As we head into Thanksgiving and the holiday season, I want to take a moment to thank all of our city workers for the tireless work they do year-round.

My heart is as a public servant, as a city worker. My dad was a Los Angeles City Firefighter and one of my first jobs was as a student professional worker at the Port of Los Angeles. I recognize this work is hard and I have endless gratitude for the women and men who, day in and day out, work for our constituents.

On Thursday we showed our appreciation with a luncheon for our city workforce who serve the One-Five and embody the entire One-Five ethic - equitably dedicated and serving each of our 5 communities. From Rec and Parks and LAPD, to LAFD, DWP, Public Works, Animal Services and Cultural Affairs, and all of our city departments - our city workforce is what keeps Los Angeles moving.  Our employees show up each day to make somebody's life a little bit better, to provide the best service, and improve the lives of people in this city. This luncheon was the perfect opportunity to show our deep gratitude to our city workers who diligently serve residents they know, some they don’t know and people who they may never meet, but all in an effort to make our city better.

And, in the spirit of Thanksgiving - I want to give thanks to the One-Five residents. Thank you for staying engaged, bringing ideas, and working to make our 5 communities so great. I’m in this role because of you and for you, and for that I’m forever grateful.

Through our budget and legislative processes, we have actively provided relief to make landlords whole and keep tenants in their homes. This week the Council took up rent increases starting in February for those living in RSO (Rent Stabilization Ordinance) units. The Council voted to allow landlords to increase rent by 4% and up to 6% if the landlord pays utilities for the building. I introduced an amendment to the motion for the City Attorney and LAHD to report back to establish what would be allowable rent increases for small housing providers. This program may include a scheduled, catch-up provision, consistent with the existing RSO ordinance. I have always said we need to keep renters in their homes - but we also need to keep mom-and-pop landlords in the rental business. The last thing we want is for major corporations to take control of our local RSO units.

CLEAN 15

ILWU TRAINING CENTER

On Wednesday, I took a tour of the PMA/ILWU maintenance and repair training facility, currently under construction at Pier 400. Harbor Commission Vice President Diane Middleton, ILWU Local 13 President Gary Herrera, port staff, and PMA representatives were on hand to see the progress. As port operations continue to transition to clean, sustainable tech, it is imperative that we advocate to retain the good jobs we have, and retrain and up-skill our workers in the new equipment. This center will empower workers to adapt, maintain and repair zero-emission technologies efficiently and productively.

On Thursday night I went on Inside the Issues on Spectrum 1 to talk about updates to the Waterfront Development projects, the importance of the Public Access Investment Plan (PAIP), and public safety in the One-Five. ONE-FIVE EXPUNGEMENT CLINIC

Your past shouldn’t dictate your future but tragically, it does for too many Americans. On December 4th, we will be hosting an expungement clinic in the One-Five at our Watts District Office. Having a record should not mean you have limited options. Stop by from 10 AM - 2 PM for expungements, legal assistance, ticket dismissal, and more.

MICROENTERPRISE RECOVERY

NOW OPEN! Round 2 applications for the "Microenterprise Recovery” grant program. Grants are up to $5,000 for eligible microenterprises in the City of LA that need financial assistance recovering from COVID-19.  To apply visit: bit.ly/MicroenterpriseGrant. If you need assistance with the application process, contact your local BusinessSource Center. Application closes on 12/10 at 11:59 PM (PST)!

OVERNIGHT CLOSURES ON VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE

According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), due to unanticipated construction delays and to the upcoming holiday season, the cable repair project on the Vincent Thomas Bridge is now anticipated to be completed in early January. Caltrans will continue to enforce nighttime closures with the exceptions of weekends and holiday periods. Each night the bridge, located on State Route 47 (SR 47), will close in one or both directions beginning as early as 8 PM and will reopen by 6 AM the following morning. The closures will allow crews to safely install cable safety upgrades. See graphic above for detour routes.

LA REPAIR

Calling all Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, and Wilmington residents! The L.A. REPAIR Grant Opportunity is now open! Community-based organizations and nonprofits are invited to turn the community's ideas into reality by submitting a program proposal. Qualifying proposals will be placed on a ballot for the REPAIR Zone community to vote on which to fund. Proposals are due by Wednesday, November 29th at 12 PM, so don't delay!

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL MEETING

On Wednesday evening I attended the Harbor City’s Neighborhood Council’s last meeting of 2023. I look forward to our continued partnership and working together even more in the next year!

ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEARED

Last week our Clean 15 Team was out cleaning up an illegal dumping across the street from President Ave. Elementary School. Please continue to report illegal dumping via MYLA311 and you can also call our office to report.

TURKEY GIVEAWAY

You’re invited to Harbor City Food Pantry’s 4th Annual Turkey Giveaway! Located at 1034 W. 252nd St., they will be out there on Wednesday at noon passing out turkeys until supplies run out.

186th STREET NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

This week our office joined the 186th St. Neighborhood Watch to discuss issues in the area as well as receive a crime report from LAPD. It was an excellent turnout of residents, and we thank and appreciate your engagement in your community!

PIRATES FLAG FOOTBALL WIN

Big win for San Pedro Pirates Wednesday night as the San Pedro Flag Football girls defeated Eagle Rock 20-19 in the CIF LA City Section Open Division Semifinals. Coming from behind, San Pedro scored a touchdown with 1:04 left and then successfully converted a two-point conversion to get the W! The championship game is TODAY at Birmingham in Lake Balboa at 4:30 PM. See you there to cheer on our Pirates!

ANDERSON SENIOR CENTER LUNCH

Yesterday, Connie and I went to the Anderson Senior Center to serve Thanksgiving lunch to Center participants. Everyone should have a warm thanksgiving meal and I was thrilled to carve the turkey and be a part of this special celebration!

STREET RESURFACING

This week the Bureau of Street Services was out on Miraflores Ave. at N. Gaffey resurfacing the road. Their work is not done though due to the rain and the road will still need to be striped but residents should expect a much smoother drive once finished!

OPERATION PROGRESS

On Monday evening, I was honored to speak to the 9th Grade cohort of Operation Progress at the Children’s Institute Watts campus. We talked about how creating pathways to internships and school clubs can have a great, positive impact on their futures. Operation Progress is a nonprofit organization in South LA that works with children and teens to build their toolbox of skills, relationships, mindsets, etc. to transcend socio-economic conditions. The future looks bright with these students knowing their dedication to their academics and their communities.

PARENT CENTER AT MARKHAM

Active, engaged parents help our students reach their goals and dreams - both in and out of the classroom. Wednesday morning, I joined LAUSD to cut the ribbon for a brand new parent center at Markham Middle School in Watts. This center will serve as a place where parents and families can learn about the school curriculum, communicating with teachers and school personnel, and ways to support their children's learning.

WATTS NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

On Wednesday I attended the Watts Neighborhood Council to hear updates from community partners as well as LAPD and LAFD. These council meetings are a great way to learn what is going on in your community, the next meeting is December 12 at the WLCAC Phoenix Hall.

TRAINING IN THE TRADES

On Monday, I toured the site of Los Angeles Education Corp. where they have training programs for various trades with opportunities to segue into union jobs or self-employment. Located at 9704 Holmes Ave. in Watts, they provide both classroom and hands-on experience for those seeking to get into a trade job.

DIASPORA DANCE PARTY

The Wilmington Waterfront Park served as our dance floor Sunday afternoon at the Diaspora Dance Party, an event featuring music of all cultural groups that call Los Angeles home. Thanks to Zócalo and all of the partners for giving us the space to be with each other in such a fun, welcoming space.

SIGNALS ON ANAHEIM

Lights are turning on along Anaheim! Last Thursday we were able to activate the intersection of Anaheim St. and Bay View Ave., and this Monday the lights on Anaheim St. and Marine Ave. are now fully operational.

NEW CROSSWALK & STOP SIGN

You may have noticed that we have a new stop sign on G St. and Fries Ave. this week! The rain delayed the painting of the crosswalk but that will be completed on Monday and I invite you to join me in a community event celebrating this traffic update at the corner of W. G St. and N. Fries Ave. on Monday, November 20 at 2:30 PM. See you there!

TREE TRIMMING

Thanks to the Bureau of Street Services’ Urban Forestry Division for trimming the trees on Gulf Ave. between Anaheim and G St. Trimming not only promotes tree health but it also protects the home and cars parking on the street.

A medida que nos acercamos al Día de Acción de Gracias y la temporada navideña, quiero tomarme un momento para agradecer a todos los trabajadores de nuestra ciudad por el trabajo incansable que realizan durante todo el año.

Mi corazón es de servidor público, de trabajador de la ciudad. Mi papá era bombero de la ciudad de Los Ángeles y uno de mis primeros trabajos fue como estudiante trabajador profesional en el Puerto de Los Ángeles. Reconozco que este trabajo es duro y tengo una gratitud infinita por las mujeres y los hombres que, día tras día, trabajan para nuestros electores.

El jueves mostramos nuestro agradecimiento con un almuerzo a nuestra fuerza laboral de la ciudad que sirve a One-Five y encarna toda la ética de One-Five: dedicada equitativamente y sirviendo a cada una de nuestras 5 comunidades. Desde Rec y Parques y LAPD hasta LAFD, DWP, Obras Públicas, Servicios para Animales y Asuntos Culturales, y todos nuestros departamentos municipales, nuestra fuerza laboral municipal es lo que mantiene a Los Ángeles en movimiento. Nuestros empleados se presentan todos los días para mejorar un poco la vida de alguien, brindar el mejor servicio y mejorar la vida de las personas en esta ciudad. Este almuerzo fue la oportunidad perfecta para mostrar nuestra profunda gratitud a los trabajadores de nuestra ciudad que sirven diligentemente a los residentes que conocen, a algunos que no conocen y a personas que quizás nunca conocerán, pero todo en un esfuerzo por mejorar nuestra ciudad.

Y, en el espíritu del Día de Acción de Gracias, quiero agradecer a los residentes del One-Five. Gracias por mantenerse comprometido, aportar ideas y trabajar para hacer que nuestras 5 comunidades sean tan grandiosas. Estoy en este papel por ustedes  y para ustedes, y por eso estaré eternamente agradecido.

A través de nuestros procesos presupuestarios y legislativos, hemos brindado ayuda para que los propietarios se recuperen económicamente y mantener a los inquilinos en sus hogares. Esta semana, el Consejo votó sobre aumentos de alquiler a partir de febrero para quienes viven en unidades RSO (Ordenanza de estabilización de alquileres). El Consejo votó para permitir que los propietarios aumenten el alquiler en un 4% y hasta un 6% si el propietario paga los servicios públicos del edificio. Presenté una enmienda a la moción para que el Fiscal Municipal y el LAHD informaran para establecer cuáles serían los aumentos de alquiler permitidos para los pequeños proveedores de viviendas. Este programa puede incluir una disposición programada de actualización, consistente con la ordenanza RSO existente. Siempre he dicho que debemos mantener a los inquilinos en sus casas, pero también debemos mantener a los propietarios familiares en el negocio del alquiler. Lo último que queremos es que las grandes corporaciones tomen el control de nuestras unidades RSO locales.

CENTRO DE ENTRENAMIENTO ILWU

El miércoles, hice un recorrido por las instalaciones de capacitación en mantenimiento y reparación de PMA/ILWU, actualmente en construcción en el Muelle 400. La vicepresidenta de la Comisión Portuaria, Diane Middleton, el presidente del Local 13 de ILWU, Gary Herrera, el personal del puerto y representantes de la PMA estuvieron presentes para ver el progreso. A medida que las operaciones portuarias continúan la transición hacia tecnologías limpias y sostenibles, es imperativo que abogamos por conservar los buenos empleos que tenemos y volver a capacitar y mejorar las habilidades de nuestros trabajadores en los nuevos equipos. Este centro capacitará a los trabajadores para adaptar, mantener y reparar tecnologías de cero emisiones de manera eficiente y productiva.

CLÍNICA DE ELIMINACIÓN DE ANTECEDENTES PENALES

Su pasado no debería dictar su futuro, pero, trágicamente, sí lo es para muchos estadounidenses. El 4 de diciembre, organizaremos una clínica de eliminación de antecedentes penales en el One-Five en nuestra oficina del distrito de Watts. RECUPERACIÓN DE MICROEMPRESAS

CIERRES NOCTURNOS EN EL PUENTE VINCENT THOMAS

Según el Departamento de Transporte de California (Caltrans), debido a retrasos imprevistos en la construcción y a la próxima temporada navideña, se prevé que el proyecto de reparación del cable en el puente Vincent Thomas esté terminado a principios de enero. Caltrans continuará imponiendo cierres nocturnos con excepción de los fines de semana y períodos festivos. Cada noche, el puente, ubicado en la ruta estatal 47 (SR 47), se cerrará en una o ambas direcciones a partir de las 8 PM y volverá a abrir a las 6 AM del día siguiente. Los cierres permitirán a las cuadrillas instalar de forma segura mejoras de seguridad de los cables. Consulte la gráfica de arriba para conocer las rutas de desvío.

LA REPAIR

¡Hacemos un llamado a todos los residentes de Harbor Gateway, Harbor City y Wilmington! ¡La oportunidad de la subvención L.A. REPAIR ya está abierta! Se invita a las organizaciones comunitarias y sin fines de lucro a convertir las ideas de la comunidad en realidad mediante la presentación de una propuesta de programa. Las propuestas calificadas se colocarán en una boleta para que la comunidad de LA REPAIR Zone vote sobre cuál financiar. Las propuestas deben entregarse antes del miércoles 29 de noviembre a las 12 PM, ¡así que no se demore!

GRUPO DE VIGILANCIA VECINAL DE LA CALLE 186

El jueves nuestra oficina se unió a la Vigilancia Vecinal de la Calle 186 para discutir problemas en el área y recibir un informe sobre delitos del Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles. ¡Fue una excelente participación de residentes y agradecemos y alentamos su participación en su comunidad!

ELIMINACIÓN DE VERTIDOS ILEGALES

Esta semana se despejó un basurero ilegal en la calle 117. Continúe denunciando vertidos ilegales a través de MYLA311. Si tiene artículos voluminosos como un sofá o un refrigerador, ¡también puede programar una recogida sin costo!

ENTREGA DE COMIDA DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS

¡Acompáñenos el martes 21 de noviembre de 10:30 AM a 12:30 PM a la distribución anual de alimentos de Acción de Gracias por parte de Harbor Gateway-Torrance Outreach.

VICTORIA EN EL FÚTBOL CON BANDERA

Gran victoria para los Piratas de San Pedro el miércoles por la noche cuando las chicas de San Pedro Flag Football derrotaron a Eagle Rock por 20-19 en las Semifinales de la División Abierta de la Sección CIF LA City. Viniendo de atrás, San Pedro anotó un touchdown con 1:04 por jugarse y luego convirtió exitosamente una conversión de dos puntos para obtener la victoria. El partido de campeonato es hoy en Lake Balboa a las 4:30 PM. ¡Nos vemos ahí para animar a nuestros Piratas!

ALMUERZO EN EL CENTRO PARA PERSONAS MAYORES ANDERSON

Ayer, Connie y yo fuimos al Centro para personas mayores Anderson para servir el almuerzo de Acción de Gracias a los participantes del Centro. ¡Todos deberían disfrutar de una comida caliente de acción de gracias y ayer yo estuve encantado de cortar el pavo y ser parte de esta celebración especial!

RENOVACIÓN DE CALLES

Esta semana, la Oficina de Servicios de la Calle estuvo en la Avenida Miraflores en N. Gaffey repavimentando la calle. Sin embargo, su trabajo no ha terminado debido a la lluvia y aún será necesario marcar la carretera, pero los residentes ya tendrán un viaje mucho más suave una vez terminado.

OPERACIÓN PROGRESO

El lunes por la noche, tuve el honor de hablar ante el grupo de noveno grado de Operación Progreso en el campus Watts del Children's Institute. Hablamos sobre cómo crear caminos hacia pasantías y clubes escolares puede tener un gran impacto positivo en su futuro. Operation Progress es una organización sin fines de lucro en el sur de Los Ángeles que trabaja con niños y adolescentes para desarrollar su caja de herramientas de habilidades, relaciones, mentalidades, etc. para trascender las condiciones socioeconómicas. El futuro parece brillante si estos estudiantes conocen su dedicación a sus estudios y sus comunidades.

CENTRO DE PADRES EN MARKHAM

Los padres activos y comprometidos ayudan a nuestros estudiantes a alcanzar sus metas y sueños, tanto dentro como fuera del aula. El miércoles por la mañana, me uní al LAUSD para cortar el listón de un nuevo centro para padres en la escuela secundaria Markham en Watts. Este centro servirá como un lugar donde los padres y las familias podrán aprender sobre el plan de estudios escolar, comunicarse con los maestros y el personal escolar y formas de apoyar el aprendizaje de sus hijos.

CONSEJO VECINAL

El miércoles asistí al Consejo Vecinal de Watts para escuchar actualizaciones de socios comunitarios, así como de LAPD y LAFD. Estas reuniones del consejo son una excelente manera de conocer lo que está sucediendo en su comunidad. La próxima reunión es el 12 de diciembre en el WLCAC Phoenix Hall.

ENTRENAMIENTO DE OFICIOS

El lunes, visité el sitio de Los Angeles Education Corp., donde tienen programas de capacitación para diversos oficios con oportunidades para acceder a empleos sindicales o por cuenta propia. Ubicados en el 9704 Holmes Ave. en Watts, brindan experiencia práctica y en el aula para quienes buscan obtener un trabajo comercial.

BAILE DE LA DIÁSPORA

El Wilmington Waterfront Park sirvió como nuestra pista de baile el domingo por la tarde en la Diaspora Dance Party, un evento que presenta música de todos los grupos culturales que consideran a Los Ángeles su hogar. Gracias al Zócalo y a todos los socios por brindarnos el espacio para estar juntos en un espacio tan divertido y acogedor.

SEMÁFOROS ENCENDIDOS EN ANAHEIM

¡Las luces se encienden a lo largo de Anaheim! El jueves pasado pudimos activar la intersección de Anaheim St. y Bay View Ave., y desde el lunes los semáforos de Anaheim St. y Marine Ave. ya están en pleno funcionamiento.

SEÑAL DE STOP

¡Es posible que haya notado esta semana que ya tenemos una nueva señal de alto en G St. y Fries Ave.! La lluvia retrasó la pintura del cruce peatonal, pero se completará el lunes y los invito a que me acompañen a celebrar esta actualización de tráfico en la esquina de W. G St. y N. Fries Ave. El evento comunitario será el lunes 20 de noviembre a las 2:30 PM. ¡Los veo ahi!

PODA DE ÁRBOLES

Gracias a la División de Silvicultura Urbana de la Oficina de Servicios de Calle por podar los árboles en Gulf Ave. entre Anaheim y G St. La poda no sólo promueve la salud de los árboles sino que también protege la casa y los automóviles que se estacionan en la calle.
