Although today officially marks the end of Black History Month, black history is made every day, including here in Council District 12. In your continued support of the Northwest San Fernando Valley and our local businesses, I encourage you to continue supporting our black-owned businesses, who, day in and day out, play a vital role in our community.

Shopping small means investing in your community, strengthening our local economy, and supporting the dreams of entrepreneurs all year long. Let’s make a lasting impact beyond just this month and keep supporting those who make CD12 the incredible place it is. The image above links to show a handful of businesses you can spend the weekend supporting. Please remember that this is only a fraction of black-owned businesses in our community!

And on the subject of supporting people locally, I recently had the pleasure of doing just that by surprising the good folks over at the Granada Hills Salad Bowl with support from my office to ensure they are able to accomplish their mission. The Granada Hills Salad Bowl is committed to growing organic, sustainable produce while fostering connections among neighbors through harvest. This funding will help improve the garden and assist in their quest to produce healthier communities.

Neighborhood Councils Elections

88 of Los Angeles’ 99 Neighborhood Councils are having elections this season, including Granada Hills North NC, Granada Hills South NC, Northridge East NC, Northridge West NC, North Hills West NC, Porter Ranch NC, and West Hills NC. All Neighborhood Council elections will be vote-by-mail and held on different dates through June 2025.

For all the neighborhood councils listed, except West Hills, the last day to file your candidacy is March 3!

Mobility Plan 2035 Community Feedback

Measure HLA was approved by City of Los Angeles voters on March 5, 2024. It requires the City to implement street modifications outlined in Mobility Plan 2035 any time a street improvement (at least one-eighth of a mile long) is made on a street segment that is on the Enhanced Complete Street System, as defined in the ordinance.

To help guide the City's implementation of Measure HLA, the City Planning Department has drafted a table that presents Standard Elements that are reasonably expected to be included in a Mobility Plan Project. The public is being invited to comment on the draft "HLA Standard Elements Table" until March 2, 2025. After public comment is closed, staff will review feedback, consider changes, and present recommendations to the Street Standards Committee in April.

LA Animal Services will offer reduced adoption fees for the weekends in March to help the pets in the six Centers find loving homes. WEEK IN REVIEW

This week, I had the solemn privilege of adjourning in the memory of one of Council District 12’s greats, Brother John Crowe. Avid readers will remember that Brother John Crowe’s life and legacy was celebrated at the City Council late last year with the intention of ensuring he felt the love and appreciation on behalf of the community he served amidst his ongoing health issues.

Rancho San Antonio put it best, “To his colleagues, he was known as disciplined and tireless, an advocate for young people and a champion of redemption. Brother John Crowe touched the lives of everyone he met.”

May Brother John Crowe rest in peace.
