During this time, we honor the rich legacy, contributions, and resilience of Black leaders and everyday heroes who have shaped both the One-Five and Los Angeles. From Watts to the Waterfront, our diversity is our strength, and this month is an opportunity to uplift those who have made a lasting impact.
In the One-Five, Black history is our district’s history. It is the legacy of those who fought for justice, built businesses and raised families that strengthen our neighborhoods, and created spaces for art, culture, and education to thrive.
This month, we will join celebrations that uplift advocates, present and past, who’ve inspired and are building a brighter future in the One-Five. It is a time not only to reflect but also to take action—creating an inclusive community by supporting Black-owned businesses, amplifying voices that advance equity, and ensuring that the next generation has every opportunity to succeed. |

Yesterday in Council, I introduced two motions aimed at strengthening Los Angeles’ fire response and prevention efforts. As our city’s fire station infrastructure ages, population patterns change, and we experience increasingly a hotter and drier Los Angeles, we must evaluate our needs, invest in the tools to fight fires, and develop new strategies to prevent them.
One of my motions calls for the LAFD to report on the City’s Standards of Cover (SOC) analysis, a report which measures the effectiveness of LAFD’s deployment model and offers steps for improvement. The motion calls for a plan to implement the SOC recommendations, including identification of funding sources for new or replacement fire stations, restoring services, and ensuring the LAFD has adequate resources to meet current fire suppression and emergency medical needs.
The second motion focuses on proactive wildfire mitigation through enhanced brush clearance. While the LAFD enforces brush clearance rules through an annual program, we must strengthen these efforts to reduce fire risk. This motion calls for a feasibility study on implementing a semi-annual brush clearance program for both public and private properties and a report on additional resources needed for consistent enforcement. By strengthening our firefighting resource deployment and improving vegetation management, we can better protect lives, homes, and infrastructure from the growing wildfire threats. |

Last week we celebrated the State of the Port 2025, where we heard from Port Executive Director Gene Seroka about the Port's growth, including cargo volumes, trade partnerships and environmental progress. The One-Five and the Port have shared a deep connection since its founding, and as the Port continues to grow, we must invest in jobs while protecting the environment and surrounding communities. This includes supporting clean energy initiatives and reducing emissions to benefit both Port neighbors and the environment. |

POLA'S LUNAR NEW YEAR FESTIVAL |

On Saturday, we celebrated the 11th Annual Lunar New Year at the Port of Los Angeles, marking the start of spring and the Year of the Snake. This special event at AltaSea this year showcased traditions, performances, and cultural displays from Chinese, South Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, and other Asian cultures, highlighting the importance of renewal, reunion, and optimism for the future. A heartfelt thank you to the Port of Los Angeles and everyone who made this incredible celebration possible! |

PORT OF LA COMMUNITY INVESTMENT GRANT PROGRAM |

The Port of Los Angeles is now accepting applications from nonprofit organizations for its Fiscal Year 2025/26 Community Investment Grant Program, offering funding for community-related events, programs, and projects that benefit the Los Angeles Harbor area. An informational workshop will be held virtually on February 19, and applications are due by 4 PM on March 24. Eligible initiatives must align with the Tidelands Public Trust and relate to maritime activities, ecological preservation, or waterfront recreation; application details are available on the Port’s website. |

Recently, trees on Kentworthy Ave., Batey Ave., and Oakheath Dr. in Harbor City were trimmed, thanks to the cooler weather. The Bureau of Street Services’ Urban Forestry Division took advantage of the mild conditions to maintain the trees, ensuring healthy growth and enhancing the streetscape. |

New "No Dumping" signs have been posted at both entrances of the alley between President Ave. and Western Ave. to address the recent increase in illegal dumping. These signs serve as a reminder for the community to dispose of waste properly. A special thanks to LA Sanitation for taking the initiative to install these signs and help keep the area clean. |

Drivers have been running a stop sign near the drop-off area at Normont Elementary School. Our office contacted South Traffic about the issue, and enforcement efforts were increased. Double parking remains a problem, and citations and warnings have been issued. Additionally, we reached out to LADOT to conduct a traffic study for a potential crosswalk installation at 252nd St. and Petroleum Ave. |

Justice For Murdered Children (JFMC) has opened a new office at 1722 S. Gaffey St., which will serve as a Resource and Wellness House. This space will provide a supportive environment for families impacted by murder, offering legal and educational resources as well as emotional support. JFMC's mission is to create safer neighborhoods by strengthening relationships between the community and law enforcement. |

On Thursday, I attended Coffee with the Principal at Compton Avenue STEAM Academy, where we discussed the City of LA’s Sanctuary City status and the importance of knowing your rights. Principal Murray and her staff also shared information about various services available through LAUSD, including mental health assistance for students and families. We appreciate Dr. Murray for her leadership at Compton Ave. and thank the parents who are actively involved in supporting both the school and our community. |

On Sunday morning, I toured the great work being done by Snip to Save LA and Pedro Pet Pals at the Wilmington YMCA through their low-cost spay/neuter program. This self-funded initiative provides accessible and affordable services for pet owners. Together, they’re creating a better future for our pets and our community who love our furry friends dearly. |

HARBOR CONNECTS COLLABORATIVE |

The Wilmington Collaborative, a coalition of service provider leaders and community members, works to address the challenges faced by our Wilmington residents. It works to solve community issues, break down silos, and foster greater collaboration. As part of its ongoing efforts, the collaborative hosts a monthly meeting in the Wilmington area that brings together local organizations and residents to tackle these challenges together. Ayer en el Consejo presenté dos mociones destinadas a fortalecer los esfuerzos de prevención y respuesta a incendios de Los Ángeles.
