On Monday we will recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Please take this time to uplift and celebrate the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples both in Los Angeles and the United States.

While our city’s birth is traced back to 1781, long before settlers arrived, the Los Angeles Basin was home to the Gabrieleño-Tongva people. This land extended from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Santa Ana River and over the entire Los Angeles basin. The area known as Tovaangar supported about 5,000 people in nearly 100 villages. Each village was independent and interconnected. In the land we now know as the One-Five, villages including Huutnga (Watts), Chaawvega (San Pedro), and Swaanga (Wilmington) thrived.

Tragically, between 1769 and 1840, Tovaangar was irrevocably changed. The arrival of the Spanish — with disease, invasive species and livestock — upended the ecological balance of the region and forced the Tongva to resettle around three missions.

As we celebrate the Indigenous people who made Los Angeles the incredible city it is, we must acknowledge the full history of our city, including the painful parts. Let us honor the resilient heritage of our tribal communities as we commemorate this special day.

The LA County voters approved Measure W – Safe, Clean Water Program in November 2018. Our district has projects in the pipeline and on the drawing board and we are eager to see them move forward to implementation. One of these projects is the Watts Civic Center Serenity Greenway. The project would provide a historic investment in new green space and a safe pedestrian path linking community schools, a civic center, parks, and a library. This project is important to me and to the Watts community which is why yesterday I introduced a motion to receive a report on the status including a project schedule, budget and funding status, and any potential impediments that may delay the project’s completion.

LIGHTING CITY HALL ITALIANO

In honor of Italian American Heritage Month, last night City Hall was lit up in the colors of the Italian Flag! Looking forward to celebrating our great Italian culture this month with many special celebrations!

CLEAN 15

This week we cleared 145 tons and we’re highlighting the team’s hard work helping clean up piles of illegal dumping in Harbor Gateway and Wilmington! OVERNIGHT CLOSURES ON VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is planning nighttime closures of the Vincent Thomas Bridge over a three-week period beginning as soon as Tuesday, October 10. Each night the bridge, located on State Route 47 (SR 47), will close in one or both directions beginning as early as 8 PM and will reopen by 6 AM the following morning. Weekend closures are not anticipated. The closures will allow crews to safely install cable safety upgrades. See graphic above for detour routes.

OPERATION SAFE HARBOR

On Monday I stood with Attorney General Rob Bonta, LAPD Chief Michel Moore, and the LAPD Harbor Division to provide an update to the multi-agency effort “Operation Safe Harbor” which resulted in the arrest of 27 suspects, the seizure of 30 weapons including ghost guns, and tens of thousands of fentanyl pills.

Over the first 9 months of my term, my heart has broken at every candlelight vigil, every rosary, each repass, and numerous church services for the families and friends who have lost their loved ones to illegal guns on the street or to drugs. We know the deep impact this has on our community. So, I am grateful to the LAPD, the California Department of Justice, Homeland Security, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their joint work to make our community safer.

HEALTHCARE HEROES

We don’t have to think very far back to three years ago when we were celebrating our hospital workers and support staff as essential workers and selfless heroes. On Thursday I stood with them in solidarity to support them in their demands for fair bargaining, good pay and safe working conditions. Let’s treat our healthcare workers as the exceptional professionals that they are.

STATE OF THE ONE-FIVE

Join us Wednesday, October 18, 2023 from 6 - 8 PM at the WLCAC - Phoenix Hall for our very first State of the One-Five. Residents from throughout the 5 communities are invited to join us to hear updates, priorities, what we’ve been working on, and what is planned ahead. Light refreshments will be provided. PEACE AND HEALING WALK

Join us at 1 PM at the Harbor City Recreation Center for a Peace and Healing Walk in the name of gun violence prevention. It will be a 1 mile walk and water will be provided but it will be hot so make sure to bring a water bottle!

OVERGROWN WEEDS ON THE MEDIAN

Recently the medians have been overgrown with weeds and filled with trash causing both an eyesore and a safety hazard. Thank you to the GAP team for keeping this area of Normandie Ave. maintained!

CLEARING PINE NEEDLES

Thanks to the LA Conservation Corps and our Clean 15 team for cleaning Western Ave. this week. We were seeing a build up of pine needles and they got to work making the area look beautiful and safe to walk through!

CLIMATE RESILIENT YARDS

Whether it’s getting solar panels on our homes or replacing our lawns with low-water-use landscaping, it will take all of us if we are to achieve our climate change goals; but, doing so is incredibly expensive. It’s so important for our government to do what it can, whether it be through funding or education, to help our residents be part of the solution. On Thursday I stood with Mayor Bass, LADWP, and representatives from the State to announce a $19 million in grant funding from the California Department of Water Resources for climate resilience projects, including one that will pay for free yard transformations in underserved LA communities. Thank you to Mike Gratrix & Reina Rodriguez for having us in your front lawn!

USC MOBILE HEALTH FAIR

Join us TODAY, Saturday, October 7th for the Harbor Gateway Community Health Fair. A variety of screenings will be available, so stop by and see what resources are there for you!

SOUTH BUREAU MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE

On Thursday evening I joined the South Bureau Ministerial Alliance meeting where our local faith leaders meet with government leaders and public safety officers to bring our community together and share updates. We also took the opportunity, while we were together in community, to celebrate Reverend JJ’s birthday!

ONE ALLEY AT A TIME

On Saturday morning I joined the Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council with the Clean15 Team for their One Alley at a Time beautification clean up. This was the 4th time they hosted this event and we worked to clean 8th through 12 Streets in the blocks between Centre & Palos Verdes Streets.

FESTA ITALIANA

Today we’ll be joining the Little Italy of Los Angeles Association for the Festa Italiana from 11 AM - 10 PM! There will be live entertainment and authentic Italian food. It’s free and fun for the whole family!

ELIMINATING GRAFFITI

This week we alerted the Department of Rec and Parks to numerous graffiti taggings around the community including at Bogdanovich Park and the Bluff Lookout at the intersection of Bluff and Pacific Ave. They were able to get it cleaned quickly!

CLEARING DUMPING ON PACIFIC

Our Clean 15 Team is putting in the work! On Thursday they were able to clear this large pile of debris and bulky items by Whiskey Flats on Pacific Avenue in the Harbor area.

WATTS TOWERS WEEKEND FESTIVITIES

The Watts Towers are a beloved, cultural gem in the One-Five. This weekend we gathered there for a two-day celebration by the Watts Towers Arts Campus for the 41st Day of the Drum Festival on Saturday and the 46th Annual Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival on Sunday. It was great to be in community, in appreciation of the arts. Already looking forward to next year!

100 YEARS OF JORDAN HIGH

Jordan High School in Watts celebrated its 100th Birthday on Saturday so we honored that milestone with a party for all who have come through the school. A special shout out to Principal Kim for his tireless dedication to Jordan students. Go Bulldogs!

CLEARING FLINT

Last week the 600 block of Flint Ave in Wilmington was covered with trash and debris; our Clean 15 team cleared it out and now there are idling trucks parking to cue up for their next jobs. This is a situation of whack-a-mole - and we’re going to keep whacking. For more information click here.

Our office participated in the regional network summit of the Best Start program. Best Start, part of First 5 LA, works to create the best possible community for young children and their families. To learn more about how to be involved in Best Start Wilmington click here.

VAX UP

LA Care will be hosting a free COVID-19 vaccine/flu shot event next Friday, October 13th from 1-4 PM at Wilmington CRC on 911 North Avalon Blvd. Flu vaccines are available for people ages 3 and older and the COVID-19 vaccines are available for people ages 12 and older.

El lunes reconoceremos el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas. Tómese este tiempo para reconocer y celebrar las invaluables contribuciones y la resiliencia de los pueblos indígenas tanto en Los Ángeles como en todo Estados Unidos.

Si bien el nacimiento de nuestra ciudad se remonta a 1781, mucho antes de que llegaran los colonos, la Cuenca de Los Ángeles era el hogar del pueblo Gabrieleño-Tongva. Esta tierra se extendía desde las montañas de San Gabriel hasta el río Santa Ana y por toda la cuenca de Los Ángeles. La zona conocida como Tovaangar albergaba a unas 5.000 personas en casi 100 aldeas. Cada pueblo era independiente y estaba interconectado. Los votantes del condado de Los Ángeles aprobaron la Medida W – El Programa de agua limpia y segura en noviembre de 2018. Nuestro distrito tiene proyectos en trámite y en la mesa de dibujo y estamos ansiosos por verlos avanzar hacia su implementación. Uno de estos proyectos es el Watts Civic Center Serenity Greenway. CIERRES NOCTURNOS EN EL PUENTE VINCENT THOMAS

El Departamento de Transporte de California (Caltrans) está planeando cierres nocturnos del puente Vincent Thomas durante un período de tres semanas a partir del martes 10 de octubre. Cada noche, el puente, ubicado en la ruta estatal 47 (SR 47), se cerrará en una o ambas direcciones a partir de las 8 PM y reabrirá a las 6 AM de la mañana siguiente. No se prevén cierres de fin de semana. Los cierres permitirán a las cuadrillas instalar de forma segura mejoras de seguridad de los cables. Consulte el gráfico de arriba para conocer las rutas de desvío.

OPERACIÓN PUERTO SEGURO

El lunes estuve con el Fiscal General Rob Bonta, el LAPD Jefe Michel Moore y la División Portuaria de LAPD para brindar una actualización del esfuerzo de varias agencias de Operation Safe Harbor (Operación Puerto Seguro) que resultó en el arresto de 27 sospechosos, la incautación de 30 armas, incluidas armas fantasma y decenas de miles de pastillas de fentanilo.

Durante los primeros nueve meses de mi mandato, mi corazón se ha roto con cada vigilia, las velas, cada rosario, cada repetición y numerosos servicios religiosos para las familias y amigos que han perdido a sus seres queridos a causa de las armas ilegales en la calle o de las drogas. Sabemos el profundo impacto que esto tiene en nuestra comunidad. Por lo tanto, agradezco al LAPD, el Departamento de Justicia de California, Seguridad Nacional y la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones por su trabajo conjunto para intensificar y hacer que nuestra comunidad sea más segura.

HÉROES DE LA SALUD

No tenemos que olvidar que hace apenas tres años, celebramos a los trabajadores de nuestros hospitales y al personal de apoyo como trabajadores esenciales y héroes desinteresados. El jueves los acompañé en solidaridad para apoyarlos en sus demandas de negociación justa, buenos salarios y condiciones de trabajo seguras. Tratemos a nuestros trabajadores de la salud como los profesionales excepcionales que son.

PATIOS RESILIENTES AL CLIMA

Ya sea instalando paneles solares en nuestros hogares o reemplazando nuestro césped con jardines que utilicen poca agua, será necesario que todos trabajemos para lograr nuestros objetivos en materia de cambio climático; pero hacerlo es increíblemente caro. Es muy importante que nuestro gobierno haga lo que pueda, ya sea mediante financiación o educación, para ayudar a nuestros residentes a ser parte de la solución. El jueves estuve junto a la alcaldesa Bass, el LADWP y representantes del estado para anunciar una subvención de $19 millones del Departamento de Recursos Hídricos de California para proyectos de resiliencia climática, incluyendo uno que pagará transformaciones gratuitas de jardines en comunidades desatendidas de Los Ángeles. ¡Gracias a Mike Gratrix y Reina Rodríguez por recibirnos en su jardín.

FERIA DE SALUD MÓVIL DE LA USC

ALIANZA MINISTERIAL DE LA OFICINA SUR

El jueves por la noche me uní a la reunión de la Alianza Ministerial de la Oficina Sur, donde nuestros líderes religiosos locales se reúnen con líderes gubernamentales y funcionarios de seguridad pública para reunir a nuestra comunidad y compartir actualizaciones. ¡También aprovechamos la oportunidad mientras estábamos juntos en comunidad para celebrar el cumpleaños del Reverendo JJ!

UN CALLEJÓN A LA VEZ

El sábado por la mañana me uní al Consejo Vecinal de Central San Pedro con el equipo Clean 15 para su limpieza de embellecimiento Un Callejón a la Vez. Esta fue la cuarta vez que organizaron este evento y trabajamos para limpiar las calles 8 a 12 en las cuadras entre las calles Center y Palos Verdes.

FIESTA ITALIANA

¡Hoy nos uniremos a la Asociación Little Italy de Los Ángeles para la Festa Italiana de 11 AM a 10 PM! Habrá entretenimiento en vivo y auténtica comida italiana. ¡Es gratis y divertido para toda la familia!

ELIMINANDO EL GRAFFITI

FESTIVIDADES DEL FIN DE SEMANA DE WATTS TOWERS

Las Watts Towers son una joya cultural querida en el One-Five. Este fin de semana nos reunimos ahí para una celebración de dos días en el Watts Towers Arts Campus para el aniversario número 41 del Día del Festival del Tambor el sábado y el 46.º Festival Anual de Jazz Simon Rodia Watts Towers el domingo. Fue genial estar en comunidad, en apreciación de las artes. ¡Ya estamos deseando que llegue el próximo.

100 AÑOS DE JORDAN HIGH

Jordan High School en Watts celebró su cumpleaños número 100 el sábado, por lo que honramos ese hito con una fiesta para todos los que pasaron por la escuela. Un reconocimiento especial al director Kim por su incansable dedicación a los estudiantes de Jordan. ¡Vamos Bulldogs!

La semana pasada, la cuadra 600 de Flint Ave en Wilmington quedó cubierta de basura y escombros; Nuestro equipo Clean 15 lo limpió y ahora hay camiones inactivos, estacionándose para prepararse para sus próximos trabajos.
