To me, holidays are about being in our communities with friends and family and taking a little extra time to spend with each other. The holidays give us an opportunity to gather with those we love and care about and express our appreciation for them. It’s a time of thanks and gratitude and also for giving!

As the Councilmember for the One-Five, I am honored to provide you with that opportunity to come together in celebration, joy, and cheer. As of today we’ve held 5 of our 8 Winter Wonderland events including in Harbor Gateway, San Pedro, Watts, and Wilmington. Tonight we’ll be at Peck Park, next weekend at Harbor City Recreation Center, and lastly in Harbor Gateway South at the Cheryl Green Boys and Girls Club.

Together we’ve lit holiday trees, said hi to Santa Claus, and sledded on real snow! Seeing our kids’ beaming smiles, dressed in their snow clothes or holiday outfits, sliding down the snow on their sleds has filled me with joy and gratitude of being able to bring this type of fun to our 5 communities.

Beyond the Winter Wonderlands we’re throwing, there are tons of great events happening over the month and I’m looking forward to seeing you there and celebrating this time together.

I also want to wish those celebrating Hanukkah over the next few days a very happy festival of lights filled with loved ones.

The Al Fresco program and outdoor dining kept our local restaurants afloat during the worst of the pandemic when people were still unable to dine-in at restaurants. It was an effective, creative solution. Yesterday we approved a motion to codify the Al Fresco program which will come back for a full vote on the ordinance. I also introduced an amendment to make it easier for small businesses to qualify for Al Fresco by removing the complicated requirements for parking spaces - especially for restaurants 3,000 sq ft. or smaller.

CITY SERVICES

On Monday morning, I stood with Mayor Bass as we both approach our one year mark in office to discuss the city services and our essential city workers. We have vacancies across our departments, but since Day 1 Mayor Bass and I, in my role as Chair of the Personnel Committee, have been dedicated to filling these critical positions. The city has hired more than 2,000 workers this year and we’ve held 3 career fairs in the One-Five, with more to come.

From trimming trees to repairing sidewalks, these are city services that require more than just putting money in the budget – we need the women and men who do the work. We are grateful for all of the long days and overtime work that our city employees do to keep our city running and we are dedicated to hiring more Angelenos to fill these great union jobs.

ILWU TOY DRIVE

On Saturday morning I joined the ILWU Longshore Brotherhood and their families and friends for their 3rd Annual Toy Drive. We collected and began wrapping toys to give to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the LA Harbor! Thank you Roman, Steve and MC Pancho for giving me the opportunity to support so that our One-Five kids can have a great holiday season!

LA CITY YOUTH COUNCIL

The Olivia Mitchell LA City Youth Council seats 30 youth from across the City who serve a one-year term. During their term, they learn about the inner workings of local government, drive special community projects and civic events, and make policy and budget recommendations to elected and civic leaders of the City to uplift the lives of young Angelenos. Yesterday we honored the second cohort and I want to give a special shout of appreciation to Fantayjah and Enrique for their dedication as the One-Five representatives!

The ONE•FIVE is made up of 5 distinct communities that add so much to our district. See below for specific updates for each of the neighborhoods.

WESTERN LANDING

The crisis of our unhoused population is one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time. We need fast, creative solutions - like these modular developments, which can more quickly deliver much needed housing for our City. I’m grateful to the public-private partnership with Abode Communities, which will give residents of Western Landing not just a home, but also life changing supportive services to build a new future.

SIDEWALK CLEAN UP

Thanks to GAP for cleaning up this area on Frampton Ave. near Anaheim St. so that this sidewalk is accessible for pedestrians!

TRAFFIC IMPACTS FOR PIPELINE IMPROVEMENT

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is making improvements to a vital water delivery pipeline known as the Second Lower Feeder. Potential impacts near the project area could include temporary traffic delays, lane closures, and parking restrictions. See graphics above for closures and restrictions. WINTER WONDERLAND AT THE ENCLAVE

Our weekend of Winter Wonderlands continued at the brand new Enclave in the Gateway on Thursday! We had a special guest this week, the LA Kings’ mascot Bailey the Lion and ball hockey and puck shoot from the LA Kings. We also had a tree lighting, sledding, and Santa!

NEW DISTRICT OFFICE

We have a new District Office at the Enclave, the very first ever District Office in Harbor Gateway. This will be a space for me to meet with Gateway residents close to home and hold community meetings. It is open by appointment only so call 310.732.4515 to schedule!

NORMANDALE WINTER EVENT

Don’t forget to join us next Saturday, December 15th at the Normandale Recreation Center to celebrate the Holidays with Santa, arts and crafts, a toy drive and more! This event is free and is sure to be a good time!

OPEN STUDIO DAY

Last weekend I attended Open Studio Day at Angels Gate Cultural Center to tour open galleries belonging to artists from our community. Members of the Teen Mural Club were painting and I had the opportunity to hear from Director of Arts Education, Marissa Sykes, who shared the successes of the pilot program which launched just this year. It was a great afternoon and I’m looking forward to the next Open Studio Day in the Spring.

TIMMI’S RETURN TO SEA

In September I took a tour of the Marine Mammal Care Center with Councilmember Park and met a sea lion I was honored to name “Timmi.” Timmi was hospitalized at the center for a parasitic infection and thanks to the care and attention by the incredible staff at the Center, on Thursday we celebrated her return back to the ocean! Timmi and Hope were the 10,000th treated by the Marine Mammal Care Center, each time a special reminder about the importance of taking care of each other and our environment.

WINTER WONDERLAND BUS ROUTE

Continuous bus service will be provided this afternoon, December 9th for our Winter Wonderland event with transportation to and from Peck Park. Service will go from 3 PM to 8:15 PM. Pickup/Drop-off points include Rancho San Pedro at 275 W. 1st Street and Toberman Neighborhood Center at 131 N. Grand Ave.

HOLIDAYS BY THE SEA

The holidays are officially here in the Harbor! On Saturday night I was honored to be the Grand Marshal of the Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade celebrating the theme “Light Up The Holidays” and traveling from the Maritime Museum along the Main Channel. On Sunday, Connie and I started with the San Pedro Spirit of the Holidays Parade, a tradition that brings families, little leagues, scouts, students, high school bands and more to downtown San Pedro to celebrate the holiday season and our community. It may have been the biggest Spirit of the Holidays Parade yet! From there I went to Holidays by the Sea on the Waterfront where we had local vendors and food and of course sledding!

ONE-FIVE EXPUNGEMENT CLINIC

On Monday, we held our first One-Five Expungement Clinic in the Watts District Office! There are too many unnecessary barriers to employment and housing which is why we partnered with Beauty Behind the Bricks, the LA County Public Defender's Office and the City Attorney’s Office to clean up people’s records, clear tickets, and more. One’s past should not impair a successful future but sadly it does for too many. Monday’s event also featured workforce and career resources, and we plan to do more of these events throughout the One-Five.

KAISER PERMANENTE TOUR

This week I took a tour of the updates made to the new Kaiser Permanente building on 103rd St. and Success Ave. This new building will offer a range of amenities to the residents of Watts and surrounding communities, including new medical services; expanded counseling, education, and preschool services; an open-air play yard; community rooms; and a public plaza.

WINTER WONDERLAND

What a turn out for the Watts Winter Wonderland! We shut down 103rd St. from Success to Compton Ave. for sledding, local vendors, and the guest of honor… Santa Claus! We had great performances by the Jordan High School Band, the Sisters of Watts Choir, and the Watts Rams Cheerleaders! It was a joy to see so many of our community members come out to celebrate the holiday season!

TREE PLANTING

We planted 62 trees by Weigand Avenue Elementary School with Watts Raising and TreePeople on Saturday morning. Watts Rising’s Transformative Climate Communities grant funded TreePeople to implement Watts Cool Schools which has removed asphalt to plant trees and other biodiversity to reduce heat at the school, while also increasing students’ exposure to outdoor learning and environmental subjects and careers.

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS

It was a very Victorian Christmas at the Banning Museum on Saturday. This incredible annual celebration is so special during the holidays with the grounds and house transformed into a Christmas festival during the Victorian era, with blacksmith demonstrations, horse-drawn trolley rides, and local food and craft vendors. Already looking forward to next year! Thank you as always to the Friends of the Banning Museum for putting on this great event!

MEASURE RR FUNDING

Our office joined the community at Wilmington Middle School for an update on Measure RR. The measure includes funding for new wellness centers and one of them is planned inside Wilmington Middle School.

WILMINGTON HOLIDAY EVENTS

There are two great holiday events happening this weekend! Today is the 2nd Annual A Merry Cemetery at the Historic Wilmington Cemetery with grave decorations from 11 AM to 4 PM and a tree lighting at 5:30 PM. We will also be at ​​the 36th Annual Heart of the Harbor Holiday Parade tomorrow on Avalon Blvd. from F to M St. See you there!

Para mí, las vacaciones se tratan de estar en nuestras comunidades con amigos y familiares y tomarnos un poco más de tiempo para estar juntos. Las fiestas nos brindan la oportunidad de reunirnos con aquellos que amamos y nos importan y expresarles nuestro aprecio. ¡Es un momento de agradecimiento y gratitud y también de dar!

¡Juntos hemos encendido árboles navideños, saludamos a Papá Noel y nos hemos deslizado en trineos sobre nieve real! El programa Al Fresco y las comidas al aire libre mantuvieron a flote nuestros restaurantes locales durante lo peor de la pandemia, cuando la gente aún no podía cenar en los restaurantes. Fue una solución eficaz y creativa. Ayer aprobamos una moción para codificar el programa Al Fresco que volverá para una votación completa sobre la ordenanza. También presenté una enmienda para facilitar que las pequeñas empresas califiquen para Al Fresco eliminando los complicados requisitos para los espacios de estacionamiento, especialmente para restaurantes de 3000 pies cuadrados o menos.

SERVICIOS DE LA CIUDAD

El lunes por la mañana, estuve con la alcaldesa Bass mientras ambos nos acercamos a nuestro primer año en el cargo para hablar sobre los servicios de la ciudad y nuestros trabajadores municipales esenciales. Tenemos vacantes en todos nuestros departamentos, pero desde el día 1, la alcaldesa Bass y yo, en mi función de presidente del Comité de Personal, nos hemos dedicado a cubrir estos puestos críticos. La ciudad ha contratado a más de 2,000 trabajadores este año y hemos celebrado 3 ferias profesionales en el One-Five, y habrá más por venir.

Desde la poda de árboles hasta la reparación de aceras, estos son servicios urbanos que requieren algo más que simplemente poner dinero en el presupuesto: necesitamos mujeres y hombres que hagan el trabajo. Estamos agradecidos por todas las largas jornadas y horas extras que hacen los empleados de nuestra ciudad para mantener nuestra ciudad en funcionamiento y estamos dedicados a contratar más angelinos para ocupar estos excelentes puestos sindicales.

COLECTA DE JUGUETES ILWU

El sábado por la mañana me uní a la Hermandad de Estibadores de ILWU y a sus familias y amigos para su tercera colecta anual de juguetes. ¡Recolectamos y comenzamos a envolver juguetes para regalarlos a los Boys and Girls Clubs del LA Harbor la próxima semana! ¡Gracias Roman, Steve y MC Pancho por darme la oportunidad de apoyar para que nuestros niños del One-Five puedan tener unas excelentes fiestas navideñas!

CONSEJO JUVENIL

El Consejo Juvenil de la ciudad de Los Ángeles Olivia Mitchell tiene capacidad para 30 jóvenes de toda la ciudad que sirven por un período de un año. Durante su mandato, aprenden sobre el funcionamiento interno del gobierno local, impulsan proyectos comunitarios especiales y eventos cívicos, y hacen recomendaciones de políticas y presupuestos a los líderes cívicos y electos de la ciudad para mejorar las vidas de los jóvenes angelinos. ¡Ayer honramos a la segunda cohorte y quiero darle un agradecimiento especial a Fantayjah y Enrique por su dedicación como representantes de One-Five!

WINTER WONDERLAND

OPEN STUDIO DAY

El fin de semana pasado asistí al Open Studio Day (Día del Estudio Abierto) en el Centro Cultural Angels Gate para recorrer galerías abiertas pertenecientes a artistas de nuestra comunidad. Los miembros del Teen Mural Club estuvieron pintando. Tuve la oportunidad de escuchar a la Directora de Educación Artística, Marissa Sykes, quien compartió los éxitos del programa piloto que se lanzó este año. Fue una gran tarde y espero que llegue el próximo Open Studio Day en la primavera.

EL REGRESO DE TIMMI AL MAR

En septiembre hice un recorrido por el Centro de Atención de Mamíferos Marinos con el Concejal Park y conocí a un león marino al que tuve el honor de llamar “Timmi”. Timmi fue hospitalizada en el centro por una infección parasitaria y gracias al cuidado y atención del increíble personal del Centro, ¡el jueves celebramos su regreso al océano! Timmi y Hope fueron los animales número 10.000 tratados en el Marine Mammal Care Center, cada vez un recordatorio especial sobre la importancia de cuidarnos unos a otros y a nuestro medio ambiente.

VACACIONES JUNTO AL MAR

¡Las vacaciones están oficialmente aquí en el puerto! El sábado por la noche tuve el honor de ser el Gran Mariscal del Desfile a flote del Puerto de Los Ángeles, que celebraba el tema “Iluminando las fiestas” y viaje desde el Museo Marítimo a lo largo del Canal Principal. El domingo, Connie y yo comenzamos con el Desfile del Espíritu de las Fiestas de San Pedro, una tradición que trae familias, ligas menores, exploradores, estudiantes, bandas de escuelas secundarias y más al centro de San Pedro para celebrar la temporada navideña y nuestra comunidad. ¡Puede que haya sido el desfile del Espíritu de las Fiestas más grande hasta ahora! De ahí fui a Holidays by the Sea on the Waterfront, donde teníamos vendedores locales, comida y, por supuesto, paseos en trineo.

CLÍNICA DE EXPUGNACIÓN DEL ONE-FIVE

¡El lunes celebramos nuestra primera clínica de eliminación de antecedentes penales del One-Five en la oficina del distrito de Watts! Hay demasiadas barreras innecesarias al empleo y la vivienda, por eso nos asociamos con Beauty Behind the Bricks, la Oficina del Defensor Público del Condado de Los Ángeles y la Oficina del Fiscal de la Ciudad para limpiar los registros de las personas, eliminar multas y más. El pasado de uno no debería perjudicar un futuro exitoso, pero lamentablemente sí lo es para muchos. GIRA DEL KAISER PERMANENTE

Esta semana hice un recorrido por las actualizaciones realizadas en el nuevo edificio de Kaiser Permanente en 103rd St. y Success Ave. Este nuevo edificio ofrecerá una variedad de comodidades a los residentes de Watts y las comunidades circundantes, incluyendo nuevos servicios médicos; servicios ampliados de asesoramiento, educación y preescolar; un patio de juegos al aire libre; salas comunitarias; y una plaza pública.

WINTER WONDERLAND

¡Qué resultado para Watts Winter Wonderland! ¡Cerramos la calle 103 para paseos en trineos, feria de recursos, vendedores locales y el invitado de honor, Santa Claus! ¡Comenzamos el evento con la Jordan High School Band, una actuación de las Hermanas de Watts y las porristas de Watts Rams! Fue un placer ver a tantos miembros de nuestra comunidad salir a celebrar la temporada navideña.

PLANTA DE ÁRBOLES

MEDIDA DE FINANCIACIÓN RR

Nuestra oficina asistió a la Escuela Intermedia Wilmington para recibir una actualización sobre la Medida RR. La medida incluye financiación para nuevos centros de bienestar y uno de ellos está previsto dentro de Wilmington Middle School.

EVENTOS DE VACACIONES EN WILMINGTON

¡Hay dos grandes eventos festivos este fin de semana! Hoy es el segundo evento anual navideño en el cementerio histórico de Wilmington con decoraciones para tumbas de las 11 a.m. a 4 p.m. e iluminación del árbol a las 5:30 p.m. También estaremos en el 36º Desfile Navideño Anual de Heart of the Harbor mañana en Avalon Blvd. de F a M St. ¡Nos vemos ahí!
