Yesterday marked the conclusion of another impactful legislative year at the Los Angeles City Council—and with it, the anniversary of my second year as Councilmember of the One-Five. For as long as I can remember, it has been a dream of mine to serve as your Councilmember, and this role has been an incredible privilege. To have the opportunity, and responsibility, of representing communities from Watts to the Waterfront is both humbling and the greatest honor of my career. |

On Thursday morning, Connie and I had the privilege of attending Las Mañanitas on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wilmington. This cherished tradition began two years ago for us on my very first day in office and has become an annual reminder of how quickly time flies.
As we turn the page and begin year three, I am ready and energized for the work ahead. From tackling the challenges we face to building on the progress we’ve made, I look forward to collaborating with all of you to create a stronger, more united One-Five. Together, we’ll continue working tirelessly to ensure that every community in our district has the resources and opportunities it deserves.

On Tuesday the City Council approved new land use regulations to implement the goals of our 2021-2029 Housing Element including the Citywide Housing Incentive Program (CHIP), which updates density bonus programs and incentivizes affordable and mixed-income housing. These reforms are crucial for addressing Los Angeles’ housing crisis by facilitating the creation of affordable housing, protecting renters, and promoting equitable development. From here the City Attorney will work on the ordinances which will return to Council for a final vote to be adopted by mid-February. |

HIGHLIGHTING PUBLIC SAFETY EFFORTS WITH MAYOR BASS |

On Tuesday at the WLCAC, I joined Mayor Karen Bass, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley, and community leaders, including Tim Watkins and Watts Gang Task Force President Donny Joubert, to highlight the vital connection between public safety and community well-being. Together with the Council and the Mayor, we have supported police hiring, invested in peace ambassadors, and promoted community-driven safety initiatives. These efforts reflect our shared belief that we must keep the public in public safety. |

Caltrans continues to work on the Western Avenue project in San Pedro and we have received an update from State officials that completion of the work is anticipated in January. The final two sections are expected to be striped back to their original configuration within the next couple of days. In January, bike lanes will be added, but the number of car lanes will not be reduced, and electrical work will be finalized.
We understand the community's frustration regarding the lack of transparency and timely updates from Caltrans on this project. Our office has been the primary source of information, striving to keep residents informed despite limited communication from the responsible entities. We share your disappointment and will continue to advocate for more consistent and clear updates as the project progresses. Thank you for your patience and understanding. |

Caltrans recently re-striped the crosswalk at 262nd St. and Western Ave. to enhance pedestrian safety. This routine maintenance effort improves visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. NEW FENCING ON WESTERN AVE. |

Caltrans has recently completed the installation of the long-awaited new fence that was damaged several years ago on Western Ave. at 242nd Pl. Initially, when plans for the replacement fence emerged, we discovered that it was going to be made of chain link, which was unacceptable as it didn't match the existing material. After voicing our concerns and advocating for the original design, we are pleased to report that Caltrans has now installed the correct material, preserving the aesthetic and integrity of the area. |

On Saturday evening, we gathered at the Port of LA Towne Square for the second event in our Winter Wonderland series! We celebrated the holidays on the waterfront with a holiday market, arts & crafts, snow sledding, carolers, and the tree lighting. It was the perfect way to kick off the evening before the 63rd Annual LA Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade in the Port’s Main Channel. A special thanks to the Port of LA, Waterfront Arts District, San Pedro PBID, and West Harbor for making this event such a memorable evening! |

I had the pleasure of joining the YWCA and Toberman for their Breakfasts with Santa events. Each gathering hosted families enrolled in their programs. Children enjoyed breakfast, arts and crafts, and received free toys and books from Santa himself! At the YWCA event, I presented a certificate to Girl Scout Troop 70333, commending them for their incredible service to the community by adopting the YWCA and donating over 400 toys. |

We celebrated the 3rd Winter Wonderland of 2024 yesterday evening at the Watts Civic Center on 103rd St.! Residents enjoyed snow sledding, an incredible DJ, performances by the Sisters of Watts’ youth, and a tree lighting ceremony. A thank you to all participating organizations and our wonderful community for making this event possible. |

KEYS TO THE DISTRICT AT TDE XMAS |

On Thursday, I had the honor of presenting Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith with the Keys to the District at the 11th Annual TDE Christmas Concert and Toy Drive, celebrating his unwavering dedication to uplifting the community he grew up in. For over a decade, the TDE Christmas Concert and Toy Drive has been a hallmark of the holiday season in Nickerson Gardens, featuring toy giveaways and live entertainment. This year’s concert was one of the best yet, with an incredible lineup that included Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and other TDE artists. Alongside Top Dawg, I was also proud to recognize Donny Joubert and Hank Henderson of the Watts Gang Task Force for their outstanding leadership in fostering peace and safety in Watts. |

Connie and I had the honor of riding in the CSP Santa Sleigh at the 59th Annual Christmas Watts Willowbrook Parade on Saturday. After a two-year hiatus, this beloved tradition returned, thanks to the efforts of Wattskanda and community leaders. The parade brought joy and cheer down Central Avenue, ending with festivities at the Watts Civic Center. It was wonderful to see so many neighbors celebrating the holiday spirit together! |

On Sunday, Connie and I joined the 37th Annual Heart of the Harbor Holiday Parade in Wilmington as we traveled down Avalon Boulevard, ending at Banning Park. Year after year, this parade is a tremendous success, and seeing our streets filled with the Wilmington community celebrating together is a true joy. Thank you to the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce—Monica, Gaby, and the Heart of the Harbor Holiday Parade Committee—for bringing us together for the holidays. |

El martes, el Concejo Municipal aprobó nuevas regulaciones de uso de terreno para implementar los objetivos de nuestro Elemento de Vivienda 2021-2029, incluido el Programa de Incentivos de Vivienda para toda la ciudad (CHIP), que actualiza los programas de bonificación de densidad e incentiva viviendas asequibles y de ingresos mixtos. Durante más de una década, El concierto de Navidad y colecta de juguetes de TDE ha sido un sello distintivo de la temporada navideña en Nickerson Gardens, con obsequios de juguetes y entretenimiento en vivo. El concierto de este año fue uno de los mejores hasta ahora, con un cartel increíble que incluía a Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q y otros artistas de TDE.
