This week we returned to the John Ferraro Council Chamber for the first three meetings of 2024. It was great to see everyone and I am ready to get to work with big goals and initiatives in mind in the new year for the One-Five.

This upcoming year we will also see the hard work we put into last year come into fruition. From launching the CIRCLE program in the One-Five to the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade, motions we introduced in Council will become programs, projects we started will become tangible, and you will begin to see directly in our district.

The principles of the One-Five have been seared into my entire being. And I’m most aware of this when I’m advocating for the district up in City Hall. From my role on the Council and in committees as chair of the Personnel, vice chair of Energy and Environment, or a member of the Budget and Public Safety committees - every motion I introduce, report heard, and vote cast is acted upon with the One-Five in mind.

I’m looking forward to doing big things in 2024!

I also want to wish you all a happy Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend and I hope you take some time to reflect on the importance of unity towards our common goals. Together, we can build equitable pathways for people to have the opportunities promised to all. This happens when we uplift each other, put the needs of one another first, and lead with love.

I was honored to moderate a panel during LA Sanitation’s symposium on plastic reduction this week. From initiatives like Zero Waste at city-events which I introduced last year, to OrganicsLA, a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions - we need to continue to be at the forefront of climate change policy. We need to use all the tools in the toolbox if we are to achieve our climate change goals. I was especially thrilled to have my recycling advisor and guru - my wife Connie - in the audience!

THE HARBOR IN CROATIA

When our friend, Nathalie Rayes, the US Ambassador-elect to Croatia calls to request art to present to the President and Prime Minister of Croatia, you make sure to deliver the best!

Supervisor Janice Hahn and I have known Nathalie Rayes for over 20 years and were overjoyed to help her by handpicking works from San Pedro Croatian artists Eve Pericich and Stephen Mirich who delivered incredible artwork of the San Pedro coastline and port. I’m thrilled that 6,000 miles away, the One-Five will be well represented in Croatia when Ambassador Rayes presents her credentials to the President and Prime Minister!

STATE OF THE PORT

Thank you to the Port of Los Angeles for having me at your State of POLA Luncheon on Wednesday. It was great to be with Port staff, Harbor Commissioners, and community leaders as we heard an update on the past year’s Port activities and a look into the future. I look forward to continuing our work in making sure we retain our place as the best Port in the Western Hemisphere by moving these goods, but especially so that we can retain and grow our workforce. And, by doing this we can invest in our communities to take care of our neighbors and improve our environment.

ONE-FIVE DAY RECAP

POINT-IN-TIME COUNT

The annual Point-in-Time Count is coming up and we are in need of volunteers throughout the One-Five! With your help, we can ensure every unhoused person is counted, which is needed to secure services and housing for them. Wednesday, January 24th will be the count for Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, San Pedro, and Wilmington and Thursday, January 25th will be the Watts count. Please register to volunteer at this link.

The ONE•FIVE is made up of 5 distinct communities that add so much to our district. See below for specific updates for each of the neighborhoods.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

Our office worked with the LA Department of Transportation to install additional bollards to prevent motorists making last-minute, unsafe, sudden lane changes on Vermont at Normandie Ave.

TIRE DROP OFF

Residents that are serviced by the Bureau of Sanitation may drop off up to four automobile tires per calendar year at their local district yards. District yards accept tires from Monday through Friday, between 8 AM and 2 PM. District yards do not accept rims and should be removed prior to your visit.

PUPUSERIA LA QUEBRADA

Our office recognized Pupuseria La Quebrada, a new neighborhood restaurant in Harbor City for their contribution to our City Employee Appreciation Luncheon in November! They’re open every day but Tuesday so go visit them and try their delicious pupusas at 1111 W Pacific Coast Hwy.

METROPOLITAN WATER PIPELINE UPDATES

This week at the Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood Council Meeting, Metropolitan Water District presented their latest water pipeline project that is currently underway on Western Avenue in our district. If you would like to learn more about the project, please visit the website here.

SKIRBALL MIDDLE SCHOOL TOY AND HAIRCUT EVENT

Our office was delighted to attend the Jack H. Skirball toy giveaway and free haircut event. The school provided food, toys and haircuts for its students and it was a pleasure to meet everyone there!

LIGHT REPAIR ON 182nd AND NORMANDIE 

Thank you to LADOT for helping repair a green light on the traffic signal on 182nd St. and Normandie Ave. Please report any traffic signals and other issues on MYLA311!

HARBOR TRAFFIC ALERT

Please be advised that traffic will be controlled at the corner of 5th St. and Harbor Blvd. on Tuesday, January 16 from 7 AM - 5 PM. The closure is needed for a crane dismantle and will only affect 5th St.

MEL BOBICH GYM

Last week the Recreation and Parks Commission approved the renaming of the gymnasium building at Peck Park as “Mel Bobich Gymnasium” in honor of an extraordinary leader in San Pedro and Harbor history. Mel Bobich cared so deeply about the children of his community that, in the hours beyond his day job, he coached and volunteered at Rec and Park facilities and, in his retirement, founded the San Pedro Youth Coalition, which advocated for kids, recognized future leaders, and promoted spaces for sports and healthy activities. Thank you to John and Robert Bobich, two of Mel and Katie’s 7 children, for joining me for this important commission vote.

STREET LAMP INSTALLATION

Our office, in partnership with Caltrans, worked to restore a missing streetlight at the SW corner of Summerland and Western this week. Thank you to Caltrans for moving quickly to address this safety issue.

SAN PEDRO NW NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

On Monday, I attended the neighborhood council meeting to discuss the recent hate crime that occurred to Reginald Scott and his family in San Pedro. I have spoken to LAPD’s Harbor Division leadership and we are very clear that whoever defaced Reginald's car is to be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, specifically as a hate crime. The words and symbols spray-painted on the car are vile and disgusting and cause real, tangible terror and harm to our neighbors and our community. This crime is hateful, deplorable and has no place here in the 15th Council District or anywhere.

WATTS AREA MINISTERS KING DAY

It was an honor to be in the community on Saturday for the annual Watts Area Ministers’ Dr. King Day Celebration. Held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Shopping Center in Watts on Compton Ave/103rd Street, this year’s theme of the celebration, "Insisting on the Integrity of the Dream", brought together civic and community leaders to uplift the spirit and messages of Dr. King. We also took the opportunity to honor “Sweet Alice” Harris for her long history and life of community activism mentoring our youth and providing assistance to disadvantaged people. I was grateful to be there in the beloved community of Watts to celebrate.

HEALTHY GROCERY MARKETS

Last weekend I stopped by the Food 4 Less to visit the business and see all the updates that have been made to the store. Watts is considered a food desert, with a high concentration of corner markets, liquor stores, and fast-food restaurants and a lack of supermarkets. Supporting grocery stores allows us to bring healthy food into our communities.

ACCESS RAMPS

The access ramp installation work on Wilmington Ave from E. 103rd to E. 106th St is almost finished! Thank you to the Department of Public Works Bureau of Street Services for addressing these ramps which many students and parents use daily on their walk to school or work.

¡FELIZ DIA DE REYES! 

Saturday morning, with Wilmington Sin Fronteras, we celebrated Three Kings Day - the journey of the wise men who traveled to pay respect and give gifts to baby Jesus. We came together to share delicious Rosca, hot chocolate, and watch a procession of the 3 wise men (complete with camels!) who welcomed the kids and passed out toys and treats. Thank you to our supporters and sponsors, SBCC, Wilmington YMCA, Black Knight Patrol, and so many others.

TREE TRIMMING

Thank you Urban Forestry for the ongoing process of trimming trees in Wilmington. Check out their work on Anaheim Blvd! They will continue trimming more trees over the next few days.

HEALTHCARE NAVIGATION

Every 2nd and 3rd Tuesday at the Community Resource Center in Wilmington they will be holding Healthcare Navigation Classes. This class will help you learn how to choose the right doctor, when to go to the doctor or urgent care, and more. See flyer above for more information.

Esta semana regresamos a la Cámara del Consejo John Ferraro para las primeras tres reuniones de 2024. Fue genial ver a todos y estoy listo para comenzar a trabajar con grandes objetivos e iniciativas en mente en el nuevo año para el One-Five.

El año que viene también veremos cómo se materializa el arduo trabajo que realizamos el año pasado. Desde el lanzamiento del programa CIRCLE en el One-Five hasta Wilmington Waterfront Promenade, las mociones que presentamos en el Consejo se convertirán en programas, los proyectos que iniciamos se volverán tangibles y comenzarán a verse directamente en nuestro distrito.

Los principios del One-Five han quedado grabados en todo mi ser. Y soy más consciente con esto cuando defiendo el distrito en el Ayuntamiento. Tuve el honor de moderar un panel durante el simposio de LA Sanitation sobre reducción de plástico. Cuando nuestra amiga, Nathalie Rayes, la embajadora electa de Estados Unidos en Croacia, llamó para solicitar arte para presentarlo al presidente y al primer ministro de Croacia, ¡nos aseguramos de entregar lo mejor!

La supervisora Janice Hahn y yo conocemos a Nathalie Rayes desde hace más de 20 años y estuvimos encantados de poder ayudarla seleccionando obras de los artistas croatas de San Pedro Eve Pericich y Stephen Mirich, quienes entregaron increíbles obras de arte de la costa y el puerto de San Pedro. ¡Estoy encantado de que a 6.000 millas de distancia, el One-Five esté bien representado en Croacia cuando la Embajadora Rayes presente sus cartas credenciales al Presidente y al Primer Ministro!

ESTADO DEL PUERTO

Gracias al Puerto de Los Ángeles por invitarme a su almuerzo estatal de POLA el miércoles. Fue fantástico estar con el personal y comisionados del puerto así como con los líderes comunitarios mientras escuchamos una actualización sobre las actividades del puerto del año pasado y una mirada hacia el futuro. Espero continuar nuestro trabajo para asegurarnos de conservar nuestro lugar como el mejor puerto del hemisferio occidental al mover estos bienes, pero especialmente para que podamos retener y hacer crecer nuestra fuerza laboral. Y, al hacer esto, podemos invertir en nuestras comunidades para cuidar de nuestros vecinos y mejorar nuestro ambiente.

DIA DEL ONE-FIVE

SEGURIDAD DE TRÁFICO

DEVOLUCIÓN DE NEUMÁTICOS

Los residentes que reciben servicios de la Oficina de Saneamiento pueden dejar hasta cuatro llantas de automóvil por año fiscal en los patios de su distrito local. Los patios del distrito aceptan llantas de lunes a viernes, entre las 8 AM y las 2 PM. Los patios del distrito no aceptan rines de las llantas y deben retirarse antes de su visita.

GIMNASIO MEL BOBICH

Mel Bobich se preocupaba tanto por los niños de su comunidad que, en las horas posteriores a su trabajo diario, entrenaba y trabajaba como voluntario en las instalaciones de Rec and Park y, cuando se jubiló, fundó la Coalición Juvenil de San Pedro, que defendía a los niños con un futuro reconocido. líderes, y promovió espacios para el deporte y actividades saludables.

CONSEJO VECINAL DEL NOROESTE DE SAN PEDRO

El lunes asistí a la reunión del consejo vecinal para discutir el reciente crimen de odio que les ocurrió a Reginald Scott y su familia en San Pedro. He hablado con el liderazgo de la División Portuaria de LAPD y tenemos muy claro que quienquiera que haya desfigurado el auto de Reginald debe ser encontrado y procesado con todo el peso de la ley, específicamente como un crimen de odio. Las palabras y símbolos pintados con aerosol en el automóvil son viles y repugnantes y causan terror y daño real y tangible a nuestros vecinos y nuestra comunidad. DÍA DEL REVERENDO KING EN EL ÁREA DE WATTS

Fue un honor estar en la comunidad el sábado para la celebración anual del Día del Dr. King de los Ministros del Área de Watts. Celebrada en el centro comercial Martin Luther King Jr. en Watts en Compton Ave/103rd Street, el tema de la celebración de este año, "Insistir en la integridad del sueño", reunió a líderes cívicos y comunitarios para elevar el espíritu y los mensajes del Dr. . Rey. También aprovechamos la oportunidad para honrar a “Sweet Alice” Harris por su larga historia y vida de activismo comunitario, asesorando a nuestros jóvenes y brindando asistencia a personas desfavorecidas. MERCADOS DE COMESTIBLES SALUDABLES

El fin de semana pasado pasé por Food 4 Less para visitar el negocio y ver todas las actualizaciones que se han realizado en la tienda. Watts se considera un desierto alimentario, con una alta concentración de mercados de esquina, licorerías y restaurantes de comida rápida y una falta de supermercados. RAMPAS DE ACCESO

La Oficina de Servicios de Calle del Departamento de Obras Públicas está terminando de implementar rampas de acceso en Wilmington Ave. Completaron la primera esquina en 106th y continuará hasta 103rd St. Temporalmente no se pueden colocar señales de estacionamiento y en ocasiones se puede cerrar un carril para ayudar a facilitar la construcción.

¡FELIZ DÍA DE REYES!

El sábado por la mañana celebramos el Día de los Reyes Magos con Wilmington Sin Fronteras. Esta tradición recalca el viaje de los reyes magos para rendir homenaje y darle regalos al niño Jesús. Nos reunimos para compartir una deliciosa Rosca, chocolate caliente y ver una procesión de los Reyes Magos (¡completa con camellos!) que dieron la bienvenida a los niños y repartieron juguetes y golosinas. Gracias a nuestros seguidores y patrocinadores, SBCC, Wilmington YMCA, Black Knight Patrol y muchos otros.

PODADO DE ARBOLES

Gracias Urban Forestry por el proceso continuo de poda de árboles en Wilmington. Seguirán podando más árboles en los próximos días.

NAVEGANDO EL TEMA DE SALUD

Cada segundo y tercer martes en el Centro de recursos comunitarios en Wilmington se llevarán a cabo clases de navegación en atención médica.
