Dear friends, fam, and allies,

We hope your holidays were amazing and filled with joy! We also hope you took the time to remember to put all your food scraps in your green bin, and continue to do so. :)

Please continue to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, loved ones, and family that food scraps are required to go in the green bins. And if they still haven’t received a free kitchen pail, they can request one from the CCAC Fellows through this link.

12,000 tons of waste goes to landfills every day, just in the state of California. That’s the equivalent weight of about 6,000 cars!

This graph from LA Sanitation depicts the quantity of materials that make up the landfills:
You see that 28.9% of the landfill is organics, also known as food scraps! Organics waste can be broken down into nutrients to go back into the soil and to help the earth sequester carbon back into the ground. Paper (21.7% of the landfill) can also be broken down and put back into the earth.

Plastic, which comprises 15.5% of the landfill, is more difficult to process. In Los Angeles, plastics with a 1, 2 , or 5 label on the bottom are recycled. Any other plastics are typically taken to the landfill.

A company called Ridwell has tried to alleviate this issue. (Note: this article is not sponsored in any way)

Ridwell is a service that can arrive at your door every other week to collect plastic bags, plastic film, Styrofoam, clothes, shoes, textiles, household batteries, and lightbulbs. They transport these items to facilities that can process them into other materials.

For example in Los Angeles, plastic bags (which cannot otherwise be recycled) collected by Ridwell are taken to a company called Trex and turned into decking. Ridwell also partners with Blankets of Love to collect, transport and distribute pet food and pet supplies to animal shelters, pets of unhoused neighbors, pets in foster care, wildlife/farm and sanctuaries.
