Please join us from 6 - 8 PM at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) in the Phoenix Hall for an update on all that we have been up to in the first 10 months! We will cover a sample of projects, policies, and initiatives we are pursuing in the district and city-wide.

Residents from throughout the 5 communities are invited to join us to hear updates, priorities, what we’ve been working on, and what is planned ahead. Light refreshments will be provided.

On Friday, President Biden and the U.S. Department of Energy announced a decision to award California up to $1.2 billion for a regional clean hydrogen hub with a significant portion going to the Ports of LA and Long Beach. We celebrated this funding with a press conference at the Port with Mayor Bass, the Port of LA, ILWU leadership, Harbor Commissioners and so many others.

I’m proud of the work that so many of us in the Harbor community have put into this effort - including community groups, labor, local business, and nonprofit organizations - alongside the government agencies. Together, we have been working on this for years and I’m pleased to see this day. Working with the Mayors and Ports of LA and Long Beach, this funding gives us a real opportunity to reach our goals to decarbonize the San Pedro Bay and clean the air of the surrounding communities.

CLEAN 15

Check out these Before and Afters of our Clean 15 Team’s work! This week we’re highlighting the team’s hard work clearing walkways and helping clean up piles of illegal dumping in San Pedro and Watts! OVERNIGHT CLOSURES ON VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is currently enforcing nighttime closures of the Vincent Thomas Bridge over a three-week period. Each night the bridge, located on State Route 47 (SR 47), will close in one or both directions beginning as early as 8 PM and will reopen by 6 AM the following morning. Weekend closures are not anticipated. The closures will allow crews to safely install cable safety upgrades. See graphic above for detour routes.

LATINO HERITAGE MONTH

As we close out Latino Heritage Month, yesterday we came together at City Hall to celebrate and uplift the Latino culture and the contributions they have made in shaping the City of Los Angeles. Beyond this month, I want to make sure we empower and expand opportunities in the One-Five so our Latino/a residents can thrive.

PRAYER FOR PEACE

My heart breaks to witness the tragedy in Israel and the pain that so many Angelenos are experiencing. Tragically, these acts of terrorism by Hamas will set off a chain reaction that will cause further unimaginable suffering throughout the region. Please join us on Sunday, October 15th at 3 PM as we stand in support, remember the victims of terrorism, and pray for peace.

ONE-FIVE CAREER FAIR

Join us for our 3rd One-Five Career Fair on Thursday, October 26th from 9 AM - 3 PM. With city, state and private employers participating, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with employers, apply on-site with application assistance from the LA City Personnel Department, interview, and potentially receive same-day offers from private organizations.

The Career Fair will take place at the Holy Family Grammar School at 1122 E Robidoux St. in Wilmington. Register ahead here.

BULKY ITEM DROP OFF

From 8 AM - 4:30 PM, today, October 14th, LA SAN will offer Bulky Item Drop-Offs for LA residents at the Harbor District Yard. They are accepting items such as box springs, carpets, and sofas. See flyer above for more information. Proof of residency is required including your most current LADWP bill and your identification card.

PEACE AND HEALING WALK

In a beautiful celebration of unity, our Harbor City community came together on Saturday for a Peace and Healing Walk in the name of gun violence prevention. Thank you to all the organizers, especially Partners for Peace Violence Prevention Coalition, for creating a safe and healing space for us to be together.

BELLE PORTE CLEAN UP

Illegal dumping removal and landscaping was performed on Belle Porte Ave. by GAP this week. Refrigerators and other household appliances dumped on our streets should be reported to 311 under metal/household appliances.

HALLOWEEN CONTEST

COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR

Thank you to the USC Mobile Clinic, East LA College, and the Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood Council for organizing the Harbor Gateway Community Health Fair! All services were free and included free lung and diabetes testing, physicals and more. I even took the opportunity to get a flu shot before flu season begins!

PUBLIC SAFETY MEETING

This past week, our office joined residents and businesses in Gardena, Harbor Gateway and unincorporated LA County to share resources and discuss issues that affect all of our jurisdictions. We were joined by Mayor Cerda of Gardena, Gardena PD, LAPD, LA County Sheriffs from Compton Station and more.

GAP GRAFFITI REMOVAL

I want to thank GAP for their consistent and rapid responses to graffiti in our areas, especially the Gateway. Please report any graffiti you see on either the MYLA311 app or by calling 311 directly and it will be removed by GAP!

FESTA ITALIANA

Thank you to the Little Italy of Los Angeles Association for such a fantastic Fiesta Italiana on Saturday! It was a great way to kick off Italian-American Heritage Month. They showcased the best that Italian culture has to offer including entertainment, food, music and Italian-owned small businesses! Che bella!

FALLEN TREE REMOVAL

A large ficus tree fell on Patton Ave between 8th and 9th St. on Tuesday morning and by Thursday morning the tree was completely removed. Thanks to the Bureau of Street Services, Urban Forestry Division for disassembling the large branches and LAFD for quickly arriving at the scene to rope off the damage.

LA SPORTSWALK OF FAME

The One-Five produces incredible athletic talent in all fields and this weekend was a perfect example of that as we gathered on the USS Iowa to celebrate the Los Angeles Sportswalk of Fame. Since 1978, we’ve paid tribute to local, regional, and worldwide talent, recognizing both the accomplishments these athletes have achieved in their sport and the impact on the people around them. A special congratulations to this year’s awardees Alex Gray, Fred Roggin, Bryan Bero, John Papadakis, and the Trani Majestic Family.

GRUNION GALA

It was an honor to be recognized alongside Dr. Karen Martin at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Grand Grunion Gala! This event is the Aquarium's largest fundraiser, raising more than $2 million in the last decade. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is a trusted resource that inspires exploration, respect and conservation of Southern California marine life to youth and adults across the One-Five and beyond.

WATTS LIFE CARSHOW

On Sunday I joined Watts Life United for a carshow full of community members, amazing food, and organizations in the community to offer resources. Thank you, as always, to Andre Christian for bringing our neighbors together for this event!

UPCOMING STREET FAIR

On Thursday I met with John Jones to collaborate on a street fair that would be held quarterly in the Watts Civic Center. This fair would consist of an artwalk, vending booths for nonprofits, and a farmers market. This is what leadership in community is about and we’re grateful for John Jones and Eastside Riders for everything they do.

WATTS TOWERS EXHIBIT

Black, Brown & Beige is at the Watts Towers Arts Center until March. The exhibit looks to highlight the interconnectivity between Black and Latino cultures. Check out the exhibit at the Noah Purifoy Gallery & Charles Mingus Art Gallery at 1727 East 107th St. Click here for more information.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB SOCCER LEAGUE

When the City took over the Wilmington Sports Complex this year, we asked Rec and Parks to provide space for our Wilmington kids to play soccer. On Thursday, we honored the donors who, through their support, allowed us to kick-off the very first season for the Wilmington Youth Soccer League. This new affordable league run by the Boys and Girls Club is making soccer dreams real for over 200 of our kids, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has been involved in this inaugural season.

POWER POLE ON SANDISON AND LAKME

We alerted LADWP to a broken power pole on Sandison St. and Lakme Ave. which they were able to fix this week. The pole was tied to some ropes and clearly unstable and unsafe. Thank you DWP for your work!

WATERFRONT WORSHIP FESTIVAL

On Saturday, I attended the Waterfront Worship Festival in Wilmington organized by churches, community-life saving organizations, and faith-based businesses. It was great to listen to the incredible array of gospel artists and speakers from local surrounding ministries. There were also community assistance organizations providing free resources, referrals, and information.

TRICK OR TREAT

The Tianguiz Cultural Center will be hosting a Trick or Treat event at the Wilmington Night Market on Friday, October 20th from 6 - 10 PM. The event will be held in the Wilmington Town Square at 826 N. Avalon Blvd. The Costume contest will begin at 8 PM with prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners so dress for success!

Ayer, el presidente Biden y el Departamento de Energía de Estados Unidos anunciaron la decisión de conceder a California hasta $1.200 millones para un centro regional de hidrógeno limpio, destinando una parte importante a los puertos de Los Ángeles y Long Beach. EQUIPO CLEAN 15

CIERRES NOCTURNOS EN EL PUENTE VINCENT THOMAS

El Departamento de Transporte de California (Caltrans) actualmente está imponiendo cierres nocturnos del puente Vincent Thomas durante un período de tres semanas. Cada noche, el puente, ubicado en la ruta estatal 47 (SR 47), se cerrará en una o ambas direcciones a partir de las 8 PM y volverá a abrir a las 6 AM de la mañana siguiente. No se prevén cierres de fin de semana. Los cierres permitirán a las cuadrillas instalar de forma segura mejoras de seguridad de los cables. MES DE LA HERENCIA LATINA

Al cerrar el Mes de la Herencia Latina, ayer nos reunimos en el Ayuntamiento para celebrar y realzar la cultura latina y las contribuciones que han hecho en la configuración de la ciudad de Los Ángeles. Más allá de este mes, quiero asegurarme de que empoderamos y ampliamos las oportunidades en el One-Five para que nuestros residentes latinos puedan prosperar.

ORACIÓN POR LA PAZ

Se me rompe el corazón al presenciar la tragedia en Israel y el dolor que tantos angelinos están experimentando hoy. Trágicamente, estos actos de terrorismo de Hamas desencadenarán una reacción en cadena que causará más sufrimiento inimaginable en toda la región. Acompañenos el domingo 15 de octubre a las 3 PM para apoyar a Israel, recordar a las víctimas del terrorismo y orar por la paz.

FERIA DE EMPLEOS EN EL ONE-FIVE

Acompáñenos a nuestra tercera feria de empleos en el One-Five el jueves 26 de octubre de 9 AM a 3 PM. Participarán empleadores municipales, estatales y privados y los asistentes tendrán la oportunidad de conectarse con empleadores, presentar solicitudes en el sitio con asistencia para la solicitud del Departamento de Personal de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles, entrevistarse y potencialmente recibir ofertas de trabajo el mismo día de organizaciones privadas.

CAMINATA DE PAZ Y SANACIÓN

FERIA DE SALUD COMUNITARIA

¡Gracias a la Clínica Móvil de USC, East LA College y el Consejo Vecinal de Harbor Gateway South por organizar la Feria de Salud Comunitaria de Harbor Gateway! La semana pasada, nuestra oficina se unió a residentes y empresas en Gardena, Harbor Gateway y la zona no incorporada del condado de Los Ángeles para compartir recursos y discutir temas que afectan a todas nuestras jurisdicciones. Nos acompañaron el alcalde Cerda de Gardena, la policía de Gardena, la policía de Los Ángeles, los sheriffs del condado de Los Ángeles de la estación Compton y más.

FIESTA ITALIANA

¡Gracias a la Asociación Little Italy de Los Ángeles por la fantástica Fiesta Italiana del sábado! Fue una excelente manera de iniciar el Mes de la Herencia Italoamericana. ¡Mostraron lo mejor que la cultura italiana tiene para ofrecer, incluido entretenimiento, comida, música y pequeñas empresas de propiedad italiana! ¡Che bella!

ELIMINACIÓN DE ÁRBOLES CAÍDOS

LA PASEO DEPORTIVO DE LA FAMA

El One-Five produce un talento atlético increíble en todos los campos y este fin de semana fue un ejemplo perfecto de ello cuando nos reunimos en el USS Iowa para celebrar el Sportswalk of Fame de Los Ángeles. Desde 1978, hemos rendido homenaje al talento local, regional y mundial, reconociendo tanto los logros que estos atletas han logrado en su deporte como el impacto en las personas que los rodean. Una felicitación especial a los premiados de este año Alex Gray, Fred Roggin, Bryan Bero, John Papadakis y la familia Trani Majestic.

GRUNION GALA

¡Fue un honor ser reconocido junto a la Dra. Karen Martin en la Gran Gala Grunion del Acuario Marino de Cabrillo! Este evento es la recaudación de fondos más grande del Acuario, que ha reunido más de $2 millones en la última década. El Acuario Marino de Cabrillo es un recurso confiable que inspira la exploración, el respeto y la conservación de la vida marina del sur de California a jóvenes y adultos del One-Five y más allá.

EXHIBICIÓN DE AUTOS DE WATTS

El domingo me uní a Watts Life United para una exhibición de autos llena de miembros de la comunidad, comida increíble y organizaciones de la comunidad para ofrecer recursos. ¡Gracias, como siempre, a Andre Christian por reunir a nuestros vecinos para este evento!

PRÓXIMA FERIA DE LA CALLE

El jueves acompañé a John Jones para colaborar en una feria callejera que se llevaría a cabo trimestralmente en el Centro Cívico Watts. Esta feria consistiría en un paseo artístico, puestos de venta para organizaciones sin fines de lucro y un mercado de agricultores. LIGA DE FÚTBOL DE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB

Cuando la ciudad se hizo cargo del complejo deportivo de Wilmington este año, le pedimos al departamento de parque y recreación que proporcionan espacio para que nuestros niños de Wilmington jugarán fútbol. El jueves honramos a los donantes que, a través de su apoyo, nos permitieron iniciar la primera temporada de la Wilmington Youth Soccer League. POSTE DE LUZ EN SANDISON Y LAKME

Alertamos al LADWP sobre un poste eléctrico roto en Sandison St. y Lakme Ave. que pudieron reparar esta semana. El poste estaba atado a unas cuerdas y era claramente inestable e inseguro. ¡Gracias DWP por su trabajo!

FESTIVAL DE ADORACIÓN FRENTE AL MAR

El sábado asistí al Waterfront Worship Festival en Wilmington, organizado por iglesias, organizaciones comunitarias que salvan vidas y empresas religiosas. Fue fantástico escuchar la increíble variedad de artistas gospel y oradores de los ministerios locales de los alrededores. También había organizaciones de asistencia comunitaria que proporcionaron recursos, referencias e información gratuitos.

TRICK OR TREAT

Tianguiz Cultural organizará un evento de dulce ó truco  en el Mercado Nocturno de Wilmington el viernes 20 de octubre de 6 a 10 PM. El evento se llevará a cabo en Wilmington Town Square en 826 N. Avalon Blvd. El concurso de disfraces comenzará a las 8 PM con premios para los ganadores del 1.°, 2.° y 3.° lugar, ¡así que vístete para triunfar!
