Yesterday, I had the opportunity to tour the Palisades with Councilmember Traci Park and other Councilmembers, where we witnessed the devastation caused by the fires and met with the brave first responders who continue to protect lives and property. We visited Fire Station 69 in the Palisades to thank these heroes and drop off much-needed supplies to support their efforts.

Back home in the One-Five, our community has once again demonstrated our extraordinary spirit of generosity and resilience. Over the past week, I’ve had the honor of witnessing countless acts of kindness as our neighbors stepped up to support those impacted by the devastating fires across Los Angeles. From Watts to the Waterfront, community members have come together to organize donation drives, deliver essential supplies, and provide a helping hand to those in need. Groups like the Sisters of Watts, John Jones and the East Side Riders Bike Club, volunteers at Crafted at the Port of LA, Pedro2Palisades at Port Town Brewery, and the ILWU have led incredible efforts to collect and distribute critical resources for displaced families and first responders. I am deeply inspired by the selflessness and determination of our residents.

Our council office team has matched this energy, stepping up to assist with fire recovery efforts across the city. From transporting truckloads of essential supplies to delivering pallets of pet products, our team has worked tirelessly to support the response. In partnership with organizations like Pedro Pet Pals, the YMCA, Rotary Club members, and local businesses, we’ve ensured that vital items like water, food, diapers, and pet supplies reach those who need them most.

Legislatively, this week I collaborated with my colleague Councilmember Park, to advance several critical motions. These include establishing a comprehensive recovery plan to address FEMA reimbursements, public safety in evacuation areas, and relief for displaced workers. We've also prioritized hiring additional staff to expedite fire recovery and rebuilding efforts while ensuring protections against price gouging and resource hoarding are strengthened. Additionally, our office has facilitated the donation and distribution of surplus N95 masks to nonprofits and community organizations, helping protect Angelenos from poor air quality caused by the fires.

The road to recovery is long, but I am confident that by working together, within the One-Five and across the city, that we will overcome these challenges together.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously confirmed Mayor Bass’s appointment of Yolanda DeLaTorre to the LA Board of Harbor Commissioners. Following the voters’ passage of Measure HH in November, this marks the first time that our City Charter will ensure both Wilmington and San Pedro have representation on the Board. As an active and dedicated Wilmington advocate, Commissioner DeLaTorre brings invaluable experience and will provide the representation residents deserve. I look forward to working with Commissioner DeLaTorre to address the challenges and opportunities facing the Port of Los Angeles and our communities.

ILWU LOCAL 56 BLOOD DRIVE

This week I stopped by ILWU Local 56's Blood Donation Drive in partnership with LifeStream Blood Bank. Thank you to the members from ILWU Local 13, 94, OCU63, 20, and 56, along with many others from the community who stepped up to donate blood. While the drive was planned well before the recent fires, the urgent need to save lives inspired a remarkable turnout.

ILWU WILDFIRE RELIEF DRIVE

Grateful for the generosity of the ILWU Locals during their Southern California Wildfire Relief Drive. Over the past few days, the ILWU has stepped up to collect donations, providing essential items to those in need. Guided by the principle that “An injury to one is an injury to all,” the ILWU continues to demonstrate the power of solidarity and the importance of extending support to those in need.

HARBOR CITY NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

On Wednesday evening, I attended the Harbor City Neighborhood Council Board Meeting to provide updates on fires and resources in the Harbor area. I shared details from the Palisades Fire and reported on recent fire incidents, including 66 rubbish fires and 14 brush fires, with 370 total responses in Battalion 6 from January 7-14. I also highlighted enhanced efforts from Park Rangers, including redeployment and proactive brush control measures at key locations like Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park.

PARK RANGERS AT KEN MALLOY

In response to our requests for a greater assurance of public safety, as of this past week, LA Park Rangers have been deployed full-time at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park. In addition, a dedicated brush patrol has also been in place to monitor potential fire risks and provide proactive fire suppression at Malloy and throughout the area.

STREET LIGHTING REPAIR

Recently 12 streetlights along Western Ave. and 248th St. were successfully repaired after a conduit was accidentally damaged during trenching work. Once the matter was reported to our office, we reached out to Street Lighting and they promptly resolved the issue.

VENICE FAMILY CLINIC FOOD DISTRIBUTION

This week, the Venice Family Clinic on Gardena Boulevard hosted its bi-weekly food distribution, providing fresh produce and goods to the community. If you would like to attend the next distribution, they are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 8:30 to 10:30 AM.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL REPAIRS

The traffic lights at 135th and Figueroa St. were malfunctioning but were quickly repaired by crews from the Department of Transportation. If you notice traffic signals malfunctioning, please call the LADOT Emergency Maintenance line at 213-485-4184, and a crew will be dispatched to address the issue.

ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEAN UP

Thank you to the Bureau of Sanitation for promptly cleaning up this illegal dump at Figueroa and 130th St. within a day. Our office is working with the business community and LAPD to monitor these areas and prevent haulers from using our streets as dumpsites. Requests for illegal dumping or bulky item pick-ups can also be made through the MYLA311 app.

WESTERN AVE. BICYCLE LANE UPDATE

Caltrans has begun work to install bicycle lanes along Western Ave. from Palos Verdes Dr. North to 25th St. in both directions. They will also install thermoplastic stripes at the intersections of Weymouth Pl., 1st St., and Westmont Dr. along Western Ave. Striping will take place from Sunday, January 19, to Friday, January 24, between 10 PM and 6 AM. As part of this work, Caltrans will be closing the right traffic lanes while striping the bike lanes.

WHITE POINT PRESERVE MEETING

On Tuesday, I attended the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy’s White Point Preserve community meeting, held at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Approximately 85 people attended to receive updates on the fires that occurred in December and early January at the Nature Preserve. The Fire Department is currently conducting an arson investigation and we plan to hold a follow-up meeting in 30 days.

SAN PEDRO COMMUNITY GARDEN TOUR

Yesterday, I toured the San Pedro Community Garden with representatives from LA Sanitation and the Los Angeles Community Garden Council. We discussed composting initiatives at the garden, a potential reconfiguration to improve accessibility, and strategies for creating a more sustainable future for the community gardens.

EMPTY LOT CLEARANCE

Thank you to the LAFD for their quick work in extinguishing the flames from a fire that broke out on an empty lot in Watts at S. Central Ave. between E. Lanzit Ave. and E. 112th St. last weekend. On Tuesday, our Clean 15 team and LASAN swiftly removed debris and bulky items to prevent future fires. Keeping our communities clean is especially important during this challenging time of high winds and fires across the county.

NICKERSON GARDENS VIGIL

The Watts Gang Task Force, HACLA’s Nickerson Gardens community, and our office participated in a candlelight vigil to honor the lives and homes lost in the recent fires on Monday. This gathering served as a gesture of solidarity and support for affected families and paid tribute to the family of William Nickerson Jr., celebrating his enduring contributions to the community. We also honored Rodney Nickerson, the grandson of the late William Nickerson Jr., who passed away at 82 years old as a victim of the Eaton Fire. The fire spread through the Altadena neighborhood, where Rodney had lived for more than 50 years. This vigil was a reminder that Watts stands in solidarity with Angelenos affected by such tragedies, offering our heartfelt support to those in need.

RESTRIPING INTERSECTIONS

This week, the Bureau of Street Services completed restriping work at several intersections in Watts. Pedestrian safety has been a recurring topic raised at multiple community meetings, and we’re grateful to see progress at key intersections, including Central Ave. and Imperial Hwy., E. 103rd St. and Central Ave., as well as Compton Ave. and 103rd St. Additional improvements are planned for the community, addressing ongoing concerns about safety and accessibility.

LA CARE SOCIAL HOUR AT WCRC

This week, we joined residents for the monthly social hour hosted by Wilmington Community Resource Center. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with neighbors and learn about the various resources and classes available to the community. BENEFITS OF WALKING

On Wednesday, LAWalks and Best Start Wilmington joined parents at Hawaiian Ave. Elementary to educate the community about the benefits of walking. They emphasized that walking not only improves personal health but also reduces pollution. This event encouraged residents to embrace walking as a sustainable and healthy way to navigate their community.

ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEAN UP

This week, we conducted an illegal dumping cleanup on the 1600 block of Opp St. Residents are encouraged to report any instances of illegal dumping through MyLA311 or by contacting our field office for assistance.

El miércoles, el Concejo Municipal de Los Ángeles confirmó por unanimidad el nombramiento de Yolanda DeLaTorre al Consejo de Comisionados del Puerto de Los Ángeles por parte de la Alcaldesa Bass. Tras la aprobación de los votantes de la Medida HH en noviembre, esta es la primera vez que nuestra Carta Municipal garantiza representación tanto para Wilmington como para San Pedro en la Junta. CONSEJO VECINAL DE HARBOR CITY

DISTRIBUCIÓN DE ALIMENTOS DE LA CLÍNICA FAMILIAR DE VENICE

Caltrans ha comenzado los trabajos para instalar carriles para bicicletas en ambas direcciones de Western Ave., desde Palos Verdes Dr. North hasta la calle 25. También se instalarán franjas termoplásticas en las intersecciones de Weymouth Pl., 1st St. y Westmont Dr. a lo largo de la Avenida Western. REUNIÓN SOBRE WHITE POINT PRESERVE

LIMPIEZA DE TERRENOS VACÍOS

Gracias al Departamento de Bomberos de Los Ángeles (LAFD) por su rápida acción al extinguir las llamas de un incendio que estalló el fin de semana pasado en un terreno vacío en Watts, ubicado en Avenida S. Central. Entre la Avenida E. Lanzit. y la calle E. 112th. El martes, nuestro equipo Clean 15 y LASAN retiraron rápidamente escombros y artículos voluminosos para prevenir futuros incendios. Mantener nuestras comunidades limpias es especialmente importante durante este momento crítico de fuertes vientos e incendios en todo el condado.

VIGILIA EN NICKERSON GARDENS

La Fuerza de Tarea de Pandillas de Watts, la comunidad de Nickerson Gardens de HACLA y nuestra oficina participaron en una vigilia con velas para honrar las vidas y hogares perdidos en los recientes incendios el lunes.
