As we head into Halloween, Thanksgiving, and then the winter holidays, we will need to stay focused on doing all that we can to prevent Angelenos from falling into homelessness. That will require us to help our unhoused neighbors get inside, as well as to keep roofs over the heads of those who are housed. This is why during June’s Budget Deliberations, I acted in the Budget Committee to increase tenant rental assistance and provide direct assistance to mom and pop landlords. We need to keep people in the homes they have - and keep local landlords in the rental business.
The landlord portal for the United to House LA Emergency Rental Assistance Program is open and I encourage small landlords who own 12 units or less to apply before 6 PM on October 31st. This program will pay landlords up to 6 months of rental arrears on behalf of low-income tenants who are at risk of homelessness due to unpaid rent.

This week I honored Feed and Be Fed & Alma Backyard Farms for the 12th Annual Good Food Day in Los Angeles. Building more resilient neighborhoods, filled with healthy, fresh, and affordable foods is incredibly important to me. We need to do this throughout the five communities, but especially our food desert regions. Whether it be through community gardens, which I’m seeking to do in Harbor City Park, or working with the Healthy Neighborhood Market Network to empower existing stores to bring healthy food into their communities, which I’m looking to do throughout the district but especially in the Harbor City and Watts area - from the soil to the market, together we can build a healthier, sustainable One-Five. |

This week we cleared 47 tons and we are highlighting the team’s hard work clearing walkways, overgrown areas and helping clean up piles of illegal dumping in San Pedro and Watts! Also, this Wednesday we celebrated the first 100 Days of the Clean 15 Team and I’m thrilled to share that we’ve picked up, removed, and discarded 1,570 tons of trash, debris and overgrown vegetation on streets, alleys and public spaces throughout the One-Five. NATIONAL CLERGY APPRECIATION MONTH |

In honor of National Clergy Appreciation Month, this Tuesday I honored Pastor Adam Stevenson of Warren CME Church. Pastor Stevenson is devoted to both bringing his faith to the community and inviting the community to his faith and church. A dedicated resident of the One-Five, he’s involved in his Neighborhood Council, our homelessness outreach efforts, and overall uplifting of all our neighborhoods. Thank you for your service and God bless you! |

URBAN CONSERVATION CLASS |

This week I joined USC professors Regina Wetzer & Sergey Nuzhdin (and San Pedro residents!) to discuss with their class how to preserve nature in cities. It was great to be among our future environmentalists talking about how to work through our governmental structures in order to advance environmental policy. |

LA REPAIR |

Calling all Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, and Wilmington residents! The L.A. REPAIR Grant Opportunity is now open! Community-based organizations and nonprofits are invited to turn the community's ideas into reality by submitting a program proposal. Qualifying proposals will be placed on a ballot for the REPAIR Zone community to vote on which to fund.
The Department of Civil & Human Rights will be hosting an informational webinar on November 2nd at 11 AM for folks to learn more. Proposals are due by Wednesday, November 29th at 12 PM, so don't delay! |

Harbor City Neighborhood Council hit the streets with LAPD on Wednesday to select the best decorated homes in the Harbor City area for the Halloween Decoration Contest. Congratulations to all 7 winners from every section of Harbor City! |

On Thursday GAP was able to clear a pile of litter on the sidewalk at Normandie and 252nd. While we have our Clean 15 team, we continue to work with our local community groups to make sure issues from throughout the 5 communities get addressed in a timely manner. |

Kids from Rancho San Pedro had a great opportunity to play football this weekend with former NFL receiver Deryn Bowser and a former One-Five Harbor College athlete! We definitely put the Rancho San Pedro field to good use - running plays, practice drills, and then a flag football scrimmage! Thanks to SLO Lee for organizing, and to the Rancho staff and resident leaders for such a great morning! |

AFFORDABLE HOUSING GRAND OPENING |

On Wednesday we cut the ribbon for 456 West - 91 new apartments from studios to 3-bedroom for families and individuals earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income. Everyone deserves to have a safe, comfortable place to lay their head at night - and I’m proud that we’re providing that with these 91 units in the Harbor area. As we continue to tackle our housing crisis, we need to build at every level, but especially affordable housing to open doors to homes for these residents and prevent them from falling into homelessness. |

This week the Watts Walking Club was joined by the Community Safety Partnership and our office to point out items and issues that needed to be addressed. On our route we discovered a trash can on fire and we called LAFD who quickly put it out. |

COMMUNITY CHAT AT CII |

This week our office attended the Watts Community Chat at the Children’s Institute, where early childhood education managers and caseworkers highlighted resources available to the community. Partner organizations also attended to share updates to Watts Residents. |

WEST NILE VIRUS |

Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) has confirmed the first mosquito sample to test positive for West Nile virus in the Watts neighborhood. Mosquito control is a shared responsibility and residents must take an active role in reducing the threat of WNV in their neighborhoods by taking the following steps above. |

ONE-FIVE CAREER FAIR |

On Thursday, we held our THIRD One-Five Career Fair, this time in East Wilmington! With 52 city, state and private employers participating, attendees were able to connect with employers, apply on-site with application assistance from the LA City Personnel Department, interview, and potentially receive same-day offers.
I’m committed to continuing bringing the job offers into our own backyard so that One-Five residents can find and build careers in the community they know and love. |

COACH JOSE QUEZADA SQUARE |

Last night I joined Sandy Quezada and the Wilmington community to unveil a new square dedication on Bayview and D St. as “Coach Jose Quezada Square.” Jose was a pillar of the community and someone who was out there regularly volunteering his time as a coach, mentor, peacekeeper, and advocate to make his community better. He is greatly missed. May his memory be a blessing. |

Yesterday we celebrated Halloween a little early at East Wilmington Greenbelt Park with the Neighborhood Watch. We passed out popcorn to the kids, played games in our Halloween costumes, and decorated trick or treat bags. |

Para mí es increíblemente importante construir vecindarios más resilientes, llenos de alimentos saludables, frescos y asequibles. Necesitamos hacer esto en las cinco comunidades, pero especialmente en nuestras regiones desérticas alimentarias. Ya sea a través de jardines comunitarios, lo cual estoy tratando de hacer en Harbor City Park, o trabajando con Healthy Neighborhood Market Network para capacitar a las tiendas existentes para que lleven alimentos saludables a sus comunidades. El pastor Stevenson se dedica tanto a llevar su fe a la comunidad como a invitarlos a su iglesia. CLASE DE CONSERVACIÓN URBANA |

Fue fantástico estar entre nuestros futuros ambientalistas hablando sobre cómo trabajar a través de nuestras estructuras gubernamentales para avanzar en la política ambiental. |

LA REPAIR |

¡Hacemos un llamado a todos los residentes de Harbor Gateway, Harbor City y Wilmington! ¡La oportunidad de subvención de L.A. REPAIR ya está abierta! Se invita a las organizaciones comunitarias y sin fines de lucro a convertir las ideas de la comunidad en realidad mediante la presentación de una propuesta de programa. GRAN INAUGURACIÓN DE VIVIENDA ASEQUIBLE |

El miércoles cortamos el listón de inauguración en el 456 West: 91 nuevos apartamentos, desde estudios hasta apartamentos de 3 habitaciones, para familias e individuos que ganan entre el 30% y el 80% del ingreso medio del área. Todo el mundo merece tener un lugar seguro y cómodo donde descansar por la noche, y estoy orgulloso de que hoy se lo proporcionemos con estas 91 unidades en el área del puerto. A medida que continuamos abordando nuestra crisis de vivienda, necesitamos construir en todos los niveles, pero especialmente en viviendas asequibles, para abrir las puertas a los hogares de estos residentes y evitar que se queden sin hogar. |

VIRUS DEL NILO OCCIDENTAL |

El Distrito de Control de Vectores del Condado de Los Ángeles (GLACVCD) confirmó que la primera muestra de mosquito dio positivo para el virus del Nilo Occidental en el vecindario de Watts. El control de mosquitos es una responsabilidad compartida y los residentes deben desempeñar un papel activo para reducir la amenaza del VNO en sus vecindarios siguiendo los pasos mencionados a continuación. |

¡El jueves celebramos nuestra TERCERA Feria Profesional de Empleos del One-Five, esta vez en East Wilmington! Con la participación de 52 empleadores municipales, estatales y privados, los asistentes pudieron conectarse con empleadores, presentar solicitudes en el sitio con asistencia del Departamento de Personal de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles, entrevistarse y potencialmente recibir ofertas el mismo día.
Me comprometo a seguir trayendo ofertas de trabajo a nuestro propio patio trasero para que los residentes del One-Five puedan encontrar y desarrollar carreras en la comunidad que conocen y aman. |

Anoche me uní a Sandy Quezada y la comunidad de Wilmington para develar una nueva plaza dedicada en Bayview y D St. como “Coach José Quezada Square”. José era un pilar de la comunidad y alguien que estaba ahí regularmente ofreciendo su tiempo como entrenador, mentor, pacificador y defensor para mejorar su comunidad. Se le echa mucho de menos. Que su memoria sea una bendición. |

Ayer celebramos Halloween temprano en East Wilmington Greenbelt Park con la grupo de vigilancia vecinal. Repartimos palomitas de maíz a los niños, jugamos con nuestros disfraces de Halloween y decoramos bolsas de truco o trato. |
