This past Monday, I had the privilege of being the featured speaker at the LA Current Affairs Forum, where I shared priorities for the One-Five and gave an update on my efforts on policy and legislation in the City Council. I described my central focus, which is to ensure that every neighborhood in the One-Five is uplifted. This means prioritizing essential services while also making thoughtful decisions on large-scale policies that impact our community. My role is to fight for the One-Five and ensure that our budget and resources reflect the needs of our residents in Watts, Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, Wilmington, and San Pedro. |

I also highlighted the upcoming city budget, which will present significant challenges. We made critical investments in our workforce this past year, but our revenues are down. While we remain committed to our investments in our workforce, we must also make strategic choices to maintain services and address fiscal constraints. As a member of the Budget Committee, I will work to balance these realities while protecting the essential services our residents rely on.
I also discussed the recent devastating fires and the human and financial toll they have taken on our city. Coordination between city leadership, emergency agencies, and FEMA will be critical. My role and that of the City Council remain vital in ensuring oversight and accountability. I sit on the newly formed Ad Hoc Committee for LA Recovery, led by Councilmember Traci Park, taking the lead on policy decisions related to recovery and support for affected residents, workers and businesses. I will continue to advocate for clear, transparent processes to ensure that our communities receive the assistance they need.
In the end, our work in the city is about more than just policies and budgets—it is about standing with our neighbors in times of crisis and finding solutions together. Whether it's addressing the immediate challenges of fire recovery, strengthening our economic foundation, or improving our infrastructure, my commitment remains unwavering. Thank you for your continued engagement in making the One-Five a stronger, deeply connected community where everyone has the opportunity to uplift each other and thrive. |

On Wednesday, I introduced a motion to designate the last two remaining buildings of the Japanese American Village on Terminal Island as Historic-Cultural Monuments, recognizing their historical and cultural significance. These buildings, located on Tuna Street in San Pedro, are among the last physical reminders of a once-thriving Japanese American fishing community, whose residents were arrested, removed and interned during World War II. Before Executive Order 9066, Terminal Island was home to over 3,000 Japanese American residents, but the Terminal Island community, also known as East San Pedro, was the first in the nation to be forcibly displaced, with their homes, businesses, and community gathering places demolished. It’s important to recognize these last remaining buildings, to honor the contributions of Japanese Americans to our community, and ensure that future generations learn from this tragic history. The motion will come back to the Council on Wednesday for a full vote. From there, the city’s Planning Department will prepare an application for the designation, which, if approved, would protect the buildings from demolition or major alterations. |

The Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count is the annual point-in-time census that counts our neighbors experiencing unsheltered homelessness. The Count helps us direct resources and identify additional services needed to support our unhoused neighbors. The Count is coming up THIS THURSDAY in our communities on February 20! On Saturday we celebrated Girls and Women in Sports at the Harbor City Rec Center which highlighted the power of sports to build confidence, leadership, and success. Thanks to Rec & Parks for hosting such a great event—there were hands-on clinics for softball, basketball, volleyball, cheer/dance, and skateboarding, as well as truly inspiring talks from women in sports. The power of sports is boundless and empowers girls and women to break barriers and pursue their goals! |

Our office contacted the Department of Transportation regarding a faded stop sign at the intersection of 259th Pl. and President Ave. After bringing the issue to their attention, LADOT quickly replaced the sign to improve visibility and safety for drivers in the area. |

HOUSING SOLUTIONS AT 327 HARBOR APTS |

On Monday we broke ground on 327 Harbor Apartments, a new affordable housing community in San Pedro. 327 Harbor Apartments will provide 47 affordable homes for families earning 30% to 80% of the area median income. As the first off-site phase of “One San Pedro”, the Rancho San Pedro redevelopment, 327 Harbor Apartments lays the foundation for a vibrant, inclusive community with diverse housing, parks, retail, and improved mobility. This milestone advances much-needed housing solutions while prioritizing opportunity, equity, and sustainability. I am proud of our community’s support and grateful for our partners in making this vision a reality. |

Grateful for local groups that take it upon themselves to care for our community and keep it clean and beautiful. The San Pedro Arts Association celebrated the grand opening of their gallery space at Crafted. Over 50 local artists are represented at the new gallery, and all items are for sale. ROUND TABLE RIGHTS DISCUSSION |

On Tuesday, we participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by the Children’s Institute to discuss immigration rights amid ICE activity in Los Angeles and neighboring cities. In partnership with LAPD Community Safety Partnership and the Watts Gang Task Force, we discussed the city’s stance, LAPD’s involvement, and the opportunity to create strategies to prevent misinformation from spreading in the future. Deputy Chief Tingirides and her team shared important information and listened to the community’s concerns, especially regarding the impact on programs and resources. |

MAFUNDI SECOND INFORMATIONAL SESSION |

On February 27th, the City’s Bureau of Engineering and the consultant team responsible for the redevelopment of the Watts Happening Cultural Center (also known as the Mafundi Building) will hold a follow-up informational session. Community stakeholders will have the opportunity to discuss the building’s history and share input on plans for its future. This session will take place at MudTown Farms at 2001 E 103rd St. We hope to see you there! |

WATTS SKATE PARK RIBBON CUTTING |

The day has finally arrived! Join us on February 22nd for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Watts Skatepark on Wilmington Ave. and Imperial Hwy. The park will feature street skating, transition, vert sections, and bike-friendly access. The ribbon-cutting event will begin at 12 PM and will include a short program of speakers, followed by pro demos from skaters and bike riders. We look forward to seeing everyone there on the 22nd and to planning future events at the park! |

Este lunes pasado, tuve el privilegio de ser el orador principal en el Foro de Asuntos Actuales de Los Ángeles, donde compartí las prioridades para el One-Five y brindé una actualización sobre mis esfuerzos en materia de política y legislación en el Concejo Municipal. Expresé mi enfoque central: garantizar que cada vecindario en el One-Five sea elevado. Esto significa priorizar los servicios esenciales y tomar decisiones reflexivas sobre políticas a gran escala que impactan nuestra comunidad. Como miembro del Comité de Presupuesto, trabajaré para equilibrar estas realidades mientras protegemos los servicios esenciales de los que dependen nuestros residentes.
Además, abordé los recientes incendios devastadores y el impacto humano y financiero que han tenido en nuestra ciudad. La coordinación entre el liderazgo de la ciudad, las agencias de emergencia y FEMA será fundamental. Mi rol, al igual que el del Concejo Municipal, sigue siendo crucial para garantizar supervisión y rendición de cuentas. Formo parte del recién creado Comité Ad Hoc de Respuesta a Incendios, dirigido por la concejal Traci Park, asumiendo el liderazgo en decisiones políticas relacionadas con la recuperación y el apoyo a los residentes, trabajadores y negocios afectados. Estos edificios, ubicados en Tuna Street en San Pedro, son algunos de los últimos recordatorios físicos de una próspera comunidad pesquera japonesa americana cuyos residentes fueron arrestados, desalojados e internados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El martes, participamos en una mesa redonda organizada por el Children's Institute para discutir los derechos de inmigración en medio de la actividad de ICE en Los Ángeles y ciudades vecinas. En colaboración con la Asociación de Seguridad Comunitaria de LAPD y el Watts Gang Task Force, analizamos la postura de la ciudad, la participación de LAPD y la oportunidad de desarrollar estrategias para prevenir la propagación de desinformación en el futuro.
