Last Saturday, Connie and I traveled throughout the One-Five as we celebrated Small Business Saturday. We have great local businesses in the One-Five and by shopping locally we are investing directly in our communities: creating jobs for our neighbors and contributing to the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

We started the day checking out the bikes at Watts Cyclery, stopped by Ambassadors Shop of Watts to see their screen printing business, then met the owners of Tortacos Cansado Del Camino, a delicious food truck around the corner from our Watts District Office.

From there we stopped by the Tamale Man in Harbor Gateway for a flavorful and hearty Super Tamale. Next, we visited Luzila Naquiat at 3 Brothers Restaurant in Harbor City and congratulated Luz for 18 years of successful ownership.

Making our way further down the One-Five, we went to Avalon Blvd. to present a certificate to Alfredo Martinez and The Hall cafe/restaurant, visited the Synesthesia Boutique, and the pop ups on Avalon Blvd. including Trinity Coffee Roaster.

We ended the day in San Pedro at the Small Business Saturday Community event which showcased local vendors including live screen printing by Calimucho and Wood-fired pizzas by Miller Butler. Finally, we finished at House 1002, one of our favorite antique/unique shops.

Thank you to everyone in the One-Five who made it a point to shop local and support small businesses last Saturday and for all of you who continue to invest in uplifting our community.

The Trade, Travel, and Tourism Committee held a special meeting on Monday in the Harbor on the APM Terminal Pier 400 driverless electric cargo handlers. I am unequivocally opposed to automation that eliminates jobs, and I will never agree that we are forced to choose between protecting the environment or the workforce. We must make urgent course corrections on climate change, but not at the expense of good union jobs. It’s clear to me that the underlying commitment made in 2019 to improve the environment is unrealized. I have asked for further reports to monitor APM to ensure that it upholds its commitments to environmental sustainability, and I will continue to work to protect our port jobs from the threat of automation.

CLEAN 15

WINTER WONDERLAND IN THE ONE-FIVE

We’ve got a LOT of holiday events coming up over the next month as we celebrate the Winter Holiday season! We have events throughout the One-Five that will be fun for the entire family - filled with tree lightings, snow play, sledding, and more! See the flyers above for this upcoming week’s Wonderland events.

ONE-FIVE EXPUNGEMENT CLINIC

Your past shouldn’t dictate your future but tragically, it does for too many. On Monday, December 4th, we will be hosting an expungement clinic in the One-Five at our Watts District Office. Having a record should not mean you have limited options. Stop by from 10 AM - 2 PM for expungements, legal assistance, ticket dismissal, and more.

The ONE•FIVE is made up of 5 distinct communities that add so much to our district. See below for specific updates for each of the neighborhoods.

SIDEWALK POWER WASH

Our office noticed a very dirty sidewalk that hundreds of students pass daily. We reached out to Public Works Wastewater Collection Services Division and it was power washed within 24 hrs. If you see a sidewalk that needs attention please reach out to our offices and we can have that area cleaned.

NEW SIDEWALK

The Department of Public Works has been hard at work installing a new sidewalk on Vermont at Normandie Ave. This project is set to be completed by next week.

BULKY ITEM COLLECTION

This weekend our office is sponsoring a community bulky item collection in the Harbor City Pines area. Please remember no chemicals or construction materials are permitted. Please put items towards the back. Block captains are advised on bin locations.

WINTER WONDERLAND

We started the winter holiday season Thursday with our very first One-Five Winter Wonderland in Harbor Gateway North at the Gardena Blvd. Boys and Girls Club! We had a special appearance by Santa and a performance by the Boys & Girls Club. Thank you to everyone who came out. It’s safe to say the sledding was a hit! We have 2 more Winter Wonderland events in the Gateway coming up this month on December 7th at the Enclave and in Harbor Gateway South at Cheryl Green Boys & Girls Club on December 19th.

FOOD DRIVE

This past week, our office participated in the Janet Horst Gateway Food Drive held by the Harbor Gateway Torrance Outreach. Over 100 families attended and received food. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped distribute food to our community members!

NORMANDALE WINTER SHOWCASE

Please join us on Saturday December 15th at Normandale Recreation Center to celebrate the Holidays with Santa, arts and crafts, a toy drive and more! This event is free and is sure to be a good time!

ELIMINATING GRAFFITI

Last weekend, vandals defaced the Pt. Fermin Park Bandshell, bathrooms and outbuildings with a massive amount of graffiti. Thanks to the San Pedro CPR Volunteers who jumped quickly into action on Sunday and our Rec and Parks paint crew on Monday, we were able to paint over the graffiti. Thank you to our volunteers and our excellent city crews, who are stretched thin, but eager to make our parks beautiful.

CANDY CANE LANE

For 37 years the Candy Cane Lane at Weymouth Corners has been an important part of the Harbor Holiday tradition. It was a great event where stores stayed open after hours, musical entertainment, and a surprise appearance from Santa from the North Pole for a visit!

WINTER WONDERLAND BUS ROUTE

Continuous bus service will be provided on Sunday, December 9th for our Winter Wonderland event with transportation to and from Peck Park. Service will go from 3:00 PM to 8:15 PM. Pickup/Drop-off points include Rancho San Pedro at 275 W. 1st St. and Toberman Neighborhood Center at 131 N. Grand Ave.

WOMEN IN HYDROGEN AT ALTASEA

Earlier this month I attended the Women in the Hydrogen Revolution event at AltaSea which highlighted the pivotal role women play in shaping the future of clean energy and positive change in our society. We set big goals for making the Port of LA sustainable and I’m grateful to all of the speakers at the event, AltaSea, and so many others for being partners in this heroic effort.

JORDAN FOOTBALL PEP RALLY

Congratulations to the Jordan High Bulldogs - CIF City Div. III Champions! On Thursday, I was thrilled to be at Jordan High for a pep rally for Saturday night’s CIF regional bowl game this evening!

SPANISH SOUTHEAST COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD

Thank you to everyone who attended the final meeting of this year. Attendees received updates from LAPD, my office, as well as from the Mayor's Office. We encourage our bilingual as well as Spanish speaking residents in Watts to attend when they start back up in January at St. Lawrence of Brandissi.

ACCESS RAMP INSTALLATION

The Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Street Services has begun construction on access ramps on Wilmington Ave. They completed the first corner on 106th and are continuing through 103rd St. Temporary no parking signs may be posted, and a lane may be closed at times to help facilitate construction.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Thank you to our Wilmington community for coming out to Winter Wonderland in the Wilmington Town Square Park. Together we enjoyed the snow, sledding, Santa, and lit the tree to get into the holiday spirit! Make sure to save the date and join us Sunday, December 10th for the 36th Annual Heart of the Harbor Holiday Parade on Avalon Blvd. from F to M St. See you there!

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

After the tragic death of Juan Areyan on July 3rd from a speeding vehicle, my office worked with his family and the LA Department of Transportation to put in a 4-way stop sign on G St. and Fries Ave. Two weeks ago the Department installed the sign and last Monday, with the Areyan family and Wilmington community members, we walked across the freshly painted crosswalk in remembrance of Juan - a father, husband, and friend to many in our Wilmington community.

FALLEN TREE

A large tree fell in Banning Park on Monday and thanks to Urban Forestry, we were able to have it removed on Wednesday morning. Unfortunately the tree ruined part of the basketball court so we are working with the Department of Recreation and Parks to get that fixed as soon as possible.

BANNING HIGH FOOTBALL CHAMPS

Last weekend I went to check out Banning High School seal a win for the Division I City CIF title. With a late long drive and a dramatic interception as the clock ran out, I was proud to be in the stands with our Wilmington community to celebrate the Pilots on another Championship. They play this evening against La Jolla Country Day, go Pilots!

El sábado pasado, Connie y yo viajamos por el One-Five mientras celebramos el Sábado de las Pequeñas Empresas. Tenemos excelentes negocios locales en el One-Five y al comprar localmente estamos invirtiendo directamente en nuestras comunidades: creando empleos para nuestros vecinos y contribuyendo a la calidad de vida en nuestros vecindarios.

Connie y yo disfrutamos de una muestra de algunos de los grandes negocios locales. Comenzamos el día visitando Cyclery, un negocio de bicicletas en Watts, pasamos por Ambassadors Shop of Watts para ver su negocio de serigrafía y luego conocimos a los propietarios de Tortacos Cansado Del Camino, un delicioso camión de comida a la vuelta de la esquina de nuestra oficina del distrito de Watts.

Finalmente, terminamos en House 1002, una de nuestras tiendas de antigüedades/únicas favoritas.

El Comité de Comercio, Viajes y Turismo llevó a cabo una reunión especial el lunes en el Puerto en el APM Terminal Pier 400 driverless electric cargo handlers. Me opongo rotundamente a la automatización que elimina puestos de trabajo y nunca estaré de acuerdo en que nos veamos obligados a elegir entre proteger el medio ambiente o la fuerza laboral. Debemos hacer correcciones urgentes en el rumbo del cambio climático, pero no a expensas de buenos empleos sindicales. Para mí está claro que el compromiso subyacente asumido en 2019 de mejorar el medio ambiente no se ha cumplido. He solicitado más informes para monitorear a APM y garantizar que cumpla con sus compromisos con la sostenibilidad ambiental, y continuaré trabajando para proteger nuestros empleos portuarios de la amenaza de la automatización.

CLÍNICA DE ELIMINACIÓN DE ANTECEDENTES EN EL ONE-FIVE

Su pasado no debería dictar su futuro, pero, trágicamente, sí lo es para muchos estadounidenses. El lunes 4 de diciembre, organizaremos una clínica de eliminación de antecedentes penales en el One-Five en nuestra oficina del distrito de Watts. Tener un historial no debería significar que tenga opciones limitadas. Visítenos de 10 AM a 2 PM para la eliminación de antecedentes penales, asistencia legal, desestimación de multas y más.

LAVADO A PRESIÓN DE LA BANQUETA

Durante nuestro recorrido semanal, nuestra oficina notó una banqueta muy sucia por la que pasan cientos de estudiantes a diario. Nos pusimos en contacto con el Departmento de Obras Pública, División de Servicios de Recolección de Aguas Residuales y se lavó a presión en 24 horas. Si ve una banqueta que necesita atención, comuníquese con nuestras oficinas y podremos limpiar esa área.

NUEVA BANQUETA

El Departamento de Obras Públicas ha estado trabajando arduamente instalando una nueva banqueta en Vermont por la Avenida Normandie. Este proyecto estará terminado para la próxima semana.

COLECCIÓN DE ARTÍCULOS VOLUMINOSOS

Este fin de semana nuestra oficina está patrocinando una colección comunitaria de artículos voluminosos en el área de Harbor City Pines. Por favor, recuerde que no se permiten productos químicos ni materiales de construcción. Coloque los artículos hacia atrás. Los Block Captains serán informados sobre la ubicación de los contenedores.

WINTER WONDERLAND

¡Comenzamos la temporada de invierno el jueves con nuestro primer One-Five Winter Wonderland en Harbor Gateway North en el Boys and Girls Club del Blvd Gardena! Tuvimos una participación especial de Santa y una actuación del Boys & Girls Club. Gracias a todos los que vinieron. ¡Es seguro decir que el trineo fue un éxito! Tenemos 2 eventos más de Winter Wonderland en el Gateway este mes, el 7 de diciembre en el Enclave y en Harbor Gateway South en el Boys & Girls Club de Cheryl Green el 19 de diciembre.

COLECTA DE ALIMENTOS

Esta semana pasada, nuestra oficina participó en la Campaña de Comida Janet Horst que se llevó a cabo por el Harbor Gateway Torrance Outreach. Más de 100 familias asistieron y recibieron comida. ¡Gracias a todos los voluntarios que ayudaron a distribuir comida a los miembros de nuestra comunidad!

EXHIBICIÓN INVERNAL

¡Acompañenos el sábado 15 de diciembre en el Centro Recreativo de Normandale para celebrar las fiestas con Santa, artes y manualidades, una colecta de juguetes y más! ¡Este evento es gratuito y seguro que pasará un buen rato!

ELIMINANDO EL GRAFFITI

El fin de semana pasado, vándalos desfiguraron Concha sonora, baños y dependencias del parque Pt. Fermín  con graffiti. Gracias a los voluntarios de CPR de San Pedro que rápidamente entraron en acción el domingo y a nuestro equipo de pintura de recreación y parques el lunes, pudimos remover el graffiti y embellecer nuestros parques. Gracias a nuestros voluntarios y a nuestros excelentes equipos de la ciudad, que están al máximo, pero ansiosos por hacer que nuestros parques sean hermosos.

CANDY CANE LANE

Durante 37 años, Candy Cane Lane en Weymouth Corners ha sido una parte importante de la tradición de Harbor Holiday. ¡Es un gran evento donde las tiendas permanecen abiertas después del horario de atención, hay entretenimiento musical y una aparición sorpresa de Santa del Polo Norte!

RUTA DE AUTOBÚS A WINTER WONDERLAND

Se brindará un servicio continuo de autobús el domingo 9 de diciembre para nuestro evento Winter Wonderland con transporte hacia y desde Peck Park. El servicio se extenderá de las 3 a 8:15 pm.. Los puntos de recogida y devolución incluyen Rancho San Pedro en 275 W. 1st St. y Toberman Neighborhood Center en 131 N. Grand Ave.

MUJERES EN HIDRÓGENO EN ALTASEA

A principios de este mes asistí al evento Mujeres en la Revolución del Hidrógeno en AltaSea, que destacó el papel fundamental que desempeñan las mujeres en la configuración del futuro de la energía limpia y el cambio positivo en nuestra sociedad. Nos fijamos grandes objetivos para hacer que el Puerto de Los Ángeles sea sostenible y agradezco a todos los oradores del evento, a AltaSea y a muchos otros por ser socios en este heroico esfuerzo.

RALLY DE FÚTBOL EN JORDAN

Felicitaciones a los Jordan High Bulldogs - CIF City Div. III ¡Campeones! ¡El jueves, me emocioné de estar en Jordan High para una reunión de motivación para el juego regional CIF del sábado por la noche!

CPAB SURESTE ESPAÑOL

Gracias a todos los que asistieron a la reunión final de este año. Resultó ser la habitual Junta Asesora Pública de la Comunidad con el LAPD, así como actualizaciones de la Oficina de la Alcaldesa. Alentamos a nuestros residentes bilingües y de habla hispana en Watts a asistir cuando comiencen de nuevo en enero en St. Lawrence of Brandissi.

INSTALACIÓN DE RAMPA DE ACCESO

La Oficina de Servicios Callejeros del Departamento de Obras Públicas ha comenzado la construcción de rampas de acceso en Wilmington Ave. Completaron la primera esquina en 106th y continúan hasta 103rd St. Temporalmente no se pueden colocar señales de estacionamiento y en ocasiones se puede cerrar un carril para ayudar a facilitar la construcción.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Gracias a nuestra comunidad de Wilmington por asistir a nuestra primera ronda de Winter Wonderlands el primer fin de semana, que celebramos en Wilmington Town Square Park. ¡Juntos disfrutamos de la nieve, paseamos en trineo y encendimos el árbol para sentir el espíritu navideño! Asegúrese de reservar la fecha y acompanenos el domingo 10 de diciembre para el 36º Desfile Navideño Anual de Heart of the Harbor en Avalon Blvd. de las calles F a la M.  ¡Ahi nos vemos!

SEGURIDAD PEATONAL

Después de la trágica muerte de Juan Areyan el 3 de julio a causa de un vehículo a alta velocidad, mi oficina trabajó con su familia y el Departamento de Transporte de Los Ángeles para colocar una señal de alto de 4 vías en la G St. y Fries Ave. Hace dos semanas, el Departamento instaló el letrero y el lunes pasado, con la familia Areyan y miembros de la comunidad de Wilmington, caminamos por el cruce peatonal recién pintado en memoria de Juan, padre, esposo y amigo de muchos en nuestra comunidad de Wilmington.

ARBOL CAIDO

Un árbol grande se cayó en Banning Park el lunes y gracias a Urban Forestry pudimos retirarlo el miércoles por la mañana. Desafortunadamente, el árbol arruinó parte de la cancha de basquetbol, por lo que estamos trabajando con el Departamento de Recreación y Parques para arreglarlo lo antes posible.

CAMPEONES DE FÚTBOL EN BANNING

El fin de semana pasado fui a ver a Banning High School sellar una victoria por el título CIF de la ciudad de la División I. Con un largo recorrido tardío y una intercepción dramática cuando se acababa el tiempo, me sentí orgulloso de estar en las gradas con nuestra comunidad de Wilmington para celebrar a los Pilotos en otro Campeonato. Juegan esta noche contra La Jolla Country Day, ¡Vamos Pilotos!
