Today we are launching a door-to-door campaign to raise awareness about free water testing for lead in the greater Watts area! In partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC), over the next few months if you live in the Watts area you will see the East Side Riders Bike Club going door-to-door to raise awareness about free water testing for lead in Watts.
The Better Watts Initiative (BWI) study, released in August, showed that some water samples in Watts exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s action level for lead. Immediately after their study, I introduced a motion in the City Council calling for a comprehensive plan to address lead exposure in Watts and clear communication strategies to keep residents informed about our progress. The East Side Riders Bike Club’s (ESRBC) door-knocking campaign will ensure that as many residents as possible are aware of the free testing resources available.
This campaign is part of a larger effort, with collaboration from Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), Mayor Bass’ Office, my office, and the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA).
I want to remind everyone that all water quality testing related by LADWP is free and conducted using high-precision, State-accredited laboratory tests. Unfortunately, we have heard reports of companies door-knocking for water testing services and charging fees, but I want to make it clear that no payment is required for LADWP to test your water. If you have questions or want more information about the free testing, please contact LADWP’s Water Quality Hotline at (213) 367-3182. |

On November 5, 2024, City voters approved six Charter measures, marking the most significant government reforms since 1999. Among the changes, a new requirement was introduced that two members of the Board of Harbor Commissioners must reside within the Harbor area—one from San Pedro and one from Wilmington—to ensure local participation as the Port invests in the area. Currently, Charter Section 650 requires one commission member to reside in the Harbor area, as defined by ordinance. This week I introduced a motion calling for the City Attorney to present an ordinance amending the Los Angeles Administrative Code to align with the new Charter provision for the Board of Harbor Commissioners. |

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLAN TASKFORCE FOR VTB |

On Thursday, we attended Caltrans’ Traffic Management Plan Taskforce Meeting for the Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project. Hosting the meeting in Wilmington was appropriate, as this community stands to face the greatest quality-of-life impacts, including increased emissions and cut-through truck traffic in residential neighborhoods. To date, I’m bitterly disappointed with the response and lack of attentiveness that Caltrans has given to our communities, so it will be critically important for us to continue to advocate and press Caltrans for real, effective, and enforceable mitigations.
My office and the community will continue to demand enforceable traffic mitigations, improved road conditions, and stronger enforcement measures before the project begins. Caltrans is planning two more in-person meetings, and comments can also be submitted through the project website at virtualeventroom.com/caltrans/vtb. |

A new crosswalk beacon is being installed at the intersection of Western Ave. and 255th St. to improve pedestrian safety. This beacon will enhance visibility for pedestrians, particularly during low-light conditions, as part of an effort to reduce accidents and ensure safer crossings. The installation is expected to be completed soon, providing a vital upgrade to the area's traffic infrastructure. |

LADOT has fulfilled a request to add new red curbing at the intersection of Vermont and Bixby Ave. to improve traffic flow and enhance safety. The red curbs will limit parking in designated areas, improving visibility for drivers and pedestrians while reducing congestion. The changes will help manage traffic more effectively and ensure smoother movement around busy intersections. |

This week I attended the Human Trafficking Summit hosted by the LAPD at the Harbor City Library which offered valuable insights into ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking in the Harbor area. Experts shared critical information on recognizing the signs of trafficking, supporting victims, and accessing resources available to both law enforcement and the community. The summit emphasized the importance of collaboration and education in raising awareness and taking action against this urgent issue. |

This week, our office participated in Coffee with Law Enforcement, organized by the Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce at Los Novillos Market. We were joined by the LAPD Southeast Division, officers from the California Highway Patrol, and the Sheriff’s Department to discuss local law enforcement issues with community members. |

The San Pedro Faith Consortium hosted its 5th annual interfaith Thanksgiving service at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Thursday evening. This beautiful service was led by religious leaders from The Garden Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, San Pedro United Methodist Church, Temple Beth El, Soka Gakkai International, Chinmaya Mission, and the Al Shareef Mosque from Long Beach. Together, we gave thanks, sang, and enjoyed hot cider and cookies. It was beautiful to see faiths united in fellowship and harmony. |

The Spirit of San Pedro Holiday Parade is happening next Sunday, December 1st, from 1 to 3 PM. This annual event features a variety of community organizations, floats, performances, and appearances by our elected officials! The parade begins at 13th St. and Pacific Ave., turns right at 6th St., and ends at 6th and Center St. Please look out for parking restriction signs along the route. |

It was great to be with residents at the Southeast Spanish Community-Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) meeting at St. Lawrence of Brandisi in Watts on Tuesday. We heard updates from our Senior Lead Officers and a presentation from one of our Public Works Bureaus. I was glad to be available to answer questions from residents on a range of local issues. Not only was there great conversation, but there was great food, a wonderful potluck that brought neighbors together and set the tone for the upcoming holiday season! |

I began the day yesterday morning at Jordan Downs, to distribute food at the 4th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, presented by Phoenix Tower International and the CitiTeam. Thank you to Children Mending Hearts and everyone involved for organizing this event at the Jordan Downs Gym. Events like these where we are able to provide residents with turkeys, stuffing, a bag of groceries, and even new clothing is a reminder of the reason for this season - gratitude and giving. |

On Thursday evening, the city’s Bureau of Engineering and the consultant team who will be responsible for working on the Watts Happening Cultural Center, also known as the Mafundi Building, held an informational session. Community stakeholders had the opportunity to discuss the building’s history and share input on plans for the center’s future. |

This week, we partnered with Gatos Callejeros to participate in a cat food distribution event on Avalon Blvd. Gatos Callejeros rescues under-socialized or medically vulnerable kittens, as well as friendly adult cats, and finds them safe placements. Additionally, they foster and treat injured feral cats during recovery, donate cat food to low-income colony caregivers, and share information about local low-cost spay/neuter options for community cats. |

Valero Refinery held its annual food distribution event on Wednesday, providing baskets filled with necessities for a Thanksgiving feast to seven local schools in our community. Valero’s Thanksgiving Basket distribution is a wonderful way to support families during the holiday season. |

El Jueves asistimos a la reunión del grupo de trabajo del Plan de Gestión del Tráfico de Caltrans para el Proyecto de Reemplazo de la Plataforma del Puente Vincent Thomas. Organizar la reunión en Wilmington fue apropiado, ya que esta comunidad enfrentará los mayores impactos en la calidad de vida, incluido el aumento de emisiones y el tráfico de camiones en vecindarios residenciales. Hasta la fecha, estoy profundamente decepcionado con la respuesta y la falta de atención que Caltrans ha brindado a nuestras comunidades, por lo que será de vital importancia para nosotros continuar abogando y presionando a Caltrans para que adopte mitigaciones reales, efectivas y ejecutables.

Valero Refinery celebró su evento anual de distribución de alimentos el miércoles, entregando canastas llenas de artículos de primera necesidad para una fiesta de Acción de Gracias a siete escuelas locales de nuestra comunidad. La distribución de la Canasta de Acción de Gracias de Valero es una manera maravillosa de apoyar a las familias durante la temporada navideña. |
