economic asset will be a tremendous tool for recruiting companies to our community.
Learn more about the Midway Business Park here.
If you love radiated tortoises, poison dart frogs, red spitting cobras, gravity defying cuban crocs, and sloths, then look no further than the new Clayton Family ARC Campus at Zoo Knoxville - NOW OPEN! Special Thanks goes out to the Clayton Family for their generous investment in our community.
For over two years, we've been working on efforts to CLEAR, CLEAN and CARE FOR Beaver Creek. In this short video, I explain what a LEVEL 5 jam looks like and the challenges we face to reduce flooding along this 44-mile water trail.
Congratulations to the team at Ancient Lore Village on their grand opening in South Knoxville. This one-of-a-kind boutique event and wedding destination specializes in executive retreats, group celebrations, and luxury weddings.
Pancake-Fest is Back! Every year, the Knox Co. Office on Aging & O'Connor Senior Center holds a pancake breakfast for our senior neighbors. After a year-off due to COVID-19 shutdowns, I was invited to flip the flapjacks for this drive-thru breakfast.
The Knox County FY'22 (July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022) will be presented to County Commission by Mayor Jacobs at an event on Tuesday, May 4th. When released, you'll be able to view it in full here. There will also be three public budget hearings on May 10, June 7 and June 14th (5p @ City/County Building) where citizens can participate in how their tax dollars are spent.
It seems like yesterday that I began this journey as your County Commissioner. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve. Looking ahead, the 2022 election season will be here before we know it and I will be seeking re-election to the Knox County Commission (At-Large, Seat 10).
