As I reflect back on my first year in office, I am so proud of how much we accomplished together so quickly. From restoring trust and collaboration with communities to fully funding our police and firefighters and drastically reducing tent encampments across the District, we have been hard at work restoring your safety and quality of life on the Westside.
As we look to 2024, much work remains and huge challenges lie ahead, but I am confident that through our continued grassroots engagement, CD11 will continue to set the bar for what residents should expect of their local elected officials.
Traffic Safety On PCH
Following dozens of speed-related fatalities on PCH over the years, the tragic deaths of four Pepperdine students in October prompted urgent action by government officials. Last week, I met with California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, CalTrans officials, CHP, and leaders from the Cities of Malibu and Santa Monica to discuss traffic safety on PCH.
Anticipated improvements for PCH include pavement markings, speed feedback signage, extra law enforcement patrols, and enhanced fines and penalties for speeding. State and local officials are also fully committed to advancing legislation to deploy speed cameras along the PCH corridor, and I am personally dedicated to doing whatever is necessary to promote safety and protect lives.
I adjourned our meeting with a heavy heart in remembrance of Pepperdine students Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams.

County Delays New "Gravely Disabled" Criteria
Earlier this year, I was proud to lead a City resolution in support of Senate Bill 43, which expanded our State conservatorship laws to address the epidemic of mental illness and the proliferation of highly addictive and deadly drugs like meth and fentanyl, which both cause and exacerbate psychotic disorders. This legislation is essential for providing mental health and addiction treatment for those with the highest need.
Although SB 43 was signed into law in October and could have launched concurrent with LA County’s CARE Court, the County Board of Supervisors voted to delay implementation of the new “gravely disabled” criteria until 2026. Unfortunately, this will adversely impact our ability to promptly deal with some of the most challenging addiction and mental health cases.
We have been hard at work all year maintaining safety and accessibility of our sidewalks, repairing our roads, and improving accessibility. We hope you feel the difference your CD11 team is making across the District!
Looking Back At Park's Pick
We started Park's Pick one year ago to highlight the vibrant businesses and organizations on the Westside. This journey has been a remarkable opportunity to explore CD11, and I can't wait to visit more of our local gems and share their stories in the new year!
