October 13, 2023

The continuing violence occurring in Israel is something that is truly disheartening and is echoing loudly throughout our city and country. Earlier this week, I joined my colleagues at a press conference in a show of solidarity with the Jewish community both here and abroad.

As home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the world, and as a sister city to Eilat in Israel, the City of Los Angeles mourns with the friends and families who have lost and continue losing loved ones during this period of violence. Israel is one of our country’s unwavering partners and during these difficult times, we need to use our voices to show that the partnership goes both ways and our commitment too, is unwavering.

I unequivocally stand with the Jewish community here in Los Angeles and with the people of Israel in condemning last week’s terrorist attack. There is no justification for attacks of terror and there is nothing to be gained from taking the lives of innocent civilians. I pray for an end to the conflict and hope for a future that brings real solutions to an issue that has gone on for far too long.

CD12 COMMUNITY UPDATES

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Our Local Neighborhood Councils

Getting involved in your community can be very rewarding but you may not know where to start. In 2001, the City of Los Angeles approved the Plan For a Citywide System of Neighborhood Councils. The goals and objectives of the Neighborhood Council system include promoting public participation in city governance, facilitating the delivery of city services and city government response, and fostering a sense of community. Now in 2023, we have 99 Certified Neighborhood Councils, 9 of them being in Council District 12.

The West Hills Neighborhood Council covers all of West Hills and has created fun events for all from a Senior Valentine Dinner Dance to Haunted Houses on Display competition. They also have an engaging membership that aids the process for art on utility boxes.

The Chatsworth Neighborhood Council covers all of Chatsworth (which is also one of the city's boundaries) and has a long body of work which includes replacing missing street signs, planting trees, preserving equine keeping rights, and putting on events like ‘Day of the Horse’.

The Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council covers all of Porter Ranch and has been an advocate for the community on the matter of the Aliso Canyon Gas Storage Facility. They continue working towards having additional brush clearance in the local parks.

Other communities, due to their size, are split up into multiple Neighborhood Councils.

The Granada Hills North Neighborhood Council covers the portion of Granada Hills that is north of the 118 freeway which is also home to O’Melveny Park, the second largest park in the city. The Granada Hills South Neighborhood Council encompasses all of Granada Hills below the 118 freeway and is known for being a great supporter of the various events that happen in their community like the Granada Hills Holiday Parade and the Petit Park’s Egg Hunt.

The entire section of North Hills with CD12 is represented by the North Hills West Neighborhood Council which covers the portion of North Hills that is west of the 405 freeway. They have provided neighborhood watch signs to the community and always find ways to support the Mid-Valley Regional Library.

Council District 12's largest neighborhood, Northridge, is divided into three councils.

The Northridge South Neighborhood Council encompasses the south side of Nordhoff onward to Council District 12’s southern boundary. This neighborhood council is credited with putting up the beloved street banner signs honoring veterans which you may have seen throughout their area.

The Northridge East Neighborhood Council is on the east side of Reseda and the north side of Nordhoff. Northridge East is home to CSUN and thus has at least two representatives from CSUN who contribute to conversations about the neighborhood in relation to the campus and student population.

The Northridge West Neighborhood Council is on the west side of Reseda and the north side of Nordhoff. Northridge West has been creative in its outreach efforts by having an ice cream social to bring the community together while educating them on City services.
