As wildfires and high winds continue to impact multiple parts of Los Angeles City and County, my heart breaks for those who have lost their loved ones, their homes, livelihoods, and communities. We, in the One-Five, have been blessed to have avoided wildfires in our district, and I want to assure you that I’ve been in constant communication with our fire and police leadership to monitor potential areas of concern. While our district is not directly affected by the fires, we are indirectly impacted as some of our resources have been redeployed to assist in fighting the fires — appropriately so. However, no part of our district is without fire or police resources, even though we are stretched thin.
StreetsLA remains in emergency response mode, prioritizing fire and wind-related incidents, with all divisions, including Urban Forestry, Street Maintenance, and Street Renewal, focused on addressing tree emergencies and related issues. Normal operations like resurfacing are paused, and residents are encouraged to report service needs via MyLA311 for efficient assistance.
Health and Safety Precautions At this time, it’s especially important for everyone to be cautious and mindful of their health: Stay indoors as much as possible, especially if you have respiratory issues. Keep pets inside to protect them from smoke and poor air quality. Close your windows and use air purifiers if you have them. Avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in affected areas. Remain vigilant to prevent fire risks locally. Observe your surroundings, and report concerns to authorities.
Additionally, I urge everyone to conserve water wherever possible, as every drop is critical to firefighting efforts.
Supporting Emergency Efforts My prayers are with all the residents impacted by these fires and the first responders working tirelessly to protect life and property. We’ve received inquiries from individuals, businesses, and organizations eager to assist those affected. We have compiled a list of organizations to donate to and volunteer with. I'm also incredibly proud of our One-Five local organizations for stepping up to support our neighbors north of us in collecting food, pet supplies, and dropping off food boxes for those in need. |

These fires have highlighted the need to build and maintain a well-staffed and well-equipped LA Fire Department. During last year’s budget deliberations, I worked with the Council to amend the Mayor's Proposed Budget to allocate additional funding and restore some positions in the Fire Department. These included a Sheet Metal Worker, and resolution authorities for four additional positions: two Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics, one Senior Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic, and one Welder. That crew was to address the need to keep our trucks and engines in service. I also worked to secure nearly $1.3 million to establish a paid Wildland Fuel Management Hand Crew Program. This initiative aims to reduce wildfire risks by employing trained crews to clear brush, manage vegetation, and maintain critical firebreaks in vulnerable areas.
However, when LAFD Chief Crowley tells us that we need to do more, she is absolutely right. This week she expressed the need for more equipment and additional firefighters. To answer this call, we must adjust our funding and Fire Department spending to focus on the challenges of preventing and fighting the fires in these 21st century conditions of a hotter, drier Los Angeles.
As the son, brother, father, and uncle of firefighters, I have always stood—and will continue to stand—by the side of first responders. I will work with my colleagues to secure the proper funding they need to protect our city. |

Our Clean 15 Teams working with the Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD) had to pause their activity due to the air quality this week but prior to that we were able to address illegal dumping in Watts and Wilmington.

On Sunday we celebrated my favorite holiday - One-Five Day! For the second year on January 5th (1/5) we celebrated One-Five Day, and this year we did something truly special: bringing people together from across the district to share a meal and coffee. |

We started the day at the Omelette & Waffle Shop in San Pedro, where we had an engaging discussion on public safety with Donny Joubert, President of the Watts Gang Task Force; Melanie Labreque, Public Safety Chair of the Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council; and LAPD Harbor Division Captain Brent McGuyre. |

Next, we visited The Nook at the beautiful Enclave in Harbor Gateway, where I was honored to meet with Elise Swanson of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce and David Matthews of the Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce. We discussed ways to support local businesses, how my office can assist, and more. |

In Wilmington, I joined Adela Retana, the dedicated principal of Banning High School, and Lou Mardesich, Regional Director for the San Pedro Community of Schools, at Pan y Leche Bakery & Cafe. We had a valuable conversation on how we can work with schools to create pathways to success for the youth of the One-Five. |

I also had lunch at La Española Meats in Harbor City with Tricia Tucker, founder of the Harbor City Food Pantry, and Pastor John Hernandez, President and Senior Pastor of New Challenge Ministries. We discussed how they have adapted to meet the community’s evolving needs, combat food insecurity, and support those in need. |

For our final stop, we visited Watts, where I was joined by Rick Cruz of Avalon Arts and Cultural Alliance in Wilmington and Amy Eriksen, Executive Director of Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro. We discussed how to support the arts and engage local artists while enjoying sandwiches from El Torito Market at the iconic Watts Towers. El Torito Market, part of our Healthy Neighborhood Market Network, is committed to inclusivity and offers fresh produce, groceries, and a meat and deli counter.

Nine Canary Island Pine trees were trimmed, and two stumps were ground down on Monday along Kippen St., between 237th St. and President Ave. Due to the specific characteristics of this tree species, it was advisable not to trim them during the summer months. Therefore, the trimming of any remaining trees of this species will continue during the cooler months. |

New ADA-compliant curbs are currently being installed near President Elementary and Narbonne High School on 243rd St. at President Ave. to improve accessibility for students, staff, and visitors. 110 BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT |

Caltrans is preparing for an upcoming beautification project along the 110 Freeway, focusing on the intersections at the 105/110 and 91/110. The project includes installing more durable fencing, planting drought-resistant vegetation, and paving certain areas to help reduce illegal dumping. A community meeting with additional information is planned for February. Please look out for notices from our office. |

COMMUNITY MEETING AT THE GRAND ANNEX |

Over 130 residents gathered at the Grand Annex on Monday for a focused town hall addressing a series of suspicious fires in the White Point Nature Preserve. We were able to report that an arson investigation has been opened by LAFD following numerous fires since December, which have destroyed outhouses, burned dry brush, and threatened animal habitats. Also in response, LAPD has increased patrols by ground and air, while wildlife cameras have been repositioned to monitor suspicious activity. Surveillance along the waterfront is also being reviewed to identify any patterns or culprits. Residents are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious activity or concerns to the appropriate enforcement agencies. |

NEW YEARS EVE RINGING OF THE BELL |

On New Year's Eve, friends and neighbors gathered at the Korean Friendship Bell to ring in the New Year - continuing a time honored tradition begun by the legendary John Olguín, dating back to 1976. This was my third year as Councilmember participating in this lovely event at Angels Gate Park, and it remains one of my favorite ways to start the year—with community. May this year bring peace, unity, and joy for us all. |

Saturday was the inaugural Watts Showcase, a celebration of youth football, unity, talent, and community pride! The 10U and 11U teams from the Watts Dolphins and Watts Rams faced off in exciting matchups, with the Dolphins taking the 10U game and the Rams claiming victory in the 11U game. This event was more than just competition, it was an opportunity to highlight the incredible young athletes of Watts. Boys and girls showcased their talent, with the MVP awards for the 10U game going to the standout girls on each team. Held at Jordan High School, the day showed the power of community and the bright future of our kids. |

STREET LIGHTING REPAIRS ALONG CENTRAL |

This work is a direct response to requests from the Watts Neighborhood Council regarding lighting concerns near 112th St. Elementary and Verbum Dei High School. The Department of Public Works has successfully completed the installation of traffic signal lights at the intersection of Anaheim St. and Bay View Ave. This project has been finalized, and the traffic signals are now fully operational. The new signals are expected to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians in the area. Estos incendios han resaltado la necesidad de contar con un Departamento de Bomberos de Los Ángeles bien equipado y con suficiente personal. Durante las deliberaciones presupuestarias del año pasado, trabajé con el Concejo para enmendar el Presupuesto Propuesto por el Alcalde y asignar fondos adicionales para restaurar algunos puestos en el Departamento de Bomberos. Esto incluyó la incorporación de un Trabajador de Lámina Metálica y la creación de cuatro puestos adicionales: dos Mecánicos de Equipos Pesados, un Mecánico Senior de Equipos Pesados y un Soldador. Este equipo se destinó a mantener nuestros camiones y motores en funcionamiento. Además, logré asegurar casi $1.3 millones para establecer un Programa Remunerado de Manejo de Combustible en Áreas Silvestres. Esta iniciativa tiene como objetivo reducir los riesgos de incendios forestales empleando equipos capacitados para limpiar maleza, manejar vegetación y mantener cortafuegos críticos en áreas vulnerables.
Sin embargo, cuando la Jefa del Departamento de Bomberos, Kristin Crowley, nos dice que necesitamos hacer más, tiene toda la razón. Esta semana, ella expresó la necesidad de contar con más equipo y bomberos adicionales. REUNIÓN COMUNITARIA EN EL GRAND ANNEX |

Más de 130 residentes se reunieron el lunes en el Grand Annex para un foro comunitario enfocado en una serie de incendios sospechosos en la Reserva Natural de White Point. Informamos que el Departamento de Bomberos de Los Ángeles (LAFD) ha iniciado una investigación por incendio provocado tras numerosos incidentes desde diciembre, que han destruido instalaciones, quemado matorrales secos y amenazado los hábitats de animales. En respuesta, el Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles (LAPD) ha incrementado las patrullas terrestres, aéreas y en vehículos todoterreno, mientras que las cámaras de vida silvestre han sido reubicadas para monitorear actividades sospechosas. En la víspera de Año Nuevo, amigos y vecinos se reunieron en la Campana de la Amistad Coreana para dar la bienvenida al Año Nuevo, continuando una tradición honrada en el tiempo que comenzó el legendario John Olguín en 1976. Este fue mi tercer año como concejal participando en este hermoso evento en el Parque Angels Gate, y sigue siendo una de mis formas favoritas de comenzar el año: con la comunidad. Que este año nos traiga paz, unidad y alegría a todos. |

El sábado se llevó a cabo la inauguración del Watts Showcase, ¡una celebración del fútbol juvenil, la unidad, el talento y el orgullo comunitario! Los equipos 10U y 11U de los Watts Dolphins y Watts Rams se enfrentaron en emocionantes encuentros, con los Dolphins ganando el partido 10U y los Rams llevándose la victoria en el juego 11U. Este evento fue más que una competencia; fue una oportunidad para destacar a los increíbles jóvenes atletas de Watts. Niños y niñas demostraron su talento, y los premios MVP del juego 10U fueron otorgados a las destacadas jugadoras de cada equipo. Realizado en la Escuela Secundaria Jordan, el día mostró el poder de la comunidad y el brillante futuro de nuestros niños. |

Gracias al Buró de Alumbrado Público por restaurar la iluminación a lo largo de Central Avenue, entre la calle E 112th y la avenida E Lanzit. En las próximas semanas, se restaurarán luces adicionales. Esto responde directamente a las solicitudes del Consejo Vecinal de Watts sobre las preocupaciones de iluminación cerca de la Escuela Primaria 112th St y la Escuela Secundaria Verbum Dei. En las próximas semanas, se restaurarán más luces. Sabemos que hay varias otras ubicaciones pendientes de reparación en la comunidad, pero el departamento está trabajando activamente en ellas. NUEVO SEMÁFORO DE TRÁFICO |

La Oficina de Obras Públicas ha completado con éxito la instalación de semáforos en la intersección de Anaheim St. y Bay View Ave. Este proyecto ya está finalizado, y las señales de tráfico están completamente operativas. Se espera que los nuevos semáforos mejoren el flujo vehicular y aumenten la seguridad tanto para los conductores como para los peatones en la zona. El pasado fin de semana, celebramos nuevamente el Día de Reyes en Wilmington, honrando la llegada de los Tres Reyes Magos. ¡Gracias a SBCC por organizar un evento tan maravilloso y a Black Knight Patrol por recibir a la comunidad en su espacio! Fue una gran celebración llena de música, juegos, juguetes para los niños y la tradicional Rosca de Reyes, ¡que se repartió a 100 familias! |
