Major Wins For Public Safety
Congratulations to Nathan Hochman on his election as LA County's next District Attorney! This victory marks a pivotal moment for Los Angeles, and I’m eager for a new partner in the continued fight to restore public safety. And, with the landslide victory of Prop 36 across every county in California, we have the opportunity to prioritize rehabilitation and reduce crime by holding repeat offenders accountable. Together, we will create a safer, more just Los Angeles for everyone.
A New Era For LAPD Leadership
On Friday, the City Council confirmed Jim McDonnell as our next LAPD Chief. Chief McDonnell brings over 30 years of experience, having risen through the ranks at LAPD, where he served as Chief of Detectives, Chief of Operations, and First Assistant Chief. He went on to lead the Long Beach Police Department and later served as LA County Sheriff. His combination of insider experience and outside perspective makes him well-suited to lead LAPD forward. Thank you to Mayor Bass and the Police Commission for this thoughtful appointment - CD11 looks forward to working with you, Chief McDonnell!

Zac’s Big Catch Hits Council!
On Friday, I had the thrill of welcoming Zac Ruderman into Council Chambers to celebrate an unforgettable piece of Dodger magic - the game ball from Freddie Freeman’s historic grand slam in Game 1 of the World Series. This wasn’t just a lucky catch, it’s a reminder of how Dodger blue unites us all in pride and passion. Here’s to a moment that will live on in Zachary’s memory and in the hearts of fans Citywide!

Recognizing The Montford Point Marines For Veterans Day

On Friday, I had the privilege of selecting the Montford Point Marines Los Angeles Chapter 8 and Sgt. Jack McDowell (Ret.), who served in World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War, as my Veterans Day 2024 honoree. These men served as the first African Americans in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, breaking racial barriers with remarkable courage. Today, their chapter continues to inspire through community service, youth mentoring, and educational scholarships, leaving a lasting impact on our nation.

Building A Pollinator Corridor In Venice
One of the local sustainability initiatives I am most excited about is the establishment of a pollinator corridor in Venice to create a chemical-free network of native plants and trees to provide habitat and nutrients birds, bees, butterflies, and other local wildlife. Along with bringing the community together to beautify Venice and enhancing our biodiversity, this corridor will stretch from the beach through several Venice neighborhoods. A big thank you to the Venice BID, Verdant Venice, and the CD11 Foundation for their help and support bringing this project to life.

Update On Public Art In Mar Vista
For many years, residents have enjoyed Lori Powers' public art in Mar Vista. However, the Department of Water and Power has ordered the art be removed from their poles due to safety and regulatory issues. Our team will continue to work closely with Lori and our City departments to find alternative locations to display Lori's art in the community.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Matt Halden at matthew.halden@lacity.org.
