The holiday festivities are in full swing across the One-Five, with our neighborhoods coming together to celebrate the joy of the season. We kicked off our second annual Winter Wonderlands, starting last night in Wilmington, where we gathered at Wilmington Town Square Park! Families came together as we lit the Christmas tree and enjoyed an evening of sledding, entertainment, and community. Tonight, we’re keeping the festivities going at the Port of LA Towne Square at Berth 84, bringing holiday cheer to the waterfront. |

One-Five Winter Wonderlands are just getting started, with three more exciting events coming up over the next two weeks in Watts, Harbor City, and the Harbor Gateway. Each will feature snow and sledding, community tree lightings, and festive performances guaranteed to get everyone in the holiday spirit. Through these Winter Wonderlands, we will create lasting memories for our communities, fostering connection and joy for people of all ages. |

Beyond our Winter Wonderland events, we have incredible community-led celebrations adding even more holiday magic to the One-Five. Last Sunday, the San Pedro Holiday Parade filled the streets with marching bands, vibrant floats, and festive cheer. Today, the holiday festivities continue with the Watts Christmas Parade on Central Ave. and 103rd St., and tomorrow, we’ll celebrate along Avalon Blvd. at the Wilmington Christmas Parade. From Winter Wonderlands to community parades, the holidays in the One-Five are truly my favorite time of year—sharing joy and cheer with all of you in our amazing communities. |

This week, in the Trade, Travel and Tourism Committee, we continued our efforts to usher in the shut down of the Rancho LPG storage facility in San Pedro, a site I believe poses unacceptable risks to our community. Despite Fire Department testimony that the facility complies with safety regulations, I remain deeply concerned about its age, proximity to homes and schools, and potential for catastrophic incidents. Built in 1973, the facility is simply incompatible with the surrounding residential and recreational uses.
My goal is clear, to explore every lawful avenue to close this facility and repurpose the land for safer, more compatible uses. I’ve introduced motions calling for a detailed cost and timeline study for winding down the Rancho LPG use, and I will continue pressing for answers. |

HARBOR COMMISSION NOMINATION |

Following an overwhelming approval of Measure HH by our city voters, I am thrilled to see the Mayor nominate Wilmington resident Yolanda DeLaTorre to serve on the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners. Measure HH was a resounding call by voters for community-focused input at the Port of Los Angeles where now we will have one San Pedro representative and one Wilmington representative.
I am certain that Yolanda DeLaTorre will bring her extensive community experience and commitment to ensure that the Port prioritizes environmental sustainability, economic growth, and crucial engagement with our Harbor Area communities. I look forward to working alongside Mayor Bass and the Board of Harbor Commissioners to move this appointment along through the City Council process so Wilmington can have the representation it rightly deserves. |

WILMINGTON MUNICIPAL BUILDING: TEMPORARILY CLOSED |

Starting Monday, December 9th, the Wilmington Municipal Office located at 544 N. Avalon Blvd., Wilmington, CA 90744, will be temporarily closed for plumbing repairs. The closure is expected to last through Friday, December 13th. During this time, our team will remain available to assist you. This week, we held our 5th and final Expungement Clinic of 2024 in the district. Over the past year, these clinics have provided critical services to our community, including record expungement, employment assistance, and wrap-around resources. In partnership with TimeDone, the Public Defender’s Office, our WorkSource Centers, and others, we’ve helped countless residents take meaningful steps toward brighter futures. Additionally, we distributed 180 food bags in collaboration with the Labor Community Agency to further support participants and their families! |

On Thursday, our office partnered with the Labor Community Agency and the Los Angeles Federation of Labor to host a food distribution event at Harbor City Park. Together, we were able to distribute 180 food bags to local residents thanks to the support from the Harbor City Food Pantry and the Neighborhood Council. We are proud to have joined the community in providing nutritious food to families and supporting our neighbors through this important initiative. |

The 4th Annual Christmas Tree Giveaway will take place on December 14 at 1034 W. 252nd St. at 11:30 AM! Hosted by the Harbor City Food Pantry and made possible by a Neighborhood Purpose Grant from the Harbor City Neighborhood Council, the event will provide trees to local families, ensuring everyone can celebrate the holiday season. One tree per car will be distributed while supplies last. |

CALTRANS TO HOLD SECOND VTB PUBLIC HEARING |

The California Department of Transportation will host its second in-person Traffic Management Plan Task Force meeting for the Vincent Thomas Bridge (VTB) Deck Replacement project. The meeting will take place at the Anderson Memorial Senior Citizen Center on Tuesday, December 12th from 6-8 PM. The task force aims to gather input from the public, stakeholders, and motorists to develop detour plans for the upcoming full bridge closure during construction. |

On Thursday, I toured Sunken City with Recreation and Parks General Manager Jimmy Kim. During our visit, I shared my vision of opening the gates to allow free access, restoring the area to its natural habitat, and reducing the temptation to trespass and pollute the environment. |

Last Saturday, we had the opportunity to attend the Community Extravaganza event at the newly completed football field at Nickerson Gardens. The event featured a combination of family activities, including yoga, sound baths, and a football camp held with the LA Rams. Kids participated in a flag football game, and children from across Watts even had the chance to meet the new Chief of Police, Jim McDonnell. |

The Pharaohs Car Club hosted a Holiday Market on Saturday to collect toys for their annual toy distribution. Esta semana, en el Comité de Comercio, Viajes y Turismo, continuamos nuestros esfuerzos para cerrar la instalación de almacenamiento Rancho LPG en San Pedro, un sitio que considero representa riesgos inaceptables para nuestra comunidad. A pesar del testimonio del Departamento de Bomberos de que la instalación cumple con las regulaciones de seguridad, sigo profundamente preocupado por su antigüedad, proximidad a hogares y escuelas, y el potencial de incidentes catastróficos. Construida en 1973, esta instalación es simplemente incompatible con los usos residenciales y recreativos circundantes.
Mi objetivo es claro: explorar todas las vías legales para cerrar esta instalación y reutilizar el terreno para usos más seguros y compatibles. He presentado mociones para solicitar un estudio detallado de costos y cronogramas para desmantelar el uso de Rancho LPG, y seguiré presionando para obtener respuestas. |

Tras la abrumadora aprobación de la Medida HH por parte de los votantes de nuestra ciudad, me entusiasma ver a la Alcaldesa nominar a Yolanda DeLaTorre, residente de Wilmington, para servir en la Junta de Comisionados del Puerto de Los Ángeles. La Medida HH fue un llamado claro por parte de los votantes para obtener aportes enfocados en la comunidad en el Puerto de Los Ángeles, donde ahora tendremos un representante de San Pedro y uno de Wilmington.
Estoy seguro de que Yolanda DeLaTorre aportará su amplia experiencia comunitaria y compromiso para garantizar que el Puerto priorice la sostenibilidad ambiental, el crecimiento económico y el compromiso crucial con nuestras comunidades del área portuaria. Espero trabajar junto a la Alcaldesa Bass y la Junta de Comisionados del Puerto para avanzar en esta nominación a través del proceso del Consejo Municipal y asegurar que Wilmington tenga la representación que merece. |

El Departamento de Transporte de California llevará a cabo su segunda reunión presencial del Grupo de Trabajo del Plan de Gestión del Tráfico para el proyecto de reemplazo del puente Vincent Thomas (VTB). La reunión se realizará en el Centro de Ciudadanos Mayores Anderson Memorial el martes 12 de diciembre, de 6 a 8 PM. El grupo de trabajo busca recopilar opiniones del público, las partes interesadas y los automovilistas para desarrollar planes de desvío ante el próximo cierre total del puente durante la construcción. |

El sábado pasado, tuvimos la oportunidad de asistir al evento Extravaganza Comunitaria en el recién inaugurado campo de fútbol americano en Nickerson Gardens. El evento incluyó una combinación de actividades familiares como yoga, baños de sonido y un campamento de fútbol con los LA Rams.
