Dear friends, fam, and allies,

We had the pleasure of doing our very first Neighborhood Distribution Tabling Event in Pico-Union on December 9th! Thank you to Irma Juarez for filling out our Neighborhood Pail Distribution Form and inviting us out to distribute pails in front of her business: Healthy Protein Nutrition.

You can invite Fellows to your neighborhood to host a kitchen compost pail distribution in CD1 by filling out this form. If you don't live in CD1, we can help you find a neighborhood in CD1 that’s closest to you and table/canvass in the area. By volunteering with us, you can help us reach our goal of distributing 10,000 pails!
The fellows had the opportunity to host an educational event for the incredible seniors at Glassell Park Senior Center! Seniors learned about the impact of climate change and ways they can implement climate action into their everyday lives, including participating in the OrganicsLA program. If you're interested in volunteering at events like these, sign up below.
Volunteer with us!
Let's get it fam!

Every choice we make has repercussions in our lives- small and large- on our community, on our Earth. Little things ripple into larger things. That’s how life and our ecosystem works, right?

One way I learned how we can help is to choose clean sunscreen when swimming in rivers, lakes and the ocean- it will make a difference. We brought sunscreen that we thought was clean, but it has chemicals that destroy sea life! Our sea life and coral reefs are deeply impacted by human activities and waste, including plastic pollution, chemical waste and the detergents/sunscreens we use. Check out this list of clean sunscreen options by The Surfrider Foundation.
On my recent trip, I forgot to pack my stainless steel water bottle, but my daughter, learning from me, did bring one on the trip and it saved us from buying water! Plastic pollution is real. The major contribution we can make everyday is to reduce plastic use and lower our carbon footprint. That includes reusable plastics in my opinion, but any reduction in plastic is a WIN.
  1. Use a refillable bottle throughout the trip, everyday even. You save plastic and money!
  2. Pass on using a straw or using a reusable straw when dining out.
  3. Purchase bars of soap versus bottled body wash and pass on using the free toiletries in hotels. This simple action can cut into the nearly 1 million plastic bottles of body wash/shampoo used annually.
  4. Use reusable shopping totes, preferably of canvas or other reusable material to cut down on plastic bags. IMO, even the heavy duty plastic bags introduce more plastic in our environment and are not better - they are not 100% recyclable or compostable.
  5. Choosing products that have little to no packaging, especially plastic packaging, and/or that is made of sustainable paper that is easily recycled or reused. Not all plastics are recyclable, so manufacturers will (hopefully) catch on that their packaging needs to be sustainable in order for consumers to buy their products. Consider toothpaste tablets instead of tubes. Shampoo bars instead of bottles.
