One year ago this past week, we started a journey together towards a new commitment - that we were no longer the 15th District, but instead - One District made up of Five beautiful, deserving communities. “The One-Five.”

Each of these beloved communities - Watts, Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, Wilmington, and San Pedro - has its unique qualities, challenges, and potential. It’s more than a slogan. It is a way of responding to both needs and opportunities. And, spending quality time with each of our communities over the last 12 months has been the greatest part of this job, hands down. It lifts me up, inspires me, and fills me with pride being allowed to represent you all.

Just as we did last year on my first day in office, on Tuesday morning Connie and I attended Las Mañanitas and Mass on this Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wilmington. It is incredibly special to start off the new term with a beautiful mariachi performance, a powerful service, and I feel so grateful to have been called up for a blessing by Pastor Ruben Rocha.

I am honored every day to have the opportunity to represent each and every one of you in the One-Five. This year has been deeply rewarding and has gone by fast. We have already done so much and we’re just getting started!

We’re heading into Council Recess for a few weeks and will return to the Council Chambers in the new year. This is my favorite time where I am able to spend even more time in the One-Five with all of you. See you out in our communities!

In 1989, the City created union hiring halls for the temporary use of craft workers. These workers are used to supplement the existing workforce in order to complete vital construction projects in a timely manner. Yesterday I introduced a motion to look further at the city’s hiring halls to see how frequently these hiring halls are being used for construction projects, as well as the possibility of establishing arrangements with hiring halls for key skilled craft apprenticeship programs through the Targeted Local Hiring Program. We have a lot of projects coming up throughout the city and with vacancies throughout our departments we need to be creative and strategic in order to get all of this important work done!

HAPPY HANUKKAH

On Monday we gathered on the Waterfront to light the menorah to celebrate the 5th night of Hanukkah. As we spend this time reflecting on the miracle of light over 2,000 years ago, it’s important to remember today to be that light for each other - to spread hope, faith and goodness. Thank you Rabbi Yisroel Shuchat for having me on this holy day.

WINTER WONDERLANDS

We have 2 more Winter Wonderlands on the calendar for this holiday season! Join us this afternoon at the Harbor City Rec Center and on Tuesday at the Cheryl Green Boys & Girls Club for a tree lighting, snow, and holiday entertainment for the whole family. See you there!

CHRISTMAS TREE GIVEAWAY

Congratulations to the Harbor City Food Pantry for a successful Holiday Tree giveaway! 200 families were given a holiday tree to add a little more cheer to this holiday season.

SANTA IN GREEN MEADOWS

The team joined the Harbor City community of Green Meadows for their 20th annual holiday celebration with Santa. It was great to see the children enjoying the holiday spirit, decorating ornaments and drinking hot cocoa by the fire.

FAREWELL CESAR

Our office along with community members recognized Cesar who has been the Harbor Pines mail carrier for over a decade! He not only safely delivered our mail and packages, but he also looked out for the neighbors. We wish Cesar well on his new assignment and will miss him!

NORMANDALE WINTER EVENT

We had a wonderful winter time at Normandale Recreation Center yesterday! Thank you to Rec and Parks for putting on such an amazing event, Santa Claus for stopping by, and to everyone who attended!

ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEANUP

This week, the Department of Sanitation helped clean up an illegal dump on 120th St. in the Harbor Gateway. Please report illegal dumping on 311 and it will be addressed as soon as possible!

PEDESTRIAN SIGN CROSSING REPLACEMENT

Recently, a pedestrian crossing sign on Central Ave. was damaged and fell over. Our office reported it to the Department of Transportation and it was replaced promptly.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Thank you to everyone who came out last Saturday to Winter Wonderland at Peck Park - our 6th Winter Wonderland event of the season! We kicked it off with a very special holiday performance by the Peck Park Cheer Squad and then lit one of the most beautiful trees in the park! Thanks to all the local community members who brought such fun activities including cookie decorating, ornament making, and free books!

SKATEBOARD GIVEAWAY

After reopening the Channel St. Skate Park, the San Pedro Skate Association launched an initiative to provide skateboards and helmets to the next generation and on Saturday partnered with the Toberman Center. It was great to be with our young skaters to hand out new skateboards and see them take ‘em for a spin around the skate park course!

NUTCRACKER 30TH ANNIVERSARY

I was with One-Five Royalty this past weekend…Misty Copeland! San Pedro raised an American Ballet Theater star! We honored Cindy and Patrick Bradley, founders of the San Pedro City Ballet, at the 30th anniversary of their beautiful production of the Nutcracker. This annual show at the Warner Grand Theatre is a treasured Harbor tradition!

LEGENDS CAR CLUB TOY DRIVE

I stopped by the Legends Car Club get together, where they were hosting a toy drive. The weather was great, the gifts were plentiful, and the cars were beautiful. Thank you to the Legends Car Club for joining the ranks of our many community organizations collecting toys for kids this holiday season.

BICYCLE GIVEAWAY

For 35 years, the Parents of Watts has been holding a Bike Giveaway for the students in Watts. This year they gave bikes to the students from 10 local Watts elementary schools!

MUDTOWN FARMS

The tomatoes were plentiful at the Mudtown Farms Community Harvest! WLCAC’s MudTown Farms is dedicated to restorative urban farming in our Watts community. On Wednesday morning we were out in the garden picking in-season vegetables to be distributed at their 11 AM food giveaway. MudTown farms is a gem in the One-Five, check it out at E. 103rd and Grape St.!

COMMUNITY INTERVENTION GRADUATION

On Thursday we gathered at the Phoenix Hall at WLCAC to celebrate the graduation of the Urban Peace Institute Community Violence Intervention Training Academy! These graduates chose a path of peacemaking and dedicated 100 hours of training on a variety of subjects including personal history and trauma, mediation/conflict resolution, the public health approach to violence reduction, building a peace infrastructure and more. This act of public service is so important to me and to the One-Five and I am looking forward to seeing all the good work they will be doing in our community.

HOLIDAYS IN THE HARBOR

It was a full and fun day in Wilmington on Sunday! Connie and I started off the day at the 36th Annual Heart of the Harbor Holiday Parade traveling up Avalon Blvd. and ending at Banning Park. It was so great to see all of you and celebrate the holiday season together in our community. From there we went to the Sincere Seniors Club for lunch and a bit of dancing! The holiday events are in full swing in the Harbor and we have been delighted to be with you all to celebrate.

CONGRATULATIONS PILOTS

I am so proud of our Banning High School football team for making it to the State Championships this year! Throughout the way these young men showed heart, dedication, and tenacity and it was a joy to watch our Pilots, the 2023 CIF SoCal Regional Champions! I can't wait to welcome these champions to City Hall early next year!

YMCA 25TH ANNIVERSARY

The YMCA is much more than a gym, it’s a place for kids to play, learn, for everyone to be healthy. They allow parents the freedom with child care, young adults job training, seniors a way to connect, and children a place to develop, grow, and prosper. On Thursday evening we celebrated 25 years of the Wilmington YMCA. Special thanks go out to Yolanda De La Torre, the Board, and the staff of the Y for everything they do for our community of Wilmington!

La semana pasada hace un año, comenzamos un viaje juntos hacia un nuevo compromiso: que ya no éramos el Distrito 15, sino un Distrito compuesto por cinco comunidades hermosas y merecedoras. "El Uno-Cinco".

Cada una de estas queridas comunidades (Watts, Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, Wilmington y San Pedro) tiene sus cualidades, desafíos y potencial únicos. Es más que un eslogan. Es una forma de responder tanto a las necesidades como a las oportunidades. Y pasar tiempo de calidad con cada una de nuestras comunidades durante los últimos 12 meses ha sido la mayor parte de este trabajo, sin lugar a dudas. Me eleva, me inspira y me llena de orgullo poder representarlos a todos.

Tal como lo hicimos el año pasado en mi primer día en el cargo, el martes por la mañana Connie y yo asistimos a Las Mañanitas y a Misa en esta Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en la Iglesia Católica Holy Family en Wilmington.

Es increíblemente especial comenzar el nuevo período con una hermosa presentación de mariachi, un servicio poderoso y me siento muy agradecido de haber sido llamado para recibir la bendición del pastor Rubén Rocha.

Es un honor para mí todos los días tener la oportunidad de representar a todos y cada uno de ustedes en el One-Five. Este año ha sido profundamente gratificante y ha pasado rápido. ¡Ya hemos hecho mucho y apenas estamos comenzando!

Nos adentramos en un receso del Consejo durante algunas semanas y regresaremos a las Cámaras del Consejo en el nuevo año. Este es mi momento favorito, en el que puedo pasar aún más tiempo en el One-Five con todos ustedes. ¡Nos vemos en nuestras comunidades!

En 1989, la Ciudad creó salas de contratación sindical para el uso temporal de trabajadores artesanales. Estos trabajadores se utilizan para complementar la fuerza laboral existente con el fin de completar proyectos de construcción vitales de manera oportuna. Ayer presenté una moción para examinar más a fondo las salas de contratación de la ciudad y ver con qué frecuencia se utilizan para proyectos de construcción, así como la posibilidad de establecer acuerdos con las salas de contratación para programas clave de aprendizaje de artesanías especializadas a través del Programa de Contratación Local Dirigida. ¡Tenemos muchos proyectos en camino en toda la ciudad y con vacantes en todos nuestros departamentos, debemos ser creativos y estratégicos para poder realizar todo este importante trabajo!

FELIZ HANUKKAH

El lunes nos reunimos en el Waterfront para encender la menorá para celebrar la quinta noche de Hanukkah. El equipo se unió a la comunidad de Green Meadows de Harbor City para su vigésima celebración navideña anual con Santa. Fue fantástico ver a los niños disfrutando del espíritu navideño, decorando adornos y bebiendo chocolate caliente junto al fuego.

DESPEDIDA A CESAR

¡Nuestra oficina junto con miembros de la comunidad reconocieron a César, quien ha sido el cartero de Harbor City durante más de una década! No solo entregó nuestro correo y paquetes de manera segura, sino que también cuidó de los vecinos. ¡Le deseamos lo mejor a César en su nueva asignación y lo extrañaremos!

EVENTO DE INVIERNO DE NORMANDALE

¡Ayer pasamos un invierno maravilloso en el Centro Recreativo Normandale! ¡Gracias a Rec and Parks por organizar un evento tan increíble y a todos los que asistieron!

LIMPIEZA DE VERTIDOS ILEGALES

Esta semana, el Departamento de Sanidad ayudó a limpiar un vertedero ilegal en 120th St. en Harbor Gateway. ¡Por favor informe el vertido ilegal al 311 y se abordará lo antes posible!

REEMPLAZO DE SEÑALES DE CRUCES PEATONALES

Recientemente, una señal de cruce de peatones en Central Ave. resultó dañada y se cayó. Nuestra oficina lo informó al Departamento de Transporte y fue reemplazada de inmediato.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Gracias a todos los que vinieron el sábado pasado a Winter Wonderland en Peck Park, ¡Nuestro sexto evento de la temporada en Winter Wonderland! ¡Comenzamos con una actuación navideña muy especial del equipo de porristas de Peck Park y luego encendimos uno de los árboles más hermosos del parque! ¡Gracias a todos los miembros de la comunidad local que trajeron actividades tan divertidas como decoración de galletas, elaboración de adornos y libros gratis!

SORTEO DEL CANAL SKATE PARK

Después de reabrir el Channel St. Skate Park, la Asociación de Patinaje de San Pedro lanzó una iniciativa para proporcionar patinetas y cascos a la próxima generación y el sábado se asoció con el Centro Toberman. ¡Fue fantástico estar con nuestros jóvenes patinadores para repartir patinetas nuevas y verlos dar una vuelta por la pista del parque de patinaje!

30 ANIVERSARIO DEL CASCANUECES

El fin de semana junto al One-Five Royalty… ¡Misty Copeland, criada en San Pedro y estrella del American Ballet Theatre! Honramos a Cindy y Patrick Bradley, fundadores del Ballet de la ciudad de San Pedro, en el 30 aniversario de su hermosa producción del Cascanueces. ¡Este espectáculo anual es una preciada tradición portuaria!

COLECTA DE JUGUETES DEL CLUB DE AUTOS LEYENDAS

Pasé por la reunión del Legends Car Club, donde estaban organizando una colecta de juguetes. El clima estuvo fantástico, los regalos abundantes y los autos hermosos. Gracias al Legends Car Club por unirse a las filas de nuestras numerosas organizaciones comunitarias que recolectan juguetes para niños en esta temporada navideña.

SORTEO DE BICICLETAS

Desde hace 35 años, los padres de Watts organizan un sorteo de bicicletas para los estudiantes de Watts. ¡Este año regalaron bicicletas a los estudiantes de 10 escuelas primarias locales de Watts!

GRANJAS DE MUDTOWN

¡Los tomates abundaron en la cosecha comunitaria de Mudtown Farms! Dado que la comunidad de Watts es un desierto alimentario, MudTown Farms de WLCAC se dedica a la agricultura urbana restaurativa en nuestra comunidad. El miércoles por la mañana estábamos en el jardín recogiendo verduras de temporada para distribuirlas en su sorteo de alimentos a las 11 a.m. MudTown Farms es una joya en One-Five, ¡compruébalo en E. 103rd y Grape St.!

GRADUACIÓN DE INTERVENCIÓN COMUNITARIA

¡El jueves nos reunimos en el Phoenix Hall de WLCAC para celebrar la graduación de la Academia de Capacitación en Intervención contra la Violencia Comunitaria del Urban Peace Institute! Estos graduados eligieron un camino de establecimiento de la paz y dedicaron 100 horas de capacitación en una variedad de temas que incluyen historia personal y trauma, mediación/resolución de conflictos, el enfoque de salud pública para la reducción de la violencia, construcción de una infraestructura de paz y más. Este acto de servicio público es muy importante para mí y para el One-Five y espero ver todo el buen trabajo que harán en nuestra comunidad.

DÍA FESTIVO EN EL PUERTO

¡Fue un día completo y divertido en Wilmington el domingo! Connie y yo comenzamos el día en el 36º Desfile Navideño Anual de Heart of the Harbor viajando por la Avalon Blvd. y terminando en Banning Park. Fue genial verlos a todos y celebrar juntos la temporada navideña en nuestra comunidad. ¡De ahí fuimos al Sincere Seniors Club para almorzar y bailar un poco! Los eventos navideños están en pleno apogeo en el puerto y estamos encantados de estar con todos ustedes para celebrarlo.

FELICIDADES PILOTOS

¡Estoy muy orgulloso de nuestro equipo de fútbol americano de Banning High School por haber llegado al campeonato estatal este año! A lo largo del camino, estos jóvenes mostraron corazón, dedicación y tenacidad, y fue un placer ver a nuestros Pilotos, ¡los Campeones Regionales CIF SoCal 2023! ¡No puedo esperar para darles la bienvenida a estos campeones en el Ayuntamiento a principios del próximo año!

25 ANIVERSARIO DE LA YMCA

El YMCA es mucho más que un gimnasio, es un lugar para que los niños jueguen, aprendan y para que todos estén sanos. Les permiten a los padres la libertad con el cuidado de los niños, a los adultos jóvenes capacitación laboral, a las personas mayores una forma de conectarse y a los niños un lugar para desarrollarse, crecer y prosperar. El jueves por la noche celebramos los 25 años del Wilmington YMCA. ¡Un agradecimiento especial a Yolanda De La Torre, la Junta Directiva y el personal de la Y por todo lo que hacen por nuestra comunidad de Wilmington!
