This week I had the incredible opportunity to help assist over 60 families in Southern California affected by the wildfires that plagued Southern California early last month. I am extremely proud to have organizations like Shepherd Church, Frida Mexican Cuisine, Bearies Acai, and the Change Reaction lend their unwavering support to our neighbors in times of need - they truly exemplify the spirit of community.

The Change Reaction has long been a valuable partner to my office, helping countless individuals facing hardships, ensuring they don’t fall further into crisis. The ripple effect of this disaster will be felt for years to come. But, I have no doubt that as a City, we will continue this road of recovery and come out stronger, more resilient than ever.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

Legislation Seeking Injunctive Relief to Halt the Acceptance of Hazardous Debris at the Sunshine Canyon Landfill
I introduced a motion requesting the City Attorney to seek injunctive relief through a temporary restraining order against Republic Services and Browning-Ferris Industries for the acceptance of the hazardous soil.

Improving Enforcement Mechanism of Against Unauthorized Cannabis Shops

I introduced a motion today that requests the City Attorney to assess and report on recommendations to improve the enforcement mechanisms of unauthorized cannabis shops with the goal of preventing them from resuming operations after having been closed down.

Neighborhood Councils Elections

88 of Los Angeles’ 99 Neighborhood Councils are having elections this season, including Granada Hills North NC, Granada Hills South NC, Northridge East NC, Northridge West NC, North Hills West NC, Porter Ranch NC, and West Hills NC. All Neighborhood Council elections will be vote by mail and held on different dates through June 2025.

Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count New Dates

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority has announced the 2025 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count will take place February 18 - 20. The Annual Homeless Count is a countywide event that brings thousands of Angelenos together to count persons experiencing homelessness as required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Relief Grants Available for Small Businesses & Workers Impacted by Wildfires

To aid in the financial recovery of small businesses and displaced workers affected by the wildfires, the City of LA, in collaboration with LA County DEO, have launched the LA Region Small Business and Worker Relief Funds. Through these funds, eligible small businesses and nonprofits can receive up to $25K in grants. Eligible displaced workers can obtain $2K in cash assistance.

Grant applications are now open and will close February 24, 2025 at 5:00 PM. Impacted small business owners and workers residing in the City of LA can receive application assistance through the WorkSource and BusinessSource Centers.

Philanthropic contributions are also being accepted towards the relief effort. To contribute funds, visit lacounty.gov/relief.

LA Youth Count New Dates

The LA Youth Count has received new dates and will now be held February 19 - 28. The LA Youth Count is looking for volunteers to help count unsheltered youth in LA County. A successful youth count gets us closer to ending Youth Homelessness in LA. The count depends on our participation. Data from the count informs services and program funding.
