Special thanks to Jimena for coming out to volunteer with the CD1 Fellows at the “MLK Beloved Community Walk” hosted by Pico-Union Neighborhood Council and Loyola High School! CD1 Fellows joined this event to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and participate in this national day of service. We distributed 75 OrganicsLA kitchen pails and signed up several new volunteers to help us reach our goal!
Dear friends, fam, and allies,

CD1 Fellows had the pleasure of partnering with Athens Services to distribute pails to multi-family properties in Pico-Union & Westlake! Residents received a free Athens Organics pail to start putting their food waste into the green bin.

They also received educational materials about how to properly sort waste into the appropriate blue and green recycle bins. It’s so important to sort properly to maximize our recycling and reduce our waste. If the wrong things are found in the blue and green bins, then all the recyclables in those bins are considered “contaminated” and taken to the landfill. Check out these helpful “cheat sheets” from Athens to learn more about what goes in each bin.

CD1 Fellows will continue to do pail outreach in collaboration with Athens throughout our term. Interested in joining us? Click below!
Volunteer with us!

Want to participate in OrganicsLA but don’t have a green bin for your building? CD1 is currently serviced by three waste service companies: Athens Services, United Waste Systems, and Republic Services. If you live in an apartment building and do not have a green bin, please use this helpful toolkit to reach out to your landlord or property manager to ask for a green bin!

Let's get it fam!

  • Food Waste In the News
Municipalities take the lead in enforcing the City’s compliance with SB1383, so we have OrganicsLA in Los Angeles. Effective this month, fines will be imposed on customers that are not diverting organic waste from the landfill/black bin. Sacramento decided not to implement fines this year, and instead shifted their focus onto education to give constituents more time to transition into the new recycling protocol. Here is the article with more details. What do you think of Sacramento’s decision to delay the fines? Do you think the education efforts will be more effective for recycling efforts and reaching the state’s carbon emission goals?
  • Schools and Community Organization Outreach

The Fellows are excited about CalCreative Learning Academy’s invitation to present the City’s OrganicsLA program in compliance with SB 1383 in a webinar next month.  We will be providing CalCreative parents, teachers and stakeholders an opportunity to participate in the program by pre-registering for their kitchen compost pails. Then, the Fellows will deliver the compost pails to the school for students to take home the following week. How easy is that!?

If you would like to have the Fellows participate in your community event or present the OrganicsLA program and SB1383 to your school, community organization or business in CD1, fill out this form, indicate your school or organization in the “Anything else?” box and we’ll connect with you to set it up!
