This past week we celebrated Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, events throughout the One-Five. Traditionally observed on November 1st and 2nd, it is a celebratory and meaningful time for family and friends to remember loved ones who have passed.

This two-day celebration is about honoring and keeping the memory of our deceased family and friends alive. I was able to visit so many of our communities during this special time and see all the beautiful ofrendas full of photos of family and friends, sugar skulls, marigolds, memorabilia, food treats, and more.

From Watts, throughout the Gateway, to Harbor City, Wilmington and San Pedro, I was honored to share your Día de los Muertos celebrations and learn even more about each of you.

As we head into the next week I also want to wish you a Happy Veterans Day on Friday, in honor of all of our family members and friends who currently serve or have served our country. Their bravery, selflessness, and courage are an inspiration for us all.

The LA Waterfront has acres of recreational space from Wilmington to San Pedro which require maintenance, operations, and programming. The Wilmington Waterfront Promenade Project will feature a promenade, a public pier and dock, a playground, community recreational space, and more. This week I introduced a motion for the Port of LA to report on the public space maintenance, operational plans, and staff deployment to keep our Waterfront public spaces beautiful and accessible for residents and visitors as the LA Waterfront continues to grow.

CLEAN 15

Check out these Before and Afters of our Clean 15 Team’s work! This week we are highlighting the team’s hard work clearing walkways, overgrown areas and helping clean up piles of illegal dumping in Harbor City and Harbor Gateway! TRUNK OR TREAT

Over the past week we celebrated the Halloween festivities with Trunk or Treat events throughout the One-Five! I had a great time attending the events at East Wilmington Greenbelt Park, Angels Gate Park, the USS Iowa, Morning Star Baptist Church, and Sage Park Apts. in the Gateway - we passed out popcorn, had a costume contest, listened to music and played some games!

STATE OF THE COUNTY

On Thursday I was honored to provide welcoming remarks at Supervisor Janice Hahn’s State of the County at CRAFTED at the Port of LA. The State of the County was a great opportunity for residents to hear about all the hard work Supervisor Hahn has been doing and her vision for the 4th Supervisorial District going forward. A special thanks to Elise Swanson and the Chamber for another great “State of the” event!

LASAN & ENVIRONMENT IS HIRING

LASanitation & Environment is hiring Environmental Compliance Inspectors (ECIs) in three different divisions with a starting salary of $75,460.

Watershed Protection Division (WPD)
Industrial Waste Management Division (IWMD)
Livability Services Division (LSD)

The primary responsibility of LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) is to collect, clean and recycle solid and liquid waste generated by residential, commercial and industrial users in the City of Los Angeles and surrounding communities. For more information and to apply click here.

OVERNIGHT CLOSURES ON VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE

This week the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced that due to unanticipated construction delays and to the upcoming holiday season, the cable repair project on the Vincent Thomas Bridge is now anticipated to be completed in early January. They will continue to enforce nighttime closures with the exceptions of weekends and holiday periods. Each night the bridge, located on State Route 47 (SR 47), will close in one or both directions beginning as early as 8 PM and will reopen by 6 AM the following morning. The closures will allow crews to safely install cable safety upgrades. See graphic above for detour routes.

LA REPAIR

Calling all Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, and Wilmington residents! The L.A. REPAIR Grant Opportunity is now open! Community-based organizations and nonprofits are invited to turn the community's ideas into reality by submitting a program proposal. Qualifying proposals will be placed on a ballot for the REPAIR Zone community to vote on which to fund. Proposals are due by Wednesday, November 29th at 12 PM, so don't delay!

COMING TOGETHER IN MEMORY

Community members celebrated the life of Benjamin Wong, a beloved neighborhood store owner of Bob’s Ranch Market who recently passed away at the age of 89. This Wednesday, I adjourned the Council meeting in his memory.

GRAFFITI REMOVAL

Thanks to GAP for quickly working to remove the graffiti on Normandie Ave. this week. This is a sensitive area site near preschools and we will continue to work with community partners to create safe walkways for our kids as they go to and from school.

GUTTER MAINTENANCE

Thanks to the Clean 15 Team for performing gutter maintenance on Sepulveda Blvd between Western and Normandie Aves. this week! As we approach the Winter season we will need to continue to make sure that our gutters are clear before the rain comes to avoid flooding.

STREETLIGHT REPLACEMENT

A streetlight that fell over recently was replaced and repaired this week in Harbor Gateway North. The Bureau of Street Lighting also worked throughout our neighborhoods during this week to repair existing lights that were damaged.

VEGETATION MAINTENANCE

GAP assisted us this week by cutting down and maintaining overgrown brush that was piling up on Figueroa St. just north of 149th St.

STANFORD AVENUE COMMUNITY CLEAN UP

Residents around Stanford Ave. assisted in a community clean up underneath the underpass of the 105 freeway and Stanford Ave. Thanks to the community's effort, the area looks great! Please continue to report illegal dumping, or bulky item pickup to 311.

CUP ART SHOW

This weekend I attended the 3rd Annual Cup Art Show, held for the first time in the Harbor Area in front of The Artistry. Both Paños and Copas were created by inmates in the California Department of Corrections with Paños beginning in the 1930’s. Paños (drawings made on bed sheets and pillowcases) and Copas (made on coffee cups) have evolved over time into masterful works with themes such as Catholic imagery, Aztec symbolism, and prison scenes. Thanks to Mike Avena, Alan Padilla, Gerry Padilla, MC Pancho, and ILWU Local 13 for putting on this incredible event - I hope to continue this event for years to come!

MARINE CORPS. LEAGUE CEREMONY

The Marine Corps. League is a Veteran Service Organization that honors veterans, mentors youth, supports the Marine Corps.’ Honor Guard and Toys for Tots missions. This weekend I attended “The Big Stick” Ceremony to welcome the new Marine Corps. League Detachment on the USS Iowa. “The Big Stick” was the nickname given to the Battleship Iowa in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt's advice: "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."

TREE TRIMMING

This week 14 trees were trimmed by Street Services in the North West area of San Pedro on Patton Ave. from 9th to 10th St. and 8th St. from Patton Ave. to Averill Ave. If you have a tree you’d like to see trimmed or pruned you can call 311 or use the MyLA311 app.

MOVIE NIGHT AT PECK PARK

Stopped by Peck Park on Friday evening for LA Recreation and Parks’ movie night! Attendees in costumes received candy, were able to play in the bounce house, and watch Casper the Friendly Ghost outside under the stars. Thanks to the Northwest Neighborhood Council for hosting such a great night!

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WALK

It was a beautiful morning on Saturday to gather with the Watts community and raise awareness for breast cancer at Morning Star Baptist Church’s Breast Cancer Walk. Thank you to Lavern Clark for bringing our neighbors together for such a powerful event.

HEALTH FAIR

This weekend I stopped by the Fall into Wellness Fair at Macedonia Church which brought different resources (and games for kids!) to the community as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention partnership.

EL TORITO MARKET

This weekend I stopped by El Torito Market to pick up some avocados and talk to them about their involvement in the Healthy Neighborhood Market Network Program. El Torito Market - owned and operated by the Pasillas family - has been a fixture in Watts for the last 30 years.

JERSEYS AND HARVEST

In a very special Trunk or Treat at Morning Star Baptist Church edition it was Jerseys and Harvest - where we all wore our favorite sports jerseys! Thanks to Chosen Angels for bringing basketballs, backpacks, and candy bags for the kids!

ILLEGAL DUMPING

This week we were notified by a resident of a business illegally dumping on East E St. and we sent the Clean 15 Team out there immediately to clean the debris. Our office is now investigating who purposefully dumped the trash as we begin to work towards a solution for illegal dumping in our community.

HEALTHY EATING RESOURCE FAIR

Join us Tuesday at 1 PM for a Healthy Eating Resource Fair sponsored by L.A. Care and Blue Shield Promise Community Resource Center at 911 N. Avalon Blvd. Participants in the fair could receive a $20 grocery gift card!

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS 5K RUN/WALK

Join us this evening at the Wilmington Waterfront Park for the 4th Annual Wilmington YMCA Día de Los Muertos 5K Run/Walk & 1K Youth Run. The Opening Ceremony begins at 5 PM, see flyer for more details.

Esta semana reconocimos el Día de los Muertos en todo el One-Five. Es un momento festivo y significativo para que familiares y amigos recuerden a sus seres queridos fallecidos.

Esta celebración de dos días tiene como objetivo honrar y mantener viva la memoria de sus seres queridos. Pude visitar muchas de nuestras comunidades durante este tiempo especial y ver todas las hermosas ofrendas llenas de fotografías de sus seres queridos, calaveras de azúcar, flores de cempasúchil, recuerdos y más.

Desde Watts, pasando por el Gateway y Harbor City, hasta Wilmington y San Pedro, tuve el honor de ser parte de sus celebraciones del Día de los Muertos y aprender aún más sobre cada uno de ustedes.

A medida que avanzamos hacia la próxima semana, también quiero desearles un feliz Día de los Veteranos el viernes, en honor a todos nuestros familiares y amigos que actualmente sirven o han servido a nuestro país. Su valentía y altruismo son una inspiración para todos nosotros.

LA Waterfront tiene acres de espacio recreativo desde Wilmington hasta San Pedro que requieren mantenimiento, operación y programación. TRUCK OR TREAT

¡Durante la semana pasada celebramos las festividades de Halloween con eventos Trunk or Treat durante todo el One-Five! ESTADO DEL CONDADO

El jueves tuve el honor de brindar palabras de bienvenida en el informe sobre el estado del condado de la supervisora Janice Hahn en CRAFTED en el puerto de Los Ángeles. El Estado del Condado fue una gran oportunidad para que los residentes escucharan sobre todo el arduo trabajo que ha estado haciendo la Supervisora Hahn y su visión para el futuro del 4to Distrito. ¡Un agradecimiento especial a Elise Swanson y la Cámara por otro gran evento!

CIERRES NOCTURNOS EN EL PUENTE VINCENT THOMAS

Esta semana, el Departamento de Transporte de California (Caltrans) anunció que debido a retrasos imprevistos en la construcción y a la próxima temporada navideña, se prevé que el proyecto de reparación del cable en el puente Vincent Thomas esté terminado a principios de enero. Seguirán aplicando cierres nocturnos a excepción de fines de semana y periodos festivos. Cada noche, el puente, ubicado en la ruta estatal 47 (SR 47), se cerrará en una o ambas direcciones a partir de las 8 PM y volverá a abrir a las 6 AM de la mañana siguiente. Los cierres permitirán a las cuadrillas instalar de forma segura mejoras de seguridad de los cables. Consulte la gráfica para conocer las rutas de desvío.

LA REPAIR

¡Hacemos un llamado a todos los residentes de Harbor Gateway, Harbor City y Wilmington! ¡La oportunidad de la subvención L.A. REPAIR ya está abierta! Se invita a las organizaciones comunitarias y sin fines de lucro a convertir las ideas de la comunidad en realidad mediante la presentación de una propuesta de programa. Las propuestas calificadas se colocarán en una boleta para que la comunidad de LA REPAIR Zone vote sobre cuál financiar. Las propuestas deben entregarse antes del miércoles 29 de noviembre a las 12 PM, ¡así que no se demore!

JUNTOS EN MEMORIA

Los miembros de la comunidad celebraron la vida de Benjamin Wong, un querido dueño de una tienda de barrio de Bob's Ranch Market que falleció recientemente a la edad de 89 años. Este miércoles, clausuré la reunión del Consejo en su memoria.

ELIMINACIÓN DE GRAFFITI

Gracias a GAP por trabajar rápidamente para eliminar el graffiti en Normandie Ave esta semana. Este es un sitio de área sensible cerca de escuelas preescolares y continuaremos trabajando con socios comunitarios para crear pasillos seguros para nuestros niños cuando van y regresan de la escuela.

MANTENIMIENTO DE CUNETAS

¡Gracias al equipo de Clean 15 por realizar el mantenimiento de cunetas en Sepulveda Blvd entre Western y Normandie Ave. esta semana! A medida que nos acercamos a la temporada de invierno, tendremos que seguir asegurándonos de que nuestras cunetas permanezcan despejadas antes de que llegue la lluvia.

REEMPLAZO DE ALUMBRADO

Una farola que se cayó recientemente fue reemplazada y reparada esta semana en Harbor Gateway North. La Oficina de Alumbrado Público también trabajó en nuestros vecindarios durante esta semana para reparar las luces existentes que resultaron dañadas.

MANTENIMIENTO DE LA VEGETACIÓN

GAP nos ayudó esta semana cortando y manteniendo la maleza que se estaba acumulando en Figueroa, justo al norte de 149th St.

LIMPIEZA COMUNITARIA DE LA AVENIDA STANFORD

EXPOSICIÓN DE CUP ART

Este fin de semana asistí a la 3ª Exposición Anual del Cup Art, que se celebró por primera vez en el área del puerto frente a The Artistry. Tanto Paños como Copas fueron creados por reclusos del Departamento Correccional de California y comenzó en la década de 1930. Paños (dibujos hechos sobre sábanas y fundas de almohada) y Copas (hechos sobre tazas de café) han evolucionado con el tiempo hasta convertirse en obras magistrales con temas como la imaginería católica, el simbolismo azteca y las escenas carcelarias. Gracias a Mike Avena, Alan Padilla, Gerry Padilla, MC Pancho y ILWU Local 13 por organizar este increíble evento. ¡Espero continuar con este evento en los años venideros!

CEREMONIA DE LIGA CUERPOS DE MARINA

La Liga del Cuerpo de Marines es una organización de servicios para veteranos que honra a los veteranos, asesora a los jóvenes, apoya las misiones de la Guardia de Honor del Cuerpo de Marines y Toys for Tots. Este fin de semana asistí a la ceremonia “The Big Stick” para dar la bienvenida al nuevo Cuerpo de Marines Destacado de la Liga en el USS Iowa. “The Big Stick” fue el apodo que recibió el Battleship Iowa en honor al consejo del presidente Theodore Roosevelt: "Habla en voz baja y carga un palo grande; llegarás lejos".

Esta semana, Street Services podó 14 árboles en el área noroeste de San Pedro en Patton Ave. desde 9th hasta 10th St. y 8th St. desde Patton Ave. hasta Averill Ave. Si tiene un árbol que le gustaría ver recortado o podado, puede llamar al 311 o usar la aplicación MyLA311.

NOCHE DE CINE EN PECK PARK

¡Pasé por Peck Park el viernes por la noche para la noche de cine de LA Rec and Parks! Los asistentes disfrazados recibieron dulces, pudieron jugar en la casa inflable y ver a Casper, el fantasma amistoso, afuera, bajo las estrellas. ¡Gracias al Consejo Vecinal del Noroeste por organizar una noche tan maravillosa!

CAMINATA DE CONCIENTIZACIÓN SOBRE EL CÁNCER DE MAMA

Fue una hermosa mañana el sábado reuniéndose con la comunidad de Watts para crear conciencia sobre el cáncer de mama en la Caminata contra el Cáncer de Mama de la Iglesia Bautista Morning Star. Gracias a Lavern Clark por reunir a nuestros vecinos en un evento tan poderoso.

FERIA DE LA SALUD

Este fin de semana pasé por la Feria Fall into Wellness en la Iglesia Macedonia, que trajo diferentes recursos (¡y juegos para niños!) a la comunidad, así como a la asociación con los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades.

MERCADO EL TORITO

Este fin de semana pasé por El Torito Market para comprar algunos aguacates y hablar con ellos sobre su participación en el Programa de la Red de Mercados Vecinales de Salud. El Mercado El Torito, propiedad y operado por la familia Pasillas, ha sido un elemento fijo en Watts durante los últimos 30 años.

JERSEYS Y COSECHA

En una edición muy especial de Trunk or Treat en Morning Star Baptist Church fue Jerseys and Harvest, ¡donde todos usamos nuestras camisetas deportivas favoritas! ¡Gracias a Chosen Angels por traer pelotas de baloncesto, mochilas y bolsas de dulces para los niños!

VERTEDERO ILEGAL

Esta semana, una residente nos notificó sobre un negocio que arrojaba desechos ilegalmente en East E St. y enviamos al equipo de Clean 15 inmediatamente para limpiar los escombros. Nuestra oficina ahora está investigando quién arrojó la basura intencionalmente mientras comenzamos a trabajar para encontrar una solución al vertido ilegal en nuestra comunidad.

FERIA DE RECURSOS DE COMIDA SALUDABLE

Acompanenos el martes a la 1 p. m. para una feria de recursos sobre alimentación saludable patrocinada por L.A. Care y Blue Shield Promise Community Resource Center en la 911 N. Avalon Blvd. ¡Los participantes en la feria podrían recibir una tarjeta de regalo de comestibles por valor de $20!

CARRERA/CAMINATA 5K DEL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

Acompáñenos esta noche en Wilmington Waterfront Park para la cuarta carrera/caminata anual de 5km y carrera juvenil de 1 km del Día de los Muertos de Wilmington YMCA. La ceremonia de apertura comienza a las 5 PM; consulte el folleto para obtener más detalles.
