Dear Friends,

This month's quote is perhaps not as well known as some of the others that I've featured here. The idea will be familiar but you probably don't associate it with Descartes. And yet, if you think about it, it should come as no surprise that the man who coined "Cogito Ergo Sum" would also ponder upon what it means "to be".

It reminds me somewhat of Marcus Aurelius' meditation:
"Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one."

Let's get started.

Do you follow me on YouTube? Are you watching videos on Instagram?

If not, you might be missing out on some useful and educational video. For example, the Hallway Walk & Talk series has reached thousands and thousands of individuals. From med student to healthcare professional to affected patients, the videos offer something to almost everyone. Check out this recent example titled "MRI, X-Ray, CT? Alphabet Soup or Vital Info".

New Publication!

Overextended, overworked, overtired?  Feeling like there’s no wind in your sails and the currents are stagnant?  Here's my most recent publication to the Articles section of LinkedIN.

The question of Burnout in medicine has occupied the headlines for some time, and it's been something I've been thinking about and talking about for even longer. If you've joined us for NeuroRounds anytime over the past 2 years, there's a good chance you've heard a conversation about the topic. I've also been invited to talk with first responders and others who deal with this challenging phenomenon daily. In fact, burnout can affect anyone in almost any profession.

As a neurosurgeon and coach with an inclination towards philosophy, I'm intrigued by both the anatomical and the metaphysical beauty and complexity of the brain. It should be no surprise to you that combining those ideas and experiences might lead to this article.

"I'm a Neurosurgeon and This is How I Navigate Burnout."

I hope it's of value and use to you and look forward to seeing your comments on LinkedIN after you've read the article. Please do consider following me on LinkedIN to stay up to date on new articles published there.

Trenton Youth Wrestling and Learning Center

Trenton Youth Wrestling had the privilege of  hosting a delegation from the Mongolian women’s wrestling team on their visit to America. We shared what we've learned about the impact of women’s wrestling and athletics on the empowerment of women and then hopped on over to the TCNJ wrestling room to see Coach Joe Galante and his opening practice for the season. It's another proof that wrestling brings people together.

Spartan Race

Thanks Joe De Sena and Spartan for a special day at Mountain Creek.
Spartan races are always well organized and a joy to compete in. If you’ve never tried one, I highly recommend planning for one, training for one, and jumping in. Also, thanks to my partner Raamiah Bethea. We ran, we climbed, we did burpees, we talked philosophy, we talked wrestling. A special day.

As I write this, it seems as if the world is on fire. The conflict in Ukraine continues with no apparent resolution in sight. In Gaza, the events of the past 2 weeks remind us of a clash that has gone on for generations. It sometimes takes a lot of energy to remind ourselves that there are always good people in the world, there always have been, and there always will be.

The time seems right to again share this very personal story from our family history. The story is inspired by an incident in 1944 as my wife Julie's family fled the wartime Ukraine. What does it mean to be a Good Samaritan?  What is Mercy? What is Faith? This 3 part video holds surprising answers.

Watch on my website. The Good Samaritan, Vespers, and Babcia.
